LaVell Edwards and team captains Ty Detmer, Matt Bellini and Alema Fitisemanu remember the BYU Cougars historic upset of No. 1 and defending national champion Miami.
I did offensive stats for ESPN that game. The pressure of keeping up with TY's and the team's passing and running numbers, and getting it recorded correctly for a national audience, was overwhelming. I was so focused that didn't realize how much of the game I didn't enjoy until I saw the highlights a couple of decades latter. Wow, what a game!
I remember watching this game. I’m a Miami fan and thought BYU didn’t have a snowball’s chance in Hell of beating us. Unfortunately, Ty Detmer was unstoppable that night. It was a well earned win by BYU.
I walked to the stadium that evening with a friend. We didn’t have tickets. Held two fingers in the air and soon we were in the stadium. Sat in the East bleachers, south end zone, about 4 rows up. I think every BYU touchdown was right in front of me. What an amazing game!
I was at this game. I’ve been to more BYU games than I can count. This was by far the greatest football experience of my life. I arrived a couple hours early went down to the campus bookstore. There was a large group of Miami alumni there, mostly made up of past Miami football players. They were holding up BYU gear and mocking it. One very large Dude ask me if I was a BYU fan. I told him I was. He asked if I thought BYU could beat Miami. I told him yes. They all but laughed me out of there. Ty was a stud, don’t know if you noticed in this video but his chin was bandaged. He took a hell of a hit. Had to get stitches. He wasn’t going to give up. So here I am decades later, basically an old man. I am sitting in my office waiting for the day to be over, in no where Utah. There is a knock at my door it swings open and there is standing Ty Detmer. He’s such a grounded man. Another great BYU experience for me. Thanks Ty.
That moment where Lavell goes crazy with Lee is one of my all time favorite BYU moments. One of the few times that Lavell couldn't contain himself and Ervin was having the time of his life. Must have been wonderful for him to make his stoic coach lose it.
I was living in the Salt Lake Valley at the time, and my in-laws were in town to visit from Florida. I was raised in Jacksonville, but went to BYU in the mid 70s. And I was a huge Cougar fan. I looked at Dad and said, “Let’s drive down and see if we get seats.” We were at the southwest gate and got two $17.50 for $100. Best money we ever spent. We were in the east bleachers half way up on the north 30 yard line. Best money we ever spent.
The Primary reason why Miami lost that game: They had a hard time getting used to the High Elevation [at first]. By the time they were starting to get used to it... it was a little too late for the comeback win. If that game were played anyplace else [that didn't have High elevation... of course], this little 'Special' lookback video, wouldn't exist... neither would Ty Detmer and the instant national fame he obtained as a result of the outcome of this game. Everyone loved him simply because, he beat Miami [in whom everyone hated, at that time].
Pardon me but you're full of it. Miami was down by only 7 with an entire fourth quarter to try to come back. They were outplayed by a team that was the better team on that day.

One of the greatest games I ever had the pleasure of watching. I’m a huge Ty Detmer fan.
Watched this game as a young boy. Miami was my team but respect to Ty Detmer and Matt Bellini them guys balled out I never forgot that.

Those are the best looking BYU jerseys I've ever seen. Appropriate for one of their biggest wins ever.
RIP COACH EDWARDS
Jeffery Rush Yeah he R.I.P

Detmer in the locker room by himself, geeezo, that's funny!

If you look at Ty, you can see he still bares a scar from that final hit on his chin.
Good game, worthy opponent, fun outcome :)
Excellent
Young Rock mentioned this.
Miami lost that game because they couldn't find any good cocaine in the Provo area and they we're depressed pre game LOL
QuentinDude why would you think that way??Poor loser or poor winner??
@ISP's Deodorant fuck you. Provo is one of the most racist places I've ever been. Fuck all you nutty ass Mormon pieces of shit.
@ISP's Deodorant no he's not you fucking idiot.
That sounds like an excuse! Stop capping and let Miami take that L like men.

@Randall Denison lol you're a fucking idiot. How did that game against Texas A&M go for your Salt Licking Cousin Lovers?
If that game was played 10 times, Miami wins 8 or 9. BYU got lucky. But they weren't so lucky against Texas A&M. Almost broke bitch ass Detmer in 1/2.
I love the Miami hurricanes
We lost to freaking byu smh
Randall Denison no they didn’t bud no Mormons beating nobody
@Randall Denison you Mormons must have some good dope
@Randall Denison what are you talking about 😳 ? I'm not even black. Whoa buddy. Have a drink
@Randall Denison so why did u make this so weird with the whole white team , black team ?
@@GlitchyMorpheus Well, you know how BYU feels about “those people”…
A great win over a pompous team!👍👌🙏🏈
The Y beats the U
Why are all of BYU’s best wins come from behind victories or Hail Mary type plays? Because they are not supposed to win.
Except this wasn't one of those wins.
Clearly you didn't even watch the Miami game.
Stupid comment, really.
