    So much work just for you, Passat vs Superb as you guys requested - and the Mazda6 to spice it up. Put it FULL HD and Fullscreen and enjoy :)

      Your efforts are much appreciated but why you make 1 hour and 43 minutes video without any real performance measuring? No acceleration tests, no drag races, no braking tests, no moose tests, no slalom test, etc. Grab a Performance Box and gather some useful information for your subscribers. Most of the info you offer on your videos can be easily found in the car's owner manuals!

      Dont you think its kinda unfair to test SuperB at LaK which means the highest trim level and mazda and passat are just regular ones ?

  • @CAR_NL
    @CAR_NL 8 лет назад +10

    When the SuperB was launched I was really impressed with the design. But after seeing in on the roads it really disappointes. The back of the car is so anonymous and boring.
    The Mazda looks it was drawn with some fun. The Passat looks like a... Passat. On the interior, the Mazda shows again the most positive energy in my eyes. lovely combination of colors and a clear separation between the climate and multi media. Also not a thief interesting product like in the Passat and Superb.
    I think you can't pick a winner out of this three. It is about what you preferences are. SuperB is the winner on space, the Passat on being a Passat and the Mazda on the design aspect.
    The fact is that the cars are on the same level.

    First of all, a huge thanks for this very compete comparative of these three cars, you did a very job as usual. :-)
    My favorite one is the new Skoda Superb especially in L&K and Combi version for the following reasons :
    - Design !
    - Space inside
    - Massive trunk (don't need to play Tetris to go on holiday with kids ! :-))
    - Easy loading access
    - Global quality of the car (almost equal to the Passat and Audi)
    - Cheaper than a Passat for the same trim level (especially via leasing as it's the case for me). Audi is out of the game at that level and Mazda is not accessible in my car selection.
    - In the L&K, you get the full equipment for the best price and if you want to start with the Style trim level, it will quickly be almost equal to the L&K in price but with less equipment.
    In my opinion, the only drawbacks are :
    - Less fun in the Skoda than the Passat or Audi (A4 and A6)
    - Impossible to select sport seats (maybe in the future ?)

      "play tetris" haha love it. Same here. 3 kids I struggle with my old BMW 530D estate and a top box for trips to Croatia. Looking at one of these since BMW are asking way too much in the 2nd hand market (2-3 years old) i think they do a 280hp version but i am suspecting i will miss the stiffness in the BMW for holding the road.

  • @BO2Letsplay
    @BO2Letsplay 8 лет назад +6

    The Skoda really has had a facelift, especially on the rear. I also like its interior but I have to say that I love the Mazda's inside loads as it reminds me very much of the BMW interior.

  • @Mixyap
    @Mixyap 8 лет назад +22

    When I add all those extra features that Mazda6 has on other 2 cars, Skoda's price goes up to 6-7.000 Euro and on Passat around 10.000 euro. I would go for Mazda with all extra features as it's cheaper and there is no such a HUGE difference in case of space and quality. a few centimeters for the space and 1-2 Db on noise are worth to save over 7000 euro. I have tested all of 3 cars just a few weeks ago and like Thomas said, there is something different that you can't describe on Mazda cars. I have seen lots of Passat in traffic and it's kinda boring and felt like I was driving nothing new after 15 mins of test drive. Skoda was impressive with it's size and comfort but it has same interior with Passat and it was boring too. When I jumped in Mazda6 and started the engine it gave me a different feeling. I am not sure how to explain it but the sound of engine, seats and steering wheel became one. I felt like Mazda6 was hugging me and telling me that it belongs to me. Go for Mazda6 over Skoda and Passat. You will experience a different kind of ride that you can't describe but you will definitely feel... I test drove Passat for 15 mins and bored. 12 minutes on skoda and bored. It toke me over 30 minutes to leave Mazda 6 back. Thomas would understand what I mean... It's just different...

      +Mixyap Online Müzik Akademisi The Mazda is like BMW when compared to Mercedes and Audi, there is just something in the way it drives and its dynamics. A person who enjoys to drive will buy the Mazda out of these 3 (and the Mazda doesnt lie and give you lung disease).

    No question I would pick the Mazda 6. Looks fantastic and as always a great drive with very sharp chassis dynamics, that the other two cannot match. In addition excellent fit and finish, and a proven reputation for reliability. Naturally it would never win this test up against two VW group cars on a German you tube channel...but for me it's the winner.

