I have a Toto toilet and the water started running and the bowl wouldn’t fill. I flipped the gasket like you advised, and voila! Works great now! Thanks for your video!
Hello, thanks for the video. We have a Toto CST854. I guess the flush lever seems corroded over time and that's where the water is coming out of the flush tank. The fill valve and flush valve seems okay. Only thing is the tube sometimes slips off. Twice in a month now, the tank has overflowed. And yesterday it flooded the bedroom in the middle of the night. Please advise on what all we need to replace!? :) Thank you.
Thanks for this video, it helped me figure out how to take the flush valve off. For some reason my flush valve closes too fast. Once I flush it, it'll slam shut, sounds like there's a pause, then the tank starts to fill. I'm not sure if there's an internal float within the flush valve to slow down the closing speed, but something's up with it. I'll have to use your information to order/replace it. Hopefully that fixes my problem.
Great idea about the fluidmaster fill valve. I’ve been buying those blue universal toto Korky fill valves that love to hiss, 😂. My 2005 Drake original toilet flush valve broke where the flapper hooks on. So I found out they discontinued the original Drake flush valve that takes the red or blue flapper. So my biggest job is getting the 2 bolts off the tank so I can put in the new flush valve. My toilet is CST443S. Ada height elongated 2 piece Drake toilet.
The handle of my Toto Drake sticks occasionally and keeps running- any suggestions?? Enjoy your helpful videos and the Toto has been awesome! Thank you!
I recommend you replace the handle. Call Toto at 888 295-8134 and give them the model number that is located on the inside of the tank on the back wall. They will tell you the part number so you can buy a new Toto tank lever. You have to use the Toto tank lever.
I have several different brands of toilets and they all have that rubber gasket. I've found they develop a small bubble of water that keeps them from laying flat and keeping a seal. I just cut a small slit on the bubble, the water ejects, and the bubble is gone and now the gasket can make a tight seal. May not be the best long term solution, but it will buy you a few more months.
@@TheGrumpyPlumber nah the gasket develops bubbles in the rubber. American standard has the same issue. Must be something to do with that white/clear material they're using for the gaskets.
Question - I have this same tower assembly. Unfortunately after flushing, the top sit crooked and water continues to run. Will changing the gasket fix that? Thx!
Are you talking about the flush valve or the fill valve? If you’re talking about the flush valve and it’s a one piece toilet, pull the canister out and underneath are three screws with wings attached. Loosen it, straighten it and retighten. If it’s a tank flush valve, pull the tank off, loosen the big 3” nut and straighten the flush valve and retighten. If a fill valve, loosen and straighten and retighten. Now, are you sure the toilet bowl is sitting level? Check to make sure the tank is sitting level.
hey Jim, is there supposed to be a gasket between the drain valve and where it mounts onto the bowl? my new toto toilet wont fill so I took out the drain valve assembly completely and there's no gasket where it meets the bowl
hu go, if you have a two piece Toto toilet, you’re suppose to have a gasket between the tank and the bowl. If you removed the flush valve, there should be a gasket on the bottom of the flush valve. When you install it to the tank, there should be a large nut that tightens it. That tank will sit on the gasket between the tank and the bowl. When you tighten the two bolts, it will squeeze the foam rubber gasket. If you have a one piece Toto, the flush valve should have a gasket and when inserted in the 4” opening, you tighten the three brass studs. On the flush valve canister there is also a gasket so when you flush, it closes and the bowl should fill back up with water. It might help me help you if I knew the model number of your toilet. Another thing you can do is call Toto at 1888 295-8134. If you are missing anything, they’ll get it right out to you.
Hi my Toto is 20 years old ST 864 and started leaking from the handle. How do I lower water level? I''m thinking of replacing fill valve with Fluid Master per your suggestion.
Jim Donevan, your problem is the fill valve. First see if you can find a Toto fill valve. But if you have to, a Fluidmaster will work on an older Toto.
@@TheGrumpyPlumber Thank you. I replaced the fill valve with a Fluidmaster and it seems to be working fine. Like that I can adjust the water levels. Thank you.
I’ve replaced our last three toilets with Toto Drakes - love them! I am having a problem with one of my Toto tower valves though. First issue ever with any of them. The problem is the middle piece that moves up and down does not always drop down all the way to seal the gasket. I then have to take off the lid and push the center plastic down - it will drop an additional 1/2” - 3/4” and then the gasket will seal. I’ve removed the tower flush valve and cleaned the outside of the middle piece and inside of the outer piece with vinegar as it appeared there was a very thin film on both but after reinstalling the middle piece still occasionally doesn’t drop all the way down. Typically it’s if a second flush occurs soon after the first. There is noticeable resistance when you push down which seems weird to me - I would expect it to just drop very smoothly and easily. Any suggestions?
