I'm not sure why i want to share this with you all but i keep thinkering about something with this song. When i heard this song for the first time and looked to the picture, a painting and a situation came into mind. I will try to write it all down to read. The lyrics remind me of a painful and emotional parting of a married man and wife in a historical context. The painting(s) i was reminded of was foremost: A Huguenot from John Everett Millais, the second i found later was: The Black Brunswicker from the same earlier mentioned painter. The historical situation i thought of as the following: In a rural Catholic village in the mountainous centre of Switzerland, the harvests where poor again and exept for the peoples own sustenance there was nothing more left to sell as surplus (0:51-0:59). The newly wed couple knew they had to pay their depth from starting their own household and farm. The depth was not crippling and was payable with one good harvest normally. The recently wed couple knew what would be coming and thought back to when they gave their vows in the church before the Lord and each other. A couple of days later gathered the whole town for the announcement from the official from the canton who declared that the canton was asking for volunteers to send away as Reisläufer (mercenaries) to fight and earn money for themselves and the canton. For the rural male populace this was one of the few chances they got to earn enough money if their harvest was poor or had loss with their cattle. There where a lot of volunteers who needed money to feed their families and loved ones. The next day they would march out. After receiving the general absolution and blessing by the priest they where allowed to formally say goodbye to their wives and families. The married couple embraced each other knowing that they had to go through the heartfelt pain of parting and uncertainty. This moment would be the last time for a long while that they would feel their touch and embrace. After they let go of their embrace, the man walked back to the other volunteers. The marching order followed, a couple dozen men set on with halberds and pikes in their hands. The woman watching him walking away without looking back (0:00-0:18). Some tears where shed as the men walked into the distance, towards an unknown destiny in service of French king in the Wars of Religion. The woman kept watching in the good faith that she would not forget his face from before this whole ordeal untill her husbands unit was no longer visible (1:10-1:28). The picture above should more or less show how the woman looks when her husband walks away at the end of the outlined situation. I hope you don't mind sharing this with you all, i could finally put this thought in text which bothered me for a long while.
