I can give you a rundown of the changes in dd2, spoiler free. First, ignore the mtx. They can only be bought once, and are all things you aquire just by playing normally. Even the portcrystal is pointless. You can only place 10, and you can get 11 in-game. Capcom just tacked it on to squeeze money, but the game itself hasn't been tampered with. No nerfing of things to encourage purchases. Even the single-use item to alter your characters can be bought for 500rc in game, which you'll get easily by being hired a couple of times.
The classes have been split up. Thief and archer, instead of strider. I was bummed, but by level 5 with the thief, I didn't mind. Combat has vastly improved. You can also unlock warfarer vocation, which lets you equip one of every weapon and swap between them. I've got daggers, a 4x xp bow and a staff for levitation.
Inventory management is worse than dd1, actually. You can't equip from storage, and the cursor has no memory, so dumping items onto a pawn takes ages. Quests are still easily missable, not well explained, and don't really tell you where to go, unless its to a specific character.
The game gets trivial around lvl 40. Theres no hardmode or new content for ng+. But you can actually stay in the postgame (no spoilers. Its like the disaster world from dd1.) despite there being a time limit of 12 days. Just complete all the areas you're supposed to be doing, but *don't* go to the one near the sea. Thats the final bit. But if you do all the others, you stop the ticking clock and can just explore all the new stuff.
Dragonsplague has people saying it ruins their save. Thats total falsehood. Just rest for one week and every important npc will revive. You can also use wakestones on specific characters, or rez the whole town at once with an eternal wakestone. But as long as you toss your pawn into the brine every so often, dragonplague isn't an issue.
The only constant enemy in DD2 is fall damage. If you drop 10 feet, expect to belly flop for half your hp. There's no way to reduce fall damage, by item or skill/augment.
    Thats about it, without spoilers.
The game is twice as good, but the menus are 33% worse.
And I'm still having a blast.
If you liked the first, you'll fall for the 2nd within 2 hours.

I'm hoping the morons crying about the pointless micro transactions cause it to go on sale soon. I was planning on buying it on release but I figured some of the review bombing might make it go on sale early, so I held off. Running through the first game again right now
