  • I’m going to cut right to the chase…this engine doesn’t belong in this car, the semi-autonomous driving features aren’t fully baked and this Sensus interface makes you wish you had Thor’s hammer at times. All that being said, I really kind of like the all-new Volvo S90. MSRP as-tested: $66,105. testdrivenow.co...

      I agree the sedan should have a few more features added to make it even more luxurious but his review was very harsh. This is still a beautiful underrated sedan that deserves more credit.

    That's the first car review I've seen that was filmed in the Albany, NY, area. The S90 looks great while passing the SUNY/D&H building on Broadway!
    I have a 2017 S90 Inscription and LOVE IT!
    By the way, stop getting hung up on a 4-cylinder powering a luxury car. This is the 21st century. If a car can get 316 HP and sub-6 second 0-60, WHILE getting 31 MPG on the highway, then it has the right engine combination.

    Hi Steve, long time subscriber and fan of your content. I have too disagree with you on Sensus and Pilot Assist 2, I find the Pilot Assist 2 a better working system than the one found in the E-Class. Also, imo Volvo steering controls are the simplest to use in the business. Sensus also seems to be hit or miss for many, some complaining about lag, but have still not had that problem on my own 2016 XC90 or many of the press cars I've driven.

    • @charleshu5752
      @charleshu5752 6 лет назад

      I think this press car is using the last patch, it didn't have march software update as the NAV screen is still the old version. The march patch fixed a lot of the issues what he talked about including improving the pilot assist

    I'm on my 2nd Volvo and thought I'd be a loyalist for a long time...that was until my 2015.5 S60 R-Design became the last of it's kind as a 6-cylinder Volvo. I don't think it's a bad thing to embrace fuel economy and low emissions but at least give consumers somewhat of a choice within the brand. An honest and excellent review as always Steve.

    I completely agree with your assessment. I test drove an XC 90 Inscription when it first came out. Beautiful vehicle inside and out and overall driving experience was good. I thought the large tablet display would be a great UI until I actually tried using it. Many other manufacturers have found (cough Ford, Honda) that a full touch screen or capacitive button UI is terrible. Basic HVAC, Radio, etc should be physical buttons. I find MMI and Idrive to be much better as once you get used to them you can operate the most common functions without looking at the center screen.
    The all 4 cylinder line-up is a mistake IMO and I think the vehicles sell in spite of it not because of it. They are just adding complexity on top of complexity to get to the HP numbers to be competitive. How much better would this be with a nice NA V-6 or DI Turbo V-6.

    • @1973TJM
      @1973TJM 7 лет назад

      Did you try using the VOICE button? It obviates the need to use the touch screen. As you said, once you get used to a system, you can operate the most common functions without looking at the center screen--it is what I am experiencing as I learn my new S90.
      Volvo has made the Ward's Top 10 engine list 4 of the last 7 years, including '15, '16, and ''17. You might review their lists, and see what the world is producing to make that Top 10 list. I think it is brilliant move, to focus everything on 4-cylinders. It certainly helps with economy of scale for them, hence, profitability. That is what can happen when a businessman invests around $11 Billion in an auto company to bolster its future.
      For North America, every engine comes turbocharged, with an optional supercharger thrown in--to boost HP an Torque.
      Plenty of people criticize Volvo for that 4 cylinder, as not having enough power compared to what the others offer. Of course, the others CHARGE a bunch more for that. How much more than 315 HP does one need anyway? Well, the T8 90 series adds another complexity (electricity power), bringing up the HP to 400HP. Not too shabby.

    Every one of the features you wish had a button, could be turned on or activated, using the voice button on the steering wheel. As a new S90 owner, I am teaching myself how to do everything that way, and never have to touch the touch screen.

    • @stevehammes

      Had a long talk with the national Volvo communications manager after this vid. He suggested much of what you are saying. Basically, if I were to spend more than a week with the vehicle I would begin to personalize these settings in a number of ways. So I'm getting a V90 next month and will dig deeper into this angle. Thanks.