    • @AY-dw4om
      @AY-dw4om 8 лет назад +4

      I think the mazda 6 looks beautiful to youngers. the more you are grown up, like 41 years old as I am, the mazda looks like a carton spiderman design. appealing to the un developed eye regarding design appeal. an immature car that was intentionally made for 18-28 year old buyers. they want it fully red, fully sugar, strong everything. the more mature person looks into design in more depth, looks on proportions, look on taste, look on curves and lines. in that respect, the German and Czech desing of the skoda, are master peaces. the mazda is a childly made for chlidly minded customer. its design is "screaming" all over the place, instead of being classic and strong for years to come.

    • @pavel5515
      @pavel5515 7 лет назад +6

      You summarized it nicely: old people are less fun and like ugly things. True that. Mazda is by far the most beautiful car here, both exterior and interior.

    • @melluzi
      @melluzi 6 лет назад +3

      I'm 47 and my next car is Mazda 6. When you get older, you care more about quality and realiability which has been for a long time an issue for VAG group. Having a long trips across the continent you don't want your DSG or DPF to fail. In Mazda, you can be sure you'll come home with no issues.
      In addition, horizontal lines in interior or extra rear legroom is nice - in those extremely rare occasions, when you focus on it or accidentally have full car of very tall passengers, however, perfect handling is something you need on every turn and this is something where Mazda is by far the best from these three.

    • @martinfiala4038
      @martinfiala4038 6 лет назад

      @@pavel5515 I don't like the design at al. It really looks like full of teenager bulshit, cheap tricks or what other words have you. I liked previous Mazda 6 design better than current ... Mazda can have the best engine (VW other brands have it too, there is some hierarchy ...) and fun factor for driver who wants to enjoy that but generally all Japanese cars feel like made of paper so you might not appreciate that thing after long time. What I have about the Concern is that stupid DSG - it combines everything bad from manual and automatic transmission into one. It is still mechanical but robotized clutch which I really hated from my AUDI A5 s-line, 7gear. NEVER again in a new car! I don't believe Mazda is much better in this

    Thank you Thomas for an excellent review. I also viewed your single review of the Skoda. I've been selecting between the Skoda and the Mazda and chosen Skoda. 206kw, 4wd, turbo petrol, in Style trim (with Leather) seems very similar to L&K in this market. It has the adaptive suspension etc. In New Zealand BTW the Japanese manufacturers tune their suspensions in a mild 'sport' tune (e.g. compared with USA). This trend started years ago (80's?) when Toyota asked Chris Amon (ex-Ferrari F1) to set-up their NZ market cars. Now I suspect we share with the Australian market. Here, the Mazda is a little bit of a 'drivers' car (but not like BMW). All that said, it's the Superb for me - I like turbo torque, the adjustable modes, the size in the rear, the additional comfort features and the style.

    I've owned Mazda's in the past and they were nice enough cars, but the designs were too fussy and cramped (I'm 191cm) and the quality wasn't up to VW groups standard. After recently having a mark 5 golf and then a Superb 2012 since new, I'd go for the Superb every time. Brilliant car, roomy, mini luxury car, quality, reliability at an affordable price. I also love the more logical control layout of the VW group. So Skoda Superb for me and I'll buy another one next year.

    what a detailed review,
    i am in the market for a car in this section, and ended up with those 3 cars, the new talisman actually came in as a strong competitor, but i did not like driving it, great value though
    those are all good cars, no doubt about it, and all have there strong points,
    the passat is a great car, it looks refined, drives great, and has a somewhat respectable appearance inside out, for me the passats main fault is really the superb, those cars share DNA and you feel it, they drive alike, its really a question of what car you think looks nicer,
    the superb for me is the clear winner, like the passar it rides like a car in a class above it, they are soft, quiet and feel solid, but in the superb you get that insane rear seat space, its S class alike, and the boot on the sedan is so usable because of the hatch,
    compared to the other two the mazda 6 rides like a japanese car, if you have any experiance with cars you know what i mean, its stiffer, you feel more vibration through the chassis, its not as insolated, but it also feels lighter than the other two, its responses are quick, the interior is better than you expect from a middle class japanese car,
    if it was this simple its a no brainer, the superb hands down, but its never that easy is it?
    over where i am shopping for those cars, those cars stretch from 35k ish euros to over 55, and i am somwhere in the middle of it, i want a wagon, for my budged i can only get a 1.4l petrol passat, so thats out,
    i can get a 1.6l tdi combi superb in a ambition trim level, , and a 2.2l diesel mazda in vision trim level, the the dealership offered me a optimum one with a 175hp engine and awd,
    both the 150hp and 175hp versions of the mazda6 feel really strong compared to what i can get for the price from the vw group, i felt like the 150hp mazda felt every bit as strong as the 190hp 2.0l tdi superb, and the 175hp one felt stronger, and compined with nimble feeling in the chassis this car felt involving to drive,
    but the vw group car feel solid like few other, nothing in there class, my choice would be the 4wd 2.0l tdi superb, but thats over my budged,

