Those 16 minutes didn't feel long enough because goddamn, the editing and segway-ing from topic to topic was smooth as butter. I don't even care what the next game in this series is -though I'd love for it to be PCB- I'm just looking forward for what's next!
Well, I think I found the best way possible to learn Touhou facts and information, thanks! And being honest, *to fully get these videos it's necessary to watch them more than a single time*, because aside words and images that link to each other, you also got the character shouting things, which is perfectly unnecessary to actually re-read, but does give a nice touch to it. Anyway, great work! (also yeah, I'd like to see SA next)
Well, thank you! At first, I thought you were going to say that the text is sometimes unnecessary, so I would add less text for the next videos, but if it doesn't bother you, then alright! I'll keep editing that way. :)
I love your videos Surnist, they're very very well edited, I hope to see you grow your channel, because you deserve it man, you're one of my favorite channels on this site.

That was sooooo interesting! A lot of stuff i didn't know! And so many cute jokes😁! And yeah, makes sense for kogasa to be like that since she IS a blacksmith in the mangas
Well, that's mainly why she is a blacksmith in any type of media. But again, thanks, these take a lot of time and I appreciate the fact that people enjoy them.
@@Surnist yes of course! And yes i absolutely adore these! Pretty sure you are one of the few that semi-regolarly posts excellent not-gameplay touhou videos that are always incredibly enterntaining and interesting!
I don't buy Nazrin's name being based on that one Persian name. "Wild rose" means nothing in the context of Buddhism, the game, or Nazrin's species. ZUN hasn't given a character a meaningless name since the PC-98 era. I believe Nazrin's name most likely derives from the plant called ナズナ (nazuna, also known as "shepherd's purse" in English). Nazuna is one of the 7 "spring herbs" traditionally used by the Japanese to make the dish nanakusa-gayu ("7 herb rice porridge") always eaten on January 7th in order to bless or commemorate the New Year. The herbs are all spring herbs because its believed that making the dish and eating it will allow for a peaceful, prosperous New Year (spring symbolizes tranquility). Nazuna, being a plant of spring, connects to UFO because the entire game takes place during the spring. Nazrin's stage theme is called "At the End of Spring" (translated from the poetic 春の湊に, "at the harbor of spring"). Nazuna was a common topic in Japanese poetry and was prevalent in Buddhist poetry as well. In fact, nazuna was said to be able to ward off against evil and is offered to the Shakyamuni Buddha as a symbolic gift. It's also said to be able to heal the body profoundly if consumed. As you know, Nazrin is the envoy of Bishamonten. Bishamonten is one of the Seven Lucky Gods. Another of the Seven Lucky Gods is Daikokuten, the god of grains and medicine. In SSiB, Tewi mentions that Daikokuten could make better medicine than even Eirin. Daikokuten's symbol is the rat or mouse and he's often seen accompanied by them. The "rin" part of Nazrin is just common cute way to end a name in Japanese. It could also be derived from the チューリン (churin) of Kirby Squeak Squad. The churin are mouse minions of Squeak Squad leader Daroach that go all around Dream Land, looking for and stealing treasure. Nazrin's ability is to find whatever she's looking for (particularly treasure). ZUN has gone on record before saying he enjoys the Kirby series. His first Amiibo was even Kirby himself. UFO as a whole makes various references to other game series including Radiant Silvergun and Space Invaders so I don't think this explanation is too unlikely. Anyway, it seems Nazrin (ナズーリン) is either a combination of nazuna (ナズナ) and the common feminine suffix, ~rin (リン) or nazuna (ナズナ) and churin (チューリン).