      I appreciate your response, and will say THANK YOU for it. And, you are the only reviewer to even reply, when I noted the aspect of using the VOICE button on their review. I watched every video review of the S90 that I could find, including yours, and it helped me decide to buy one. This was despite the warts pointed out. I really like your style, presentation, and integrity.

    • @mattbelinski7760

      @@mattbelinski7760 I still have my '17 S90 T6 Inscription (Polestar enhanced), and I love it. I have about 33K miles on it. Beginning '18 and newer, the S90 was only available in the USA/Canada with the longer wheelbase (which I didn't want.) Actually, if the S60 had been modernized (like the 90 size), I would have got it, instead, in '17.

    Nothing mentioned about the fact all Volvo’s beginning around 2020 will be electric or hybrid. Also the lack of buttons you mentioned has to do with the fact that everything seems to be moving in the direction of voice control activation.

    I'm a huge fan of LED's on headlights. Volvo currently wins this game with its LED look.
    But, with cars now priced in the $60's with 4 cylinder power is just a huge NO-NO. Ask Cadillac how it's doing with its 4 cyl. CTS?? The $60K range is V6 territory mandatory.
    Volvo will sell every one they make. Glad Volvo is making gains. Now get back to sub $35K cars like another S40/20.

    • @1973TJM
      @1973TJM 7 лет назад +1

      The S90 competition, E-class, Audi 6, BMW 5 series, Jaguar, and others, all start with 4-cylinders. Sure, you can pay for more cylinders if you have the bucks. And, to equip those same w/similar safety options can run you even more money. If you have money to burn, go for them. Else, 325-HP in a 4-cylinder should be plenty. But, you can opt for the 400HP combined S90 T8 soon to hit our shores, if that is your fancy.

    When Volvo brings out the all-electric xc90 in 2022 the engine will be ridiculously quiet. This is one of the most distinctive looking cars on the road, controversial rear and everything. It's more distinctive and interesting than anything from the big German 3. Yet, you hardly ever see it. The XC90 is rather ubiquitous, so it can't be because of the sound of the engine. That's an upscale, luxo vehicle as well. So, why aren't more people buying it? It has a ton of room in it. What's the deal? The s60 isn't selling as well as I thought it should either. Whatever issues this car has the xc90 and xc60 have the same issues.
    It's interesting you said the car has a soft ride. I found it on the firm side for a car in this class.

    Great review! I test drove one this weekend, and I need to agree on the serious lag issue with the touch screen. Its much slower than my Land Rover, and that has a lag issue when inputting Navigation. Also, what turned me off is there is no choice of wood inlay. U basically get what they have assigned to the color of the interior you choose. Not even a brushed metal option for the black interior. Unfortunately I had to pass on this vehicle.

    Other than some tinny and annoying engine noises, and a grandma/grandpa steering wheel, it's a pretty sweet car. The minimalist interior is excellent. Hopefully the 2018 xc60 hybrid engine sounds a little better.

    had a 1980 Volvo 240 GL; simple, tough, unique, and the bees knees when you're 16...so, what happens in 3-4 years (or more) when Volvo doesn't provide updates to their infotainment system; then what? Will these "super" hi-tech controls render uber-luxury cars "worthless" in five years because their main control system is grossly out of date and can't be updated or swapped out for something better? What about replacements when something goes Tango-Uniform? Definitely is a nice place to be. I'll take the wagon (estate) version please. Thanks Steve. Cheers.

    Turbocharged, supercharged, electrified, nuclearfied, how much juice can they expect to get from these 4 bangers? But the smoothness that is associated with that class of car is just not there, no matter how much effort they put in motor mounts.

      Volvos are made in several countries just like Mercedes and Audi. Some Audi models are built in Mexico but the origins are still German. Just like Toyota a Japanese brand but most if not all of their cars are built in the US and Canada so if Volvo happens to have a factory in China that doesn't make it Chinese. I guess you will start calling them American since come late 2018 they will start building cars at their new South Carolina plant. Do your research before you start making comments about something you are obviously uneducated on.
