It is done by placing the chord and pressing the guitar with the other hand, moving the neck of the guitar a little.

AAK Music I think it's to hold the strings in place better especially when he is hitting the strings a lot
Correct. Very light gauge strings tend to buzz easier. I found it helps to put 2 capos.
