I spent 3 of the best years of my life in Darmstadt in the early 60's. I began my study of German and met my German wife of 50 years. I went on to get my degree in German. We have been back many times over the last 6o years and have witnessed how the town has changed. My kids rew up thinking it was normal to geo spend the summers with Oma und Opa in Darmstadt with their mother. I would join them for the last couple weeks and we would use Darmstadt as our base to travel around Central Europe.

We were in Germany two months ago. Stayed in Darmstadt for about 10 days. So quiet and orderly township. Close to Frankfurt but no fast paced tempo. Out of the 11 towns we stayed liked this most. Follwed by Leipzig, Dresden and Heidelberg.

I had a German pen friend when I was 14 and his family took me to Darnstadt and I loved it. As an English teenager who had never yet been abroad I thought it was the best place in the world.
As a born there local, a so called Heiner, I‘d like to answer your question. If you search for an exiting place to be in Germany I would recommend Berlin, Leipzig, Hamburg or Frankfurt. If you want a calm but not a stay behind city, Darmstadt is a place to be. Also it’s excellent for studying because of the Technical university and college, also there are many scientific dependencies here like Fraunhofer Institutes and the society for heavy ion research, the control Center for ESA and so much more. Next is that you’re located in the Rhine Main Area with several prospering cities in on of Germanys economic powerhouses. Darmstadt is also nice to live because you are very quick in the nature. Due its shape and position you are with a bicycle in the woods within 20 Minutes from every point in the city. Darmstadt is also very Open minded and was mostly governed by social liberal or the Green Party. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