    Let's be honest, the Mazda 6 lost the comparison before it even started. I'm a big fan of this page but the bias is very evident. Beauty is to the viewer, but its astonishing how anyone can find the Skoda more attractive than the Mazda. Both the Superb and Volkswagen have boring and safe designs. Superb has weird proportions, specially moving to the rear. Somehow, the negatives of Mazda are very emphasised but the positives are very less talked about. And the opposite can be said about the other two. The Mazda has best in class interior and exterior design, driving dynamics and sheer enjoyability from driving. Definitely needs a lot more recognition.

      lets not also forget japanese cars are much more reliable too.

    • @titoyolo240
      @titoyolo240 6 лет назад +2

      I think the tricky bit here is those 2 have higher class interior than BMW as well, not just Mazda. And in terms of fuel Mazda (engine maturity) is totally out of the comparison, that's what real life experience says. 3:56 that is the difference between the 3. American, Japanese and Korean cars users usually does not care about all these fittings, you have no idea what "luxury" is if that qualifies as a pass. There is no argument, Mazda has the "worst" interior here.
      Another point which simply defines what "class" is are the doors, Japanese cars have the worst door quality, and they still haven't changed yet. 55:30, that hollow sound is shocking. Go pull the handle of a VW, Skoda, BMW, Mercs, Audi, just hear the sound and how the door is characterful and encourages you to pull it out, you have no idea about all these, you're not at that level yet. Hence, I'm switching my Mazda to a Mercs soon

    Thanks, as always, for the review. Of the vehicles tested, only the Mazda6 is available in the U.S. market. Thomas mentions the U.S. market Passat at 42:19, but the U.S. Passat is an entirely different cost-reduced model based on the dated B6 platform. I find it wryly amusing that the Mazda6 suspension was considered the softest; in the U.S. market, it is generally considered one of the most firm for that vehicle class. Despite this, I think the European and U.S. tastes for suspension are (fortunately) converging. I would choose the Mazda6 for its styling and reliable normally aspirated engine, but would envy the added NVH refinement of the B8 platform. The wagon/estate/kombi Mazda6 would be my favorite pick for both styling and utility; alas, that is also not available in the U.S. :(

    Hi Thomas,
    really good review, thanks for your work you have done with your team.
    I would also choose the Skoda Superb as my favorite, even if the Passat is in some points better. But the design and the space is really "Superb" . I had the Superb 2 as a Combi, it was a nice car but not very comfortable (sound isolation) and i decided end of 2013 to take a Audi A4 Avant as a company car. It seems that the Superb 3 is much better in matter of sound isolation as the old one. As you also made a review of the A4 Avant could you compare the Sound isolation of the both cars? Is the Audi still much better or only a little better as the Superb3?
    With best greetings from Austria

    You seemed over critical of the mazdas centre console fit, by shaking it. I think it would've Been more constructive if you would've have done the same test on each car. I make these comments as I am currently looking for a new car, and recently test drove the Mazda 6, along with the Infiniti Q50, and the build quality/fit&finish was one of the things that really impressed me. • @stamy74

    One of the most detailed comparisons i have ever seen. Congratulations!
    Now speaking about those 3 cars, my choice would be Skoda. It looks better and sexier not only compared to Passat and Mazda 6 (although I find Mazda exterior design also very appealing), but also in comparison to some premium rivals like Audi A6 and Mercedes E-Class (especially the estate version of the latter which looks a bit awkward). I have recently seen in a garage next to each other the new Superb and the latest Audi A6, and the Audi looked a bit dull in comparison!! (although it certainly has way more interesting interior design)
    Passat is a bit better in the interior, due to the more interesting layout. I would prefer Skoda in the L&K trim, with brown leather and patches of aluminium inside. Mazda interior has the sportier layout, but lacks the premium feeling of the other 2.
    I haven't driven any of those, but the conclusion out of the several videos on RUclips is the same like yours. Passat is sportier and more agile, Superb is more comfortable and in the comfort mode is even more cosseting than a Mercedes E-Class! (they were both tested in Autocar) and Mazda is somewhere in the middle, a bit closer to the Passat.
    Another interesting aspect that has been mentioned in other youtube videos, is that Skoda has better suspension setup in the 4WD models than with the front wheel ones.
    If I was buying any of those would be with diesel powered engine, due to lower consumption. My choice would be Skoda in L&K trim, 4WD and with 190Bhp. Yes it actually becomes a bit expensive (around 40K Euros) and depreciation will be also higher, but I really believe it worths every penny.
    Passat is even more expensive in the top trim and for the other premium rivals you have to add at least 10K for equivalent trim levels.

