I personally saw a 9ft tiger shark in the waters off Kahuku Pt. swim toward Malaekahana Park in 2002. Sharks are everywhere. Some people are lucky while others not so.
I didn’t know him but he sounds like a wonderful person. Thank you to him for giving so much to help others. Prayers for his family who will miss him so much 🙏❤🕊️🕯️

OMG! This is so tragic. Its stunning in that we rightfully consider our Lifeguards as guardians and heroes. I am very saddened by this though I never met the man. This will while this will be painful for the entire community on O'ahu and well beyond, he obviously set a great example of how to live with and love the ocean.
Damn. I knew Tamayo when he was a little kid! LIke, little-little. We lived in Punalu'u next to Kaya's store, and Tamayo and his mom and dad lived in the same little cluster of houses we did. It was like ... out of the houses maybe 1-2 had a working telephone at any given time. It was very humble times back then.

Oh wow i stayed in that huge concrete condo building next to the OLD HAWAIIAN CEMETERY &WEE CHAPEL . Went to that old store with the yummy food being cooked up at the back if store. Damn good. Really cool temp wise it rained ever afternoon. Not swimming waters for sure pritty rough out there. Me no go.

If they actually are it's likely because there are more and more people enjoying the ocean and there may be more and more sharks as protections have been in place for some time now.

@@honkeykong9563 I heard on some new clips on the recent Florida shark attacks (2 in one day, 3 victims, believed to be done by the same tiger shark) that these attacks are happening more frequently and will continue due to warmer sea temperature

I think for most sharks that is the case. Not with tiger sharks though. They’re responsible for almost every fatal attack in Hawaii, and they take more than one curious bite.

I can only shake my head when people talk about how rare shark attacks are.
They say the same thing about being struck by lightning but common sense tells us not to play outside in thunderstorms.
Though I think I’d rather die by electrocution than be eaten alive.
So sad what happened, but with the governor putting a 10,000 fine for every shark that is now killed, I'm thinking this will happen again and again. Condolences to that family.

SO MANY VERSIONS? One says he was paddling out w/others on lunch break so witnessed attack. Another says no; unattended. If unattended death could be from a number of causes and bit later. What is the truth? It was also brown water conditions on my NE windward side, risky to surf/swim after rains cloud the water, due to sharks come in to eat the fish eating the debris. Moku'auia, Goat island, is .4mi. offshore as well..I HOPE this does NOT spur a 'shark killing fest' as happens elsewhere; Tamayo would never want that He was a TRUE ocean person. We all loved him; he was a well known N.Shore lifeguard...8 years; Always SMILING. To his Ohana: E ikaika hoʻi ʻoe B well and strong. I hope the public gives you PRIVACY.

Nah....I think it's awesome they had her cover this because she personally knows him, and the community. Her reporting gave this story so much more of an inside look at the whole situation, in a very personal intimate level. I liked it, and appreciated the DIFFERENT approach, as opposed to just a cold out of touch reporter stating the facts.

I've been making it a habbit to thank our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for EVERYTHING. Recently in Episode 7, of The CHOSEN, Jesus ressurects Lazarus. The Show is a show mind you, but it hasn't strayed to far from the original script. Anyway, Thomas has become very upset by this miracle, asking "why?" and the way Jesus then explains it to him, I feel is somewhat of a fitting response. Basically God's ways are higher than ours so, it would be difficult for us to understand using our human brains. We just have to believe and have faith He's doing all that he does for our Good, because he loves us ALL. And because He is Good. AMEN
I thank God the Father of creation for sending Jesus, I thank Jesus for enduring what He did on the cross for ALL of us unworthy sinners, and for sending the Holy Spirit, and I thank the Holy Spirit for never leaving us, and staying with us to help discern God's TRUTHS. I thank Jesus because, He, God the Father, and the Holy Spirit are one, and Jesus Christ is the way, the truth, and the life.
I don't know how else to explain it, Jesus is the Lord of Lords, the King of Kings, the one we call the ALMIGHTY. So I will continue to THANK him for everything, because that's why, what, and how I believe. I pray it doesn't take a life or death situation to start developing a real relationship with Jesus, but for some, that's like the only way seemingly, but regardless of how often we break His heart day in and day out, He's always gonna be there, amidst it all, and no matter how far we think we have strayed, He's willing to forgive us, and lead us back in the right direction, because He is the Good Shepherd, always tending, and ever mindful of His flock.

No, it's not. I've never heard of a tiger shark hunting at noon. They usually sleep during the day. They usually only hunt at night , early dusk, or early dawn. This is beyond unusual. So sad for everyone. 😢

Sharks have been extremely aggressive this year. Water temperature is very hot and it’s changing the dynamics.
Or sharks are just doing what they always do or have done for millions of years - eat anything they can that’s available to them. I don’t understand why everyone keeps making excuses for shark attacks. It’s very simple. You get in the water, a shark may decide you are his or her dinner. Period.
