2. instead of hand sewing the thread-end, could we just backstitch it?

If your machine has that option yes you want to go low, on my 1409 it says go between 1 and 0

As much as I love 1 step button hole, 4 step is actually more likeable because if you snap your thread with 1 step button hole or ran out of the thread and just realized it at the end, you need to repeat again

So for some reason when I’m pressing my foot down on the second and fourth steps, my machine isn’t moving the fabric on its own like it is in the video. Anybody got ideas as to why? It’s made it really difficult to use this setting on my machine

Hello Mia! When making a buttonhole on this machine no other setting are needed. When turning the dial to step 1 thru 4 your machine knows what steps to create each time to give you correct size button hole. Thank you! -MM
