10:58 It's funny that you mention that meta-magic because back in Third Edition I had a sorcerer who used Energy Substitution to make every spell she cast acid. No reason, just because I decided that was her thing. It got to the point where the DM began working things around it such as a floor collapsing when she used Cone of Acid in the tavern where we got ambushed. At the end of our campaign, we finally managed to hunt down who was sending groups of mercenaries after us and found out the king had placed a bounty on our party from rampant property damage. The humous bit is we had claimed our own bounty at one point because we had found a wanted poster that we misinterpreted because it referred to us as "The Blight Witch's Cabal" and brought in a completely unrelated wizard for our own crimes. (She was planning on doing something nasty and was very confused when we busted in to stop her.)

Because a round of combat is always 6 seconds, distance per round easily converts into distance by time and vice versa. Because of this, we can say that c=1.8 gm/rnd.
Now, chaos bolt has the ability that if you roll doubles on your 2d8 damage, it jumps to a new target within 30 feet of the previous target.
If we assume that doubles is always rolled and that each target is the maximum distance apart, then striking a line of 197 million people would cause the bolt to travel faster than light.
This distance traveled is almost exactly 45 times around the Earth's circumference.

I think twin spell is fine because it only has one *initial* target, and *possibly* chains from there. That rule is really there to stop you just getting double value from AoE spells or multi-target buffs. I would definitely allow twinned Chaos Bolt or even Chain Lightning.
Edit: apparently the rule has been clarified to disallow this. However I maintain that this ruling is dumb and would still allow twinned chain lightning or chaos bolt.

Regarding the discussion afterwards about meta magic, i feel subtle spell is greatly underrated. In campaigns I play, the fact that casting a spell involves magic hand waggling and weird words to be said comes into play, but with subtle spell I can just weave casting suggestion into a casual conversation to make it seem to others as though you're just some really convincing person. As well as being able to manifest spells if your hands have been completely bound or somebody tries to gag your mouth. Or you can still use your spells if Silence was cast in your area to turn the tables. If your enemies recognize you as a caster, they might try to waste time trying to do anti caster precautions on you like these, to which you can turn it against them.
Another very important factor is if the campaign involves fighting magic users often. Counterspell does not work against subtle spell casted spells, which can be HUGE if you don't want to end up wasting a higher level spell slot for nothing.
Results may vary depending on they type of campaign vs other meta magic options, but I still like taking subtle as one of my first 2 metas (usually twin for double con spell buffs like fly/haste for the 2nd). Quicken spell, while powerful, is limited in potential a bit aside from tossing in another cantrip until you get spells that require repeated actions later on, like telekinesis, or sunbeam, so I pick that up at level 10 for the 3rd meta magic when you'll be gaining access to spells of that nature.

A big factor for subtle being seen as underrated I would say depends on DMs. They dont exactly take this feature into account and sometimes someone just says they whisper the vocals when they shouldn't be permitted to. It certainly needs to be regulated for its use to be even more emphasized. Also from personal play being gagged and such, silenced, doesn't come into play that often.

Subtle spell may be ignored by beginners or damage blasty sorcerers, but its actually probably the strongest metamagic there. Letting you cast magic in social situations without raising any alerts, launching a sneak attack...
Casting magic after the evil bandits cut out your tongue and chopped off your hands... or maybe just you and your friends are tied up, a quick subtle spell to cut the ropes or something and you see where I'm going with this.

      @JackCinder 4 года назад +10

@@MilkShotsMoo True, the being gagged doesn't happen often, but on a few occurrences it was pretty nice to use. The other benefit though is being able to cast under the silence spell. I've had our cleric use silence in situations against casters as a means to neutralize them, while allowing me to still be able to cast spells. The biggest use by far for me however has been using suggestion in conversations seamlessly and being able to avoid counterspell. Fighting a wizard and losing a spell slot to counterspell is extremely painful when you can just spend one sorcerery point to ensure it'll go off without a hitch. While these may seem minor, and not always applicable, the other thing to take into account is how cheap subtle spell is sorcerery points wise. Spells you'll twin will usually end up costing you 2-3 points most of the time, and quicken costs 2, but subtle is just an easy 1 point that always feels easy to afford when you think it might be needed.

Warlocks are fake casters that failed at worshipping something for power (i.e. couldn't cut it with the real faiths/nature); Bards are dabbling stage magicians; Sorcerers have to rely on a gimmick for their power (ancestry, Wild Magic - which used to be a Wizard school, mind you - or some other outer variable).
Granted, Bards are my second-favorite class and have always been since my favorite Final Fantasy Job was always Red Mage, but my point still stands... :)
Also, I give Artificers a pass since magic items have to come from somewhere (and it seems that item enchanting has been largely forgotten/ignored since 3.5/Pathfinder, when it was WAY too codified).

You hit once. You deal 8 + 8 + 6 damage. Since you got 8 and 8, it's thunder damage, and it bounces. It hits a second thing, and it's still the same spell, so it deals 22 thunder damage and bounces again.
Halfling luck indeed lets you roll again if your attack roll misses.
But if you're an Elf with Elven Accuracy, and you hide before casting the spell, and you have high enough stats, the change to hit rises to 7999/8000 for every single thing, and it bounces every time. 176,000 average damage on a first level spell!

with the Unicorn Spirit Totem, i heal everyone i choose within 60ft by my druid level (currently 6) in HP every time i cast a healing spell that consumes a slot. with healing spirit i can heal anyone within the spirit's area without using an action and can move the area with a bonus action. with aura of vitality i can heal anyone within 30ft with a bonus action.
so, if a player i want to heal is within 30 ft of me and inside the healing spirit's area, i can heal them once with the spirit (no action used), then again with the aura(bonus action used), then again with cure wounds [or healing word] (standard action used) , and then again with the spirit totem (casted a healing spell consuming a slot [cure wounds/healing word]. all in one turn.
this is an anti-nuke. removing the most damage in one turn, so far. i may get even more stackable healing effects later and come back to this comment someday.

