A number of us saw first-hand the differences in an outdoor embu in 2004 in a suburb of Philadelphia, PA, USA. A self-proclaimed expert used multiple rolled and soaked beach mats for tameshigiri. We could see almost no resistance using a shinken. We of the Nakamura Ryu and Mugai Ryu were using single and double rolled tatami omote. The audience could tell the difference between the two demonstrations. Beach mats are just not the real-deal. Even pool noodles give you better feedback although not much better. Good topic. Thank you.

Thank you my friend. I like pool noodles better than beach mats too. I find they flex rather than slice if your speed and alignment are not good.

I've used green willow dowel branches to test cut they work pretty well for me. Around 1 cm thick and tie real well a bunch and stake it.
I live in finland so can't get cheap bamboo sadly and it doesn't grow outside here it's too cold.

Very interesting, thank you for the advice. I might be able to find a nearby willow and try this out.

Good topic you picked, you can see immediately the difference between the two mats. I never tried cutting beach mats, only real tameshigiri mats.
But good job on the video bro 🙂👍

Thank you brother 🙏 I have been very busy and feel bad to have not put much out lately. Still working on editing a video now on a szabla which I purchased in person at Silkfencing.

Those dollar store mats are crap. I've never even tried a real tatami mat. I use pool noodles or rolled newspaper. I always dreamed of bribing some kid in Japan to go out and take peoples doormats while they're sleeping and send them to me. 😆 Where did you get your tatami mats? Are they expensive? Because paying 20$ for 5 mins of pleasure is expensive. Noodles cost me 100$ for 42 delivered to my door. Not that expensive. I wish I lived somewhere where bamboo grows. Soaked Oak dowels? Phalaris grass bundles? Endless possibilities . Buying a tatami mat making machine? 🤔 Cheers

After an endless search, I found a place that would send me some, but only a massive bulk amount. This was many years ago. They were expensive, so I sold many on ebay to get back some money and of course tried to use them sparingly. Only to test on video, not just to practice on. The pool noodles from kmart are my real go to as they are cheap and readily available.

Well if you dont live in siberia or the sahara desert and you have a yard or at least 4 sq meters of land you could grow your own. Bamboo grows really fast too just needs water and okay soil.

@@creeperFIN123 That's a good idea , but I live on the 4th floor of an apartment building. I might try it next year though , in some pots. Maybe even find a place near some train tracks where weeds grow. I live in Montreal Canada. Thanks.
