In Australia, urban planning is marketed to students as a creative, wide realm, worldly and fun course akin to sim city where you can change cities and use your wild imagination on subjective social ideas. In reality urban planning in Australia is a lot different. It is a statutory micro managed world full of spreadsheets and "cog in the wheel" decisions. It really is nothing like the courses they market. And that is the great sadness of it all really. People enter the field with high hopes and visions and realize quickly that it is just to process applications and stamp plans with no creative input at all. I would recommend all students to first ask "how does this course relate to the reality of the job?" before wasting their time and their money. Property development in Australia and real estate form the highest purchase and sale aspiration among our population. The town planner is often seen as an obstacle and the main thing people want from you, the only thing is just to process forms and letters quickly. That is all people actually want from your role. They don't want your creativity, your ideas etc etc. I really think it all boils down to keeping a false economy going and the town planning profession suffering just to keep its own existence and relevance in the scheme of things (from my own experience!)

Wow! The salaries in private companies seem to be a little bit over the top. At least in Germany (40% cut for taxes and insurance) not even CEOs of middle scale companies make that much.

Urban planning won't get you rich. It is mostly work for Public administration, communities especially. So they have a small budget. In Germany you make between 28-45.000€ a year. Depending on your experience and your skills.

I feel like turning down the NOAA fellowship because of her husband broke her heart, and I feel bad for her that he wasn't willing to look for another well paying job in Washington to support her and her passions. Marriage sounds awful.

Well your comment is probably extremely embarrassing for her to read. Maybe next time think about the fact that she probably reads the comments on here.... whether what you said is true or not

Life With Samone you actually think this woman is still watching for a reading comments on a Kahn Academy video she was involved in 2 years ago? Sure, Jan. Plus, it was an observation. Anyone and their mother could tell she was extremely upset about the fact that she had to give up that fellowship for her husband.

What if her husband also loved his job and didn't want leave it? Either way, someone is going to have to leave their job/turn down an opprotunity. It's called compromise and sacrifice. Something that you need to do in order to have a successfull marriage..Does not mean her marriage isn't loving and supportive.

@@mlitt1996 based purely on the way she explains it, he wasn’t nearly as passionate about his job as she was about that fellowship. It seemed like he was more focused on money than sacrificing that for her. I didn’t say there’s no way he loved his job as much, but the way she described it does not bode well for that assumption.

Here is something that no one yet can help me understand... I have been researching this major (Urban Planning and Studies) to do for my undergrad. However, can you get a job in this field with only an undergrad??

If you want a job with a municipality, expect to intern for a City or getting a masters degree. Let me know if you have more questions!