ReitersBlock, I would call Toto and tell them your problem. I bet they would send you a new flush valve. Sounds to me you have enough knowledge to install it. Here is Toto’s number…888 295-8134.
should the fill hose be INSIDE the fill tube (like two out of three of my professionally installed toilets were) our outside the fill tube (like the my 1/2 bath was)? My 1/2 bath toilet had almost no water in the bowl and putting the fill hose *IN* the tube (like the other two) seemed to fix the issue
Jason Berk, the fill hose needs to be located either just above or no more than a half inch in the flush valve tube. If it’s too far into the tube, it could cause a siphoning. That would cause the fill valve to come on and off.
Retha, first thing I would recommend is to change the flapper. Make sure you get the right one for the Toto toilet you have. Make sure the water level in the tank is one inch below the overflow tube. Tighten up the chain from the tank lever to the flapper. If you have a fairly new toilet or just been repaired and you’re having this problem, the installer might not have adjusted it correctly or might not have used the right parts in the repair. Make sure nothing has gone into the flush valve to stop the water flow. Ex. Clorox capsules or a sticker from the side of the tank.

Jill Vinsant, first off, use the standard fluid master fill valve. You must remove the tank to replace the flush valve. Be sure you call Toto customer service (1888 295-8134) and give them the tank number. (CST and a number). This will make sure you get the right flush valve for your toilet.
My toilet was making a high pitch noise at night too. The root cause for me was not the fill valve but the drain valve's gasket (had a weird bubble in it). This is because the gasket was slowly leaking causing the water level to be just at the refill position, causing the fill valve to slowly release water. You can verify this by turning off the water to your toilet overnight to see if the tank is empty the next day.
Another symptom that your flush valve gasket needs replacing is if you sometimes hear a hissing noise coming from your fill valve. I thought my fill valve was going bad but it was the flush valve that was the problem. Turns out there's a warning saying you shouldn't use chlorine tablets on my toilet. Whoops
Thank you for this! I have the Toto drake here in California, I believe it’s a 1.6 or 1.8 gallon per flush model per state laws. I absolutely hate this toilet. The fill line in the bowl is SO low that every time #2 sticks and leaves streaks and marks. Is there a way to adjust the default fill line in the bowl? I can’t imagine people loving this toilet with this horrible issue
googlegirl25, bad news. Even on the old toilets with the higher water line on the bowl, you still got skid marks. That’s why they invented the toilet brush. I bet you are not complaining about the Toto flush or having it plug up. Now all new toilets must flush on 1.2 gallons. There were a lot more complaints when the water saver toilets first came out because they wouldn’t flush. They didn’t complain about skid marks, they just wanted them to flush. Toto designed a toilet that would flush and that’s why people love them.
Googlegirl25, the water level is designed to be at a certain level and can’t be changed. If it goes higher, the water will just drain out and seek the proper level. When your toilet fills with water, it should fill 3/4 to one inch from the top of the 1” overflow tube.
Yeah thats all nice and convenient. But if you knew the difference between the 2 different fill valves. You would know the fluid master or any other generic fill valves won't work. I'm a huge toto fan as thats all I put in my house. Also the only brand that Ill recommend to the customer to have installed.

My question is, should I order the Toto TSU99A.X Universal Fill Valve or the FluidMaster brand that you like? And if so, is there a specific FluidMaster model that would work with my 8+ year old Toto?
I’d recommend you use the standard Fluidmaster fill valve. I think the number is a 445 which is about half the price of the Toto.
Where can I buy that gasket?
jimmy streeter, if you are looking for parts for Toto, call tech support for Toto at 1888 295-8134. They will tell you where to find parts in your area.
What specific model is this? 1.6?
4RUNNA, it is a 1.6 Toto Drake.
@@TheGrumpyPlumber I think you're lucky, I live in texas and installing 1.6 toilets is pretty much illegal unless it's a dual flush with 1.1/1.6 options, I'm 13 years old with a proflo model jerritt 1.28, and I'll say one thing. It's TERRIBLE. Even after I adjusted it to use more water AND put in a fluidmaster 400h fill valve, it clogs three times monthly. Chances are one day I'll put in an ada height eco drake in my own bathroom. If not that, then a kohler elmbrook.
@@jsnxbskscnskcnskcjbzjzjbvd I installed a two piece Drake elongated 1.0/0.8 GPF.
out at our cottage. It's amazing it flushes so well without any problems. Very quiet toilet.
My tank has NO numbers on the inside, nor under the tank top.
Shirley Porterfield, if your toilet is a Toto, the name will be between the seat and the tank. Every Toto tank I have looked at had the three letters and some numbers on the back wall, right hand side. If your toilet does not have these things, I don’t believe it’s a Toto.