SoPM confirmed that Kogasa is makes herself appear to look like an ippon-datara so her surname (多々良) does in fact reference that youkai. WaHH even goes a step further and confirms that Kogasa has expert blacksmithing skills, just like the ippon-datara. Ichirin's surname, Kumoi (雲居) doesn't literally have to mean "home in the clouds" or "living in the clouds". That word, although literally meaning "cloud residence" more commonly refers to "the sky" or "clouds". Ichirin (一輪) literally meaning "one ring" or "one wheel" can refer to her chakram or the Dharma Wheel of Buddhism that represents the Noble Eightfold Path but it can also refer to her species. Although she's labeled as a generic "youkai" she might actually be a wanyuudou (輪入道 "wheel monk"), a wheel youkai who has the face of a bald monk. Looking deeper, the kind of wanyuudou she could actually be is the katawaguruma (片輪車), a wheel youkai with the body of a woman. This makes sense considering that Ichirin herself is Buddhist monk (nun) and that she's good friends with Unzan, who himself is a nyuudou (specifically, a 見越入道 mikoshi-nyuudou). Both Ichiren and Unzan themselves could also be based on the Ichiren Nyuudou (一連入道 "chain monk"), a juzu (数珠 "prayer bead") tsukumogami that eventually becomes a great Buddhist priest. Unzan's (雲山) name, literally meanining "cloud mountain", is a reference to a brand of Japanese liquor by the same name (雲山). That's a very ZUN thing to do.
You mistakenly say that Minamitsu's surname is Minamitsu. It's not. Her surname is Murasa. Her first name is Minamitsu. Lots of fans get this mixed up because her theme is called "Captain Murasa". It's written like that because you always adress captains of ships/airplanes by their last name. Anyway, you kind of missed the point of her first name. Minamitsu (水蜜) has a much more basic meaning. First off, it's a pun on the word 水密 (suimitsu, "water tight") (although her name is pronounced "Minamitsu", it uses the same characters for the type of peach "suimitsu"). The pun exists because, remember, Murasa tried to sink Byakuren's ship and she succeded but Byakuren rose out of the ocean on a new, floating ship. This ship (The Palanquin) was based on the ship Murasa died on and Byakuren gave it to her. Since it's flying, it's unsinkable. Thus, water tight (水密 suimitsu). Also, the 蜜 character in Murasa's name literally means "nectar" or "peach" but, in Japanese Buddhist terminology, it means "offering". Her name would then translate to "Unsinkable Offering", if taking into account the pun. That makes sense since the gift (offering) Byakuren gave her was the unsinkable Palanquin. Anyway, you were right about her surname, Murasa. It's based on that specific type of funayurei. I don't blame you for not being able to find the most relevant meaning of 蜜, that information is not available at all in English.
As for Shou, I think you've completely glossed over what her name is actually supposed to mean. Her first name, 星 (Shou), literally just means "star" but there's way more to it than you even presented. First of all, the name is a reference to the game's title (星蓮船 "Star Lotus Ship"). Shou is the avatar of Bishamonten. Bishamonten is one of the Four Heavenly Kings and one of the Seven Lucky Gods. The Four Heavenly Kings rule the four directions. Bishamonten is responsible for the north direction and the north sky (and thus, every star in the north). In Chinese astrology, a similar concept can be seen with the Four Symbols (constellations). One of the symbols is the White Tiger (Baihu in Chinese, Byakko in Japanese). The White Tiger is the constellation of the west and it's associated with the element of metal. In Japan, The Four Symbols are used sometimes but the Four Heavenly Kings largely out-popularize them. Bishamonten, as one of the Seven Lucky Gods, rules over all precious metals, similar to Byakko. As I'm sure you know, the symbol of Bishamonten is the tiger. The connection to stars is clear. Segwaying from that, her surname is much less convoluted. Toramaru (寅丸) refers to tigers. 