ive got a 7th gen celica gts with the greddy supercharger, another issue i found that can happen, with the extra pullies theres a tiny bit of play slide i had to get a small washer in there to prevent the play and it solve the issue.
I love this guy he really knows his celica and its a pleasure to watch him work as it is evident that he really enjoys his work. Wish he was my mechanic
Thank you. Most of the time I can firgure it out :)
💯 🔥 🏆 Wow, great show! I felt like I was watching an episode of a car show on TV, not watching a RUclips video. Very interesting find. I want to look at mine now. There was a lot of editing for this. Great job!
Thank you. It is rare for dampner to come apart, but the cars are getting older. Yes there was a bit :) of editing.
THANK YOU!!
I had this EXACT failure on my 01.
It first developed a typical sounding belt squeak but after swapping out the belt, no more squealing. I did notice however, that my belt was not aligned probably even when triple checking the alignment after it was tensioned. (it would jump one ridge towards the exterior after running the engine and spinning a few cycles).
At first thought maybe it was a bad tensioner or tensioner pulley... i did some digging on RUclips and stumbled upon your video showing the exact issue my Celica was having.. honestly, i would have never guessed it was the harmonic balancer breaking apart like that lol
You saved me a tremendous amount of time and headache with your invaluable information - thanks for all you do 🙂
Thanks for your comment. It's good to hear that it helped.
i have a same problem , thanks , now have a clue
hope you get it figured out
Mine was external bearing on water pump. Fine 1 minute then boom. Out of nowhere, the squel then went to a rat a tat tat.. stopped the car. Had it picked up, new water pump and belt later now all good 👌
Nice detective work
Wow. A real Celica expert. Hats off!
Mine only chirps when its been raining or when its very cold out for about 30 seconds. Ive sprayed water on the belt and the noise went away. Could this be condensation on the belt/pulleys or maybe a new tensioner needed? The belt is new so Im just baffled! 87k miles.
Thanks, definitely not an expert. But I do figure it out.
Ya it Could be the tensioner. Did you cycle it through (2:00 to 3:30) a full stroke a couple times when you had the belt off .
@@TSRGarage thanks for the reply. Yes, had no other noise or issues. Alignment is fine and the other pulleys are good. Just when it rains on a cold start itll chirp a bit... but not always. When its warm theres no issue. Summer days i wont hear a peep. Im assuming I have to lift the engine a bit to remove the bolts and replace the tensioner.
@@dieselsdilemma yes if you are replacing the arm.
Somtimes new belts are not good. Its rare but. I have put belts on before and had them start squeaking within a few days. Replaced with different brand squeak gone.
Once I was given a belt that was about an 3/4 inch longer than it was supposed to be. Fit but it squeaked often.
@@TSRGarage ive had a dayco belt and now a gates belt both 1938mm i believe. I know the US have a gatorbelt brand which we dont have here in rainy UK. If its not a danger, ill leave it. Its just so annoying! Thanks!
Try (metal polish) for headlight Glass, with Fiber cloth or .... no need to hard . it's amazing
Good troubleshooting work!
Thanks 👍
i have a 01 celica gts my balancer came apart completely $142 on rockauto but the fix was easy
Excellent 👍
I had the bar slip...and it didnt clear the valve cover by much...when it did slip my right hands fingers slid over some corroded ac lines, scalping the top skin clean from my middle and ring fingers...
After playing with the tensioner the sound went away but it returned late that night when it got under 20 degrees. I plan on replacing the assembly entirely...or having a shop do it, I dont feel like loosing anymore skin to this engine.
Ouch It hurt just reading this.....
truly great cars
Yes
Going through it with a 00 celica gts right now. Might end up doing a whole jasper engine swap because my head gasket rings are leaking, probably causing the squealing but it’s only when the engine is still warming up, soon as the temp reaches average no more squeaking 😭
Could be just a belt getting older ( or valve covere gasket/ chain tensioner seal/ or front main seal leaking getting oil on the belt..) aka normal operation lol ( old car problems) if it warms up and quiets down.
Or tensioner , travel might be sticky 2:00 in video.
I also have a video of my engine swap if you want to see how I changed my engine. 👍
good job
Thank you
I have the same car same problem I am outside right now looking doing exactly as you I think I am onto the harmonic balancer but can't tell mine is sticking out alittle past my finger nail any suggestions
The front pulley inner and outer ring (that the rubber rubber separates) should be even with each other, flush on the face.
Also (very hard to see) but the belt should appear perfectly straight. The misalignment of the belt was causing the squeak
Do you have a oil leak around the harmonic balancer because if you do after you put the harmonic balancer look around the cover for that engine. It could also mean you got to look at the seals on that front of the engine cover. Those seals usually cause that harmonic balancer to wear of when there is a oil leak conning out from the broken seals. Over time oil collects dirt rocks debri and corrosion that causes a disruption on the harmonic balancer.
No oil leak. Sometimes 20 year old parts get tired 👍
@@TSRGarage well yea that true but reason I ask because this 2zz are notorious for having this problem. They also have weak valves which is the reason I bought myself MWR Stainless valve. There oil pump is like an egg shell another weak point that usually goes bye bye they call it the Achilles heel. It happens when down shifting while trying to rev match or by reaching maximum rpm and then down shifting. Usually driver error that why they didn't do recall for there oil pump. I own the 2zzge and the 1zzge. Great engines but if you don't know what your doing you can have a horrible experience with the 2zzge.
Turn the key slowly, then start it slowly. The computer is overloading the alternator and making it spin to fast.
🤣🤣🤔 ya that will help
@@TSRGarage no really. Try it. We found out it is actually a real issue with small 4 bangers like Toyota Corolla, Matrix etc.
Mine squeaks right when I start on a cold start and goes away after about 4 minutes.Any thoughts of its a major or minor problem sir?
4 min is a long time for it to squeak. You should check it out. Could just be old belt or the tensioner. hard to say
Change the belt.
@@abel3619 that was the issue too!! Thanks
I can see my belt moving side to side slightly over the tensioner pulley any idea where to look and how to adjust it back to straight? I checked out the harmonic balancer and mine is coming apart
You say harmonic damper "is" coming apart? . If it is then it's the problem.
If it "is not" coming apart. Then my best guesses are.. The movment could be the belt itself. Worn or stretched. Or possibly tensioner alignment. Could be wear at tensioner pivot point or play in the pulley bearing. If the movement is very slight I wouldn't be to concerned......
hi when you take the belt in alternator do you need to loosen the bolt on tensioner pully before you full the pully down?
No. It will move. The only pressure on it is the tensioner spring cartridge.
@@TSRGaragethanks ive been watching a lot of video trying to find out if they were loosen the bolt of the tensioner even with i was looking hows the procedure....btw thanks a lot your a big help
How did you get the black plastic cover off at the beginning of the video?
Its held down with three or four plastic push pin clips.
@@TSRGarage Thank you very much. This may sound silly but what tool do I need to get those clips off. Ugh
@@edwardpriore9318 use anything to raise the center of the pin. There probably is a tool to do it.... but I usually use a small screwdriver or scribe. The center pin expands the clip when pressed in.
@@TSRGarage Perfect, I'll try screwdriver. Thank you!
Mine makes that noise but only when I turn on the A/C button.
The extra load from turning the ac compressor can cause the belt to slip a bit.
May be caused by old belt, oil on the belt or a weak tensioner. Cycling the tensioner (1:45 ) may help.
Hey how many miles was on that harmonic balancer
I don't know. The engine was swapped from another car.