That means two pair jumps to two targets, three of a kind jumps to three (because A&B, B&C, and A&C all match), and if all 4 d8s match it jumps to six new targets (AB, AC, AD, BC, BD, CD). It's only a 1/512 chance on top of a 1/20 chance, so why not go nuts with it?

I remember reading a book, can't recall what it's called or the author, but it's set in a world where most people have some kind of magical ability. The main character, as far as he knew, didn't. The thing is, these abilities could vary from fairly inconsequential, to quite strong. People with very strong abilities were called mages or wizards, I can't remember which. An example of a weak power might be someone being able to help plants grow a bit better, or making a small light. A powerful ability, of which there were two other characters who were strong enough to be considered mages, would be that one of them could effectively polymorph things into other things. The other was able to cast very powerful illusions. This main character was actually a mage, but his power wasn't obvious. What his power did, completely outside of his own control, would be to keep him safe from harm. A good example of this is that at one point he was in a confrontation with the polymorph mage, and the polymorph mage simply couldn't hit him with his ability. A cloud of gnats popped up in front of him, causing his ability to hit them instead. It was a very interesting book, to say the least, lol

I think one of the best ways to give Wizards and Sorcerers unique identities again is to just split the schools down the middle.
Wizards would get Conjuration, Transmutation, Divination, and Necromancy. These schools of magic require complex arcane formulas and knowledge of how the different planes of existence interact in order to weave these spells.
Sorcerers would get Evocation, Abjuration, Illusion, and Enchantment. These schools of magic require a primal and instinctual connection to the world, and arcane power thrumming from the very blood of the caster in order to manifest in the world.
This change would cement Sorcerers as the spell nukers, and Wizards as the utility monsters.

You can’t twin cast fireball, you can empower it but twin casting only works on single target spells. If you could, that would be so busted. But if you really wanted to nuke someone you could quicken a spell and empower it (you can empower a spell after casting it), then empower or twin (or both) your next spell. That being said you are blowing 4 sorcery points minimum and empower doesn’t make your spell stronger, it only lets you reroll your bad damage dice.

    • @Cosmo_Samoyed
      @Cosmo_Samoyed 4 года назад +2

The thing about sorcerers is they gain power by having the essence of a magical creature within them, but by that logic a dragon has the essence of a magical creature as their y’know essence.
    Therefore isn’t a dragon a sorcerer.
    What is their origin, dragon?
But if we say, yes they are sorcerers because they have innate spellcasting, multiple player classes posses innate spellcasting, are drow children sorcerers?
Because of this, couldn’t you say that their could be a “mortal” patron for the warlock, a bodyguard power of friendship warlock who gained their tankiness by forming a bond of mutual protection with a “magical creature”.
Maybe there is a group of warlocks who recruit members into their fold by forming a pact with them.
Maybe you are the personal guard of a noble sorcerer who has granted you power.
Somebody homebrew this quick, I can’t, I have almost no experience as a player or Dm.

RE changing damage types in spells. If you're including Unearthed Arcana, it is actually possible for a wizard to change the damage types in spells: Lore Mastery has that as a feature at level 2, and it's unlimited usage. I'm currently playing a wizard using that subclass, and Thunderball is absolutely the BEST!! (cue James Bond theme) And even better, once per long rest, I can also change the save the spell uses, so oh, you need to make sure that rogue doesn't just evasion their way out of your Thunderball? No problem, it's a Con save now! Added bonus, since it doubles any prof bonus on knowledge skills, you know ALL THE THINGS!!

Another fun tip about Chaos Bolt- the Empowered Spell metamagic lets you reroll damage die, up to your Charisma mod for one sorcery point. Your d8's don't match? Reroll one! That's another 1/8 chance to chain the spell. If that doesn't work, reroll the OTHER d8. I don't remember the numbers, but I think it's something like a 30% chance to chain on the first attack? It's a fun spell, and they gave it to the one class that can really game its system, too!

There's one thing that all Wild sorcerers NEED to know.
One of the 50 wild surges maximises the damage of the next spell you cast within 1 minute. Meaning, if that happens, and you cast this spell, and hit with it, it automatically deals 8 + 8 + 6 = 22 damage. And since both of the d8s gave a result of 8, the damage type is Thunder, and it bounces. Once it hits the second target, it's still the same spell, so the damage is still maximised, so it again deals 22 thunder damage, and bounces, meaning you're going to hit things for 22 thunder damage until you miss your attack roll. If you have a high charisma, and proficiency, and the enemies have low AC, this can be decreased to a 1/20 chance of missing. So with this surge, you deal an average of 440 damage as a first level spell.
If you managed to hide first, granting disadvantage on every attack roll until you're revealed, the chance of getting a 1 decreases to 1/400. And if you're an Elf who chose the Elven Accuracy racial feat from XGE, this decreases further to 1/8000! On every single roll.
For an average of 176,000 damage! On a first level spell! And add another 48,000 for each level you've upcasted it.

This happened to me in a campaign once! My DM allowed me to destroy 30 kobolds and cripple a drow wizard ordering them around with one cast of Chaos Bolt. I think there's a technicality for the rules lawyers that says max damage isn't an actual roll...so it doesn't trigger Chaos Bolt, but it's too cool a 2% chance of a wild surge not to allow IMO