寅 (tiger) is used because the symbol of Bishamonten is the tiger. Bishamonten is represented by the tiger because there's a popular legend in which the god Bishamonten helps Prince Shotoku defeat the anti-Buddhist Mononobe clan during the hour of the tiger on the day of the tiger in the year of the tiger. Conversely, Bishamonten (called Duowe Tianwang in Chinese) is represented, associated with and/or symbolized by rats/mice in China (which is probably why Nazrin is a mouse; if you remember it's stated that the real Bishamonten sent Nazrin to check up on Shou). The maru (丸) in Toramaru most likely means money/treasure because, as one of the Seven Lucky Gods, Bishamonten rules over precious metals, treasures, and wealth. Oh, yeah, and the symbol of Daikokuten (another of the Seven Lucky Gods) is the rat as well. Nazrin probably takes inspiration from both gods. Daikokuten and Bishamonten were both heavily influenced by the Hindu god of wealth, Kubera (also known as Vaisravana), whose symbol was a mongoose (in China and Japan this became a rat/mouse). Daikokuten is more heavily influenced by the Hindu/Buddhist god Mahakala (a form of the Hindu Shiva), however. The Seven Lucky Gods are referenced a lot in UFO. The entire concept of the Treasure Ship (Palanquin) is taken from the Seven Lucky Gods, who travel on a treasure ship. In fact, in the title screen of UFO features Reimu standing on a small boat. This small boat contains a mallet, a big sack, and coral. Daikokuten's symbols are his mallet and his large bag. Coral was considered valuable in Medieval Japan so the Treasure Ship was often depicted containing a stock of coral as well as other common riches like gold and silver. I can ramble on and on about all the mythology in UFO so I'll just wrap up Shou here. Shou Toramaru altogether means "Star Tiger Treasure" or "Tiger Treasure of the Stars". Oh yeah and her beta name used 虎 instead of 寅 in Toramaru. 虎 is just a different kanji that says the same thing, "tiger". Interestingly, 虎丸 is an idiom that means "drunk person" (another ZUN drinking joke). The only reason we even know this is because ZUN accidentally left that rendition of her name in UFO's music room comments.
Moving on from that long tirade, it seems you basically got everything for Byakuren down. Her name is really simple. Byakuren (白蓮) contains one of the kanji from the game's title (星蓮船), lotus (蓮) and the kanji for her surname, Hijiri (聖), is present in the name of the Holy Palanquin Ship (聖輦船). Beyond that, the name Byakuren could also refer to the well known Buddhist text, the Lotus Sutra (in Sanskrit, सद्धर्मपुण्डरीक सूत्र Saddharma Puṇḍarīka Sūtra, "Sūtra on the White Lotus of the Sublime Dharma"). The Lotus Sutra famously preaches that ANYONE can reach enlightenment. This connects well with Byakuren being benevolent towards both humans and youkai. Beyond that, her name might also be a reference the the character Byakuren Ri (李 白蓮) from the 1998 novel "Shanghai Fantasy Night" (朱雀十五) by author Rin Fujiki. ZUN references her works from time to time in his games and it seems his whole obsession with the word "Shanghai" came from that book. And as for Nue...you basically said everything there is to say about her name. It's that simple. But there's one thing you missed. According to the famous Japanese dictionary, the Kojien (広辞苑), "封獣" is slang for "companion of a monk". Nue is on friendly terms with the Myouren Temple and even hangs out there, so the name's meaning sticks. Anyway...nice video otherwise! It's always enjoyable to see new and creative Touhou content being made.
I understand where all of this is coming from, and you got some excellent points, I must agree that I didn't go as far as I could have gone with the research. But then again, I'm not a native japanese, I could have never gotten everything, like liquor references, etc. As for the Murasa part, I got told of it after the video was out, it's a problem I glossed over because, again, I did this video in a small amount of time, so I spent more time on the wikis than anything, that prompted me to not only miss a lot of details but also mess up Murasa's name. I know I've made a lot of mistakes in that video, and I understand that people might get pissed about that... But again...I'm just a simple man, still I appreciate that you wrote all of that ! I'll need to double, even triple check what I'm doing next time.
U miss one important thing about Kogasa's connection to blacksmithing ie., she's a blacksmith herself. In WaHH she smith needle for Reimu and she's really good at it.
I love this video and how much effort you put into it, but I have a little thing to point out. Thing that also can be connected to Kogasa's second name is a fact that she is a blacksmith (as I recall in Reimu's case she would make her needles, but it might have apeared in a printwork...). Also saying that blacksmiths wore geta sandals is kinda a stretch. I mean geta are commonly worn as traditional japanese footwead afterall