    Obviously the M6 is the best car here. Skoda is nice and roomy but so are the other two. If you want to start a moving company just buy a van/truck :D And seriously, how many times do you actually use those few extra liters? If you like some fun while driving you're best off with the Mazda + it looks the best of these three (imho). Besides that it comes fully loaded for very competitive price. The design of the Superb is fast improvement over the outgoing model but it is very soft (suspension) and the interior is kinda boring. Same goes for the Passat. Ah well, to each his own as they say.

    I considered the Skoda Superb Combi and the VW Passat Variant when I made my last buy decision (october 2015). Both cars are very affordable and complete for family requirements. They are the best in this segment - no competitors can offer the same combination of space, performance, technology (efficient automatic transmission, powerful dieselengine, all wheel drive, LED headlights, Apple CarPlay, DCC etc.), comfort and style in this price range. It was quite a hard choice for me between the Superb Combi (Style) and the Passat Variant (GT/Highline) but at the end the ErgoComfort seat in Passat is superior to the seat in Superb. I sit way better in the Passat compared to the Superb. Also, I found the Passat a little little bit sharper in the way it moves and feels. You should also consider the fact that Passat offers some options that are not available for the Superb, like the LED headlights. I chose the LED High with even greater brightness than the standard LED headlights. I found the Passat Variant trunk slitghtly more useful than that of the Superb Combi because of the inclination of the rear window in Superb. In Sweden - the price difference between Passat and Superb is minimal. You really have to view in detail to see what you get. The Passat in GT level (2,0 TDI 190, DSG, optional 4Motion) has a price that is very pressed down. In Sweden - the Mazda 6 sedan is totally uninteresting and the stationwagon barley exists. For obvious reasons. (see my description here). I really appreciate this comparison that you have done!

I've done 12,000km with it and I could not be mor happy. The best choice in the segment ( in technology, interior, usability,...) It's a very balanced car in every respect

    Thanks for that review. Different to german tests from IME sponsored "neutral" testers this one is quite detailed and useful. I test drove all of those 3 cars, and I want to mention, that driving experice also is quite subjective thing. Opposite to lot of other people I drove french, japanese and german cars. And for my personal driving pleasure I absolutely prefer japanese cars. Same with Mazda - driving doesn't give you that push forward, if you floor the pedal as the german engines does - it's a more calm ride (even if good acceleration also is absolutely possible). Also it might be, that "interior quality" isn't completely up to what you expect german manufactures, at least if equipped with those overprized extras. But the mazda offers quite good consumption figures (most likely not "optimized" as obviously many of the "premium makers" did), a quite involving and fun driving experience, and with better packages a super good Bose sound system which eats those VW audiosystems, adaptive LED headlights, which is unusual in this (price) class at all and an very attractive look of the car itself. Also as 4 wheel car quite satisfying - better than all those BMW xdrive (I actually drive such one), Mercedes AWD. It goes near to Audi or Subaru AWD - even if it's a non permanent one - real fun to drive. My personal recommendatioen (especially to german drivers which for some reason drive german cars as a nobrainer without testing alternatives) - test drive one. If you're not heading for regularly reaching the cars limiter on the Autobahn a like to oush cars in front of you on the autobahn with 2m distance, this might be a really satisfying alternative for you. Pricingwise the Mazda can be up to a third cheaper fully equipped as a medium equipped german one ;o). I throw my BMW away and Mazda 6 with Revolution package is the choosen successor.

    You forgot to mention that the 6 is also much lighter than the other two, even with 2,5 liter displacement. Especially compared to the Superb which is a whopping 115kg heavier. This propably explains the result of your door test and the center console which are both a lot less heavy. The Superb is a nice car but the interior is kind of boring, a bit like a grandpa's living room. And the Mazda has longer seats in the back and more shoulder room. Also, it is the least expensive, the Superb in L&K trim is much much more costly.

