He probably alerted the horde with those bells to signal the ferryman to come pick us up. The horde also started on its own and Jean didnt really make much noise that alerts the dead
In tyrolean village we discover, zombies are not guide by normal sense, they could feel where are the humans somehow, the zombies where on way to notre dame to eat the remaining civilians and the soldiers, you hold them off so jean's mens could evacuate alomg the civilians and then help you with the cannons

Johnathan go infected and wrote one final note and shot himself All the soldiers in the map Tyrolean village knew from scouts the undead horde was coming so they decided to hide and wait out the horde but only one officer present knew that the cannibals wouldn't pass by and and only he knew In kaub by the basement there is a Bavaria soldier in a room which probably did his last stand there (Side note: idk if everyone knows this already but a person that looks like coder qwerty can be seen on a tall building by the spawn of Kaub)

My fellow lads are all gone, I’ve seen countless perish in this onslaught, the bloodthirsty cannibals ripped my comrades limb from limb. We tried to escape but the others finished evacuations before we could’ve caught up. Now a door stands between me and the undead. One thing I really like about guts and blackpowder is that there is actually a bunch of these scenarios that play out which makes you feel for even npcs. No one wanted this, it was war already but this is worse than war.
I really like the atmosphere of this game, it is complemented by such sad moments and you begin to understand how serious everything is in this universe...

But half of them was outside some off them couldn't make it to church And they was frozen to death with hope to get to the warm place INFRONT off battle of hungry cannibals they fought until they freezed They tried to build bridge and escape but they couldn't made it cannibals was everywhere...

the 17's and all you have is a flintlock that took 30 second to reload and only shoot once, narrow space, zombies trying to eat you and you need to survive all that while trying to open some place to continue surviving while your comrade dying...yeah...i will have PTSD on every sound i hear if i survive all that
