  • Welcome to our review of the OG Flyer by Al Merrick / Channel Islands Surfboards.
I have had an OG Flyer for the best part of six months and have had the chance to ride the surf board in a vast variety of conditions, from pumping 5-6 foot beach-break barrels, to 1 foot onshore slop, and the OG Flyer has held its own in most conditions. I have had a few Flyer F's and New Flyer's in the past, so I was really keen to check out the OG Flyer, a shape that had somehow not come to my attention earlier...
My OG Flyer here is the stock 5’10 which is 19 ¼ x 2 7/16 at 29.4 litres of volume. Initially this felt a little under volume for myself when I first put it under my arm, but once I got it in the water it felt just perfect with just the right volume that the board paddled well and linked flat sections with ease.
The volume in the OG Flyer is well distributed throughout the board which translates to the way the board surfs, very smooth and very easy. It’s a bit of a shock to think how much board design has changed even in the last 10 years, but this design here is 19 years old, but looks as modern and current as anything currently coming out of most board manufacturers. 10 years ago I was riding a 6'2 shortboard - Oh OG Flyer, where have you been all my life!
The OG Flyer is a super versatile daily driver which I would recommend for someone looking for a one board quiver.
    From the www.cisurfboards.com site:
Our all-time most popular design is The Flyer.
In 1999 Al was searching for a solution to team riders’ dilemma of needing more speed and flow in lesser waves while maintaining high performance, world tour level surfing.
The answer was a board that departed from the then overly narrow designs and set the stage for the modern performance shortboard that is now wider and shorter.
The Flyer is easily the most ridden and enjoyed all around board in our history.
Best as an everyday board in everyday conditions, The Flyer has a single concave entry to double through the middle and a vee exit, Al’s signature bump squash, slight down rail, and a subtle nose beak. To be ridden approximately the same length as you are tall.

With the OG flyer in my opinion the best thin is the old school Kelly Slater Thruster setup 2.1 in carbon fiber. When you pair those Fins Up with the original flyer it's the kind of board that makes you comfortable in any conditions from ankle high two head and a half hucking barrels. I'm glad you liked it too and if you look at the a.m. fins they're very similar to the old KS fin the middle third fin is a tad smaller then your rail fins I think that's what does it.

@@JHBoatie I'm pretty sure the fever is made for a bit bigger waves and more high performance surfing due to its thinner rails and longer outline. The og flyer was originally made to be more of a performance groveler while the fever is more of a standard performance shortboard.

Hey man .. I'm looking for a daily driver. I have only surfed for 2years and can only do some pumps and small carves. I never had a small board like this (been surfing on a Pyzel Gremlin 6"6) , the guy at my local shop told me to consider the OG Flyer or the Lost Uber Driver. Are these boards user friendly and fun to ride? I weight 85kg and 1,86m tall.. was aiming for a 6"1 around 34LT

    • @TheSurfboardGuide
      @TheSurfboardGuide  2 года назад

Hey mate! Yes this is user friendly and easy to surf, but the 6'6 Gremlin would have a lot of foam and surface area i think? And would be a bit of a jump to this...
Make sure you don't go to small or thin, otherwise you aren't going to be getting waves and having a good time!

    • @TheSurfboardGuide

Very similar type of board and prefer similar wave types/conditions. The Happy Everyday design and outline is a little more modern and forgiving, and probably easier to surf for a wider range of surfers, including beginner-intermediates.

Hey mate! Sorry for the delay.
OG seems to have more flip out of the nose, where the Monstabox is a more gentle and staged rocker.

I ride a custom 5 8" custom OG pod 29L pretty regularly. I have been stuck on finding a good slight step up from that would work a little better in slightly bigger waves, something between the OG pod and my SP12 step up. I was thinking of ordering a custom 5 10" 28.6L Og Flyer swallow tail as that board. What do you think? I am open to a different board as well (Channel Islands) just trying to figure it out and don't want to keep going through boards to have to figure it out. Thanks in advance