Volkswagen really need to step up the game and become more brave. Look at Mercedes and Volvo for instance, they have made really big changes to their interiors lately, Volkswagen looks about the same they did several years ago. They could really benefit from new, brave and fresh thinking. My pick:

    Another great review, but I personally prefer the Passat, it's sportier, the resale values will be better and if you chose the 1.8 gasoline engine it can be cheaper than a similar spec Superb or the Mazda as VW offers great EasyDrive offers. I test drove the 190 diesel Superb with 190 HP dsg but it felt really slow and the comfort mode almost made the passengers sick, you feel like you're in a boat and the car keeps swaying around. The stability at high speeds even in Sport mode is also inferior to both Passat and the Mazda 6, which both pass more confidence due to the sportier suspension. I guess that with the 220hp engine things get different, but perhaps would have been better for you guys to test the cars with similar power, to see how that power is delivered and how fast the cars feel having similar specs.

    Thanks for this great an interesting comparison. You did such a good job discussing all aspects, but still I can not pick a winner.
    In the right color combinations, I think all three cars look good. Based on your description, I think the Passat is closest to my personal preference as far as the driving is concerned. But the Skoda is less expensive, and the Mazda even below that (at least here in the Netherlands). Plus as you mentioned Mazda has a good reliability record, and lack of a turbo and a more conventional automatic gearbox may prove to be an advantage in the long run in that regard too.
    I guess I could only make a choice after driving all three of them myself. Plus you can then also take other things into consideration, like any discounts you may be able to get and (if applicable) trade in price for your 'old' car..
    All in all I am really glad I do not have to make a choice right now, I would have sleepless nights! :-)

    To driving, maybe the passat

    Excellent review yet again, the best car review channel on the net hands down. I love the independent Mazda engineering but ultimately head has to lead heart when one needs a car to work hard and VW do an excellent job on the balance. Let's just say the Passat was designed and sold by Mazda? You'd rush out to buy it.

    3 are good. Mazda is attractive for design, Passat for luxury and power, Superb is right in between. So by the average, superb wins no doubt

    Thanks for putting in all that time! That was a fantastic, comprehensive review. Im in love with the Mazda6. It stands out from a mile away whereas the VW Group cars all look generic.

    Thomas thank you for really pedantic detailed review :))) and for that people love it! Thank you for choosing cloth interior in passat! Really like it! But i don't like that dashboard digital screen in VW. The best one is in Skoda!!! It really seems like some watch dials from german manufacturers (Sinn 556 I, Damasko DA36, Stowa Flieger TO2...). Love it! By the way the best dashboard for me is one from Bavarian 3 series)) of those 3 I choose a Mazda (but with cloth seats and 6 speed manual). Love atmospheric engines and it has great exterior design!

      +Vitalii Gladun thanks Vitalii! The digital one on the Passat is of course optional, you can go with that classic analogue one.

    Incredible amount of work done here. Thank you. Awesome content quality!
    Does anyone think that Mazda 6 looks kinda bulky? Also, the exterior is a lot like Jaguar? Or is it just me?
    P. S. While everyone make ugly hatchback-like sedans with very short trunk lids these days, Skoda makes a "hatchback" that looks like a real sedan. Love the Skoda liftback design :)

    Thank you for the detailed comparison. I care a lot about available space inside since I am 2m tall, and I want passengers in the back to have some knee room. Mazda is not for me, but looks nice.
    Also, if I may suggest, when comparing cars you should try to compare trim levels of comparable price, so you can also see value for money with each car.
    One other point: you spend too much time explaining the design. At the end, no matter what you say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
    Out of these three I have to say I like the Passat the best, although I would go with Highline trim and those nice alcantara seats.

      New Mazda 6 is good, but I went for Passat because of practicality and small dimensions and refinement.

    Great review, I've got a month ago 2017 l&k, 2.0t 280bhp and for me it us absolutely spectacular. In my opinion its just the all car for all needs. On the sensible front: very spacious, safe, quite good fuel economy if driven appropriately, easy to drive and does not feel like a huge car and draws no attention. On the fun part: the engine is just a tower of power, the 6 speed dsg is spectacular, the sport mode makes sense, the punch off the line with the 4x4 is astonishing and so is the grip.
    If mazda 6 or even 3 had a properly powerful model for Israeli market with a 4x4 i would go for it, since there are no such models available the superb is just a match made in heaven for me
