i think the greatest point of this whole thing is how maceo is able to mine little nuggets of gold out of very few notes by exploring rythmic variations. like he said you dont always have to play a solo up and down the entire range of the horn. great lesson
Hey Jamie, thank you so much for doing this. I love everything you do. My Sunday morning email is like being called to Prayers🙏. Jazz legend shoot outs are great to have an insight in to, but this particular lesson is so accessible to beginners and advanced players., No matter what level you are , you can get something great from this. I have a soft spot for this kind of funk with someone giving me a couple of Junior Walker albums when I first got a sax in 79. Life got in the way and after a few years, I put it away for 35 years 😔 Got back in to it a few years ago and I have made rapid progress. Now playing in a Springsteen cover band. Anyway. What I really want to say is that back in 79, there was no internet, really difficult to get sheets and books…and totally unaffordable if you were a teen. If only I had a Jamie Anderson back then…..But Jamie, this gift that is you, is accessible to every teen that dreams of being a sax player today. A lot of saxes are definitely not going back in the case thanks to you. You are without doubt the best on the net. Your enthusiasm is what makes you stand out from the rest. Music should be fun. And you rock the fun. Thanks again Jamie.

Cold Sweat! What a groove! Maceo Parker-- king of funky sax! 1967 is the year I started playing sax! -- but I didn't become aware that Maceo was James Brown's sax player, or how awesome he was/is 'til (after a 25 year break) & I learned that he was a mentor for Candy Dulfer. When I first started playing sax I was listening to: John Coltrane, Archie Shepp, Charles Lloyd, Pharoah Sanders, Ornette Coleman, Sonny Rollins, Wayne Shorter, Joe Henderson, Cannonball Adderley, Eric Dolphy, Yusef Lateef, some local Detroit and Chicago sax players (like Joseph Jarmen) and the only funk saxophonist I was aware of was Junior Walker. I had an incredible vinyl collection (which someone stole in 1970.) When I re-started playing sax, the internet had come into being and everything was available! And now we even have your incredible on-line sax lessons. Thanks Jamie!
I have spent hours doing this for many years with Maceo. I have played harmonica for 46 years (was full-time player at age 20 but not now) I am not NEARLY as fast as you are though! I always have this with horn players in studio sessions, they can get their parts much faster than me. I had a swing dance, R&B, Jazz & Blues band for 10 years and worked with many horn players. We had a female vocalist to cover cool material but we could hold an audience on a 3 hour gig doing all instrumentals. I adapted a bunch of Dave Koz, David Sanborn, Maceo tunes & grooves that we could jam on in addition to Jazz Standards and then for swing course those were more arrangements.....just for lines, solos still improvised. With Maceo I do as you suggest, try to pick up on some of his licks and phrases, work to get a feel for the timing and phrasing and then HOPE, HOPE, HOPE some of it may naturally integrate and come out though my own playing, without thinking about it. Thank you for these videos, love your playing and I am on the mailing list.
@@GetYourSaxTogether I have only a couple samples posted on RUclips but if you click on my channel the first one up is an original song called Latin Moon. My solo is not till 5 minutes and 30 seconds in since this was an outdoor concert but the guy playing sax on that had one of those nice vintage 1940s selmer (Mark V or VI?) like all of the swing people used. Keep up the good work!
JAMIE I am learning so much from you it's crazy and this is right up my alley as I grew up on Maceo Parker and James Brown. God bless you for this 1 my man.
Thanks so much for this Jamie. Your showing super skills here! Fantastic challenge for us. I'm one of the fortunate who enjoyed Maceo live with Fred Wesley and Peewee Ellis in a small venue in San Francisco. One of the ultimate pleasures of my life.
Absolutely crushing it as usual Jamie! This style of playing is what made me first want to pick up a sax over 3 decades ago. It never gets old does it?
Jamie you are amazing and this was a whole lot of fun watching this video w you teaching us this funky method! Thanks for this segment and I was really glad the choices of songs you picked to dive into. :)
Wow excellent choices! The first two that come to mind are "Mother Popcorn" and "Soul Power". If you're talking funky sax, there's gotta be some props for "Soul Vaccination", "Oakland Stroke" and "Squib Cakes" from Lenny Picket. As the urban legend goes, James Brown originally wanted Maceo's brother, who played drums. He said no unless Maceo came with him. It's safe to assume growing up with a drummer influenced his rhythmic sound.
If you want to do this kind of exercise with funk blues sax recordings but at a slightly more easy level, check out most any recordings by A.C. Reed. He sings and plays sax on dozens of original funky blues tunes. His sax licks and solos sound real good but are relatively simple and easy pentatonic blues scale notes in their entirety. You can follow along, echo him and fill in using similar note - rhythm devices as he uses without much difficulty. i.e. do what Jamie did here. This is a good option for beginner-intermediate level players who may find Maceo a bit challenging at first.
Thank you for that wonderful lesson, that is just what I needed today, I've probably been driving the neighbours mad with the same old stuff but that should have got them funked up with something new, much appreciated
OMG!! This is the coolest lesson I've seen and it is right up my alley as far as what I love about the Sax. Is there any way you could make a short video of how you stand or what moves you make with your body when you play or solo? I'm talking about performance moves that all sax players should know (and practice). Really a video not so much about playing but how to look awesome while you are playing so people would feel like you are really getting into it. Big attitude. Think rockstar moves or classic stage moves or body positions that make you stand out as a performer. Moves that look great but don't affect the quality of your playing that much. Easy things to try. In your video with your family playing the sax you told them that "no sway = no pay" or something like that. What do you mean and how do you do that?!??
Whoa! love me some Maceo!! People think it's simple, but if they don't have the rhythm, then they are stumped!!! Funky Drummer was a new one for me, but there are (I think still there) a couple of videos with the full James Brown Funky Instrumentals albums to play along with on the Tube. Also, when you talked about building the solo, a great one for that is the wonderful Eddie Harris Funk Project, doing Listen Here. Love anything by him too. Bring on the 70's!! LOL

Thank you. I've been working on Maceo solos for a while. So glad you're doing this on tenor. I love your energy and enthusiasm! One thing I'd like to hear you address more in depth is his articulation and tone. You have a natural ability to mimic. What could you suggest I do to get the clarity and the bends at the front of the notes?
Thanks so much Jamie! I really appreciate your level of expertise and commitment to post these great vids whether you're having tech issues on the production side of things or not. Cheers!
