- This is a basic description of a Beseler 23 C ll enlarger showing all the different things about it. It enlarges 8mm to 6x9 format on 120 film. I have equipment to enlarge onto 16x20 paper but man, that's a drag. Now I use a big tube on a motorized mount to process paper that big.
Thank you for the walk through of this enlarger I will be printing soon for the first time.
In the movie Funny Girl, or Funny Face, Fred Astaire and Audry Hepburn, in the darkroom the enlarger is used horizontally to project images across the room to create greatly enlarged sections. This enlarger can do that.
Nice Enlarger and good to know that it's affordable.
Thank you, very good review.
Thanks for that. Very helpful

That filter tray may be upside down. Since filters go into it, the greater surface area of the top, as shown, may hold filters more securely.
Fantastic video on the Beseler 23 C II. Thanks for posting this! I found someone selling this for what seems like a reasonable price and I was wondering if it would work for my Pentax 6x7 negatives.
Thanks again!
6x7 is not as big as it goes. I use mine to enlarge 6x9 negatives.
you can replace that missing knob with one of the focus knobs.
I just bought a Beseler 23c at a flea market for $30. It doesn't have the lamp and only has a red filter. I'm going to make the lamp component from a light fixture with a switched cable, using a 75w enlarger bulb. The gearrs all work if a little stiff so I will need to give it a good cleaning with a can of air. The class and lenses are svratch free with just a littke dust to clean. The concertina focus part is not dry or cracked but how should I care for it? What would you recommend to use to grease the gears? Also where would you recommend to buy a negative tray and filters? I'm happy with my purchase, my budget isn't very big and I'm just getting back into film photography after about 10 years. I want to do black and white prints for now but would like to find filters for future use. Thanks for an informative video.
P.s I think it is a first model, it has no numeric after the 23c. It is silver and not painted black.
Hi, that is a great find. No shipping! eBay for trays and lenses. I bought bulbs made for it from a bulb place after a google on the bulb number PH/111A by EiKO 125 V 75 W. I never greased mine. But malibdamon? Ask at a real hardware store.
Great, thanks for the advice!
Around the 5:09-10 mark you had the enlarger tilted how do you pull it back down. I just got one today and when I was loading it up it got tilted in a 90° angle and I don’t know how to pull it down.
Keshia,
It goes back all by itself, there is a big hook that holds it there. On the front of the big square plate behind or under the head when back is a leaver that disengages the hook.
Mr. Carter, thank you for posting this video. I found it very informative. I was lucky enough to get my Bessler for free from a retired photographer. It is pretty rusty and dusty. Do you happen to have a video explaining in more detail how you took it apart to clean? Or is it pretty straightforward?
It is easy enough that I could do it, just found your comment. I do not know how to take the knobs off
Great tutorial. I also have 23CII. It came with a color head dichromatic sensor and color adjustment. I had to remove all of it for b&w. I am interested in making big prints with 35mm. Do I have to shoot larger format to get high detail for landscape portraits? Does the lens and cleanliness of film as well as process and high contrast film create a sharp print?
One with little mid tones. I mean so high contrast that it’s black and white. To screen print. Or can I burn a screen with an enlarger?
Brainstorming. Sorry
Hi, thanks for commenting. Fine film developers get more out of 35mm. I stand develop 16mm black and white reversal movies and get grainless films. And then there is 6x9 120mm film if you really want sharp images.
Higher temperature developing, like 90 in D76, or just use D-19 will make contrast high. Lots of agitation, too.
Michael Carter Thank you, I also would like to make a large print from the movies that I make in order to produce a poster 32x 48. I have the film holder my question is will it look too grainy being a small is 16 mm is to blow up to poster size
I got one and you really have to align them. Also you use filters for multigrade printing too
по сравнению с кайзерами,дурстами, джобо увеличителями этот выглядит очень необычно.
Can I have the full frame carrier

I meant alignment, not calibration
It is possible to alter that swing screw, but I never did. No need so far. 16x20 prints looked good to me. I don't know about altering the other direction. There may be something in the manual, and another piece of equipment to buy.
