I blame Brandon Mull for my obsession with fantasy; growing up, I loved the Fablehaven books, and Beyonders is still one of my favorites. Now I'm equally obsessed with Brandon Sanderson's fantasy books, and I'm pretty sure if I'd never read Mull, I'd never have read Sanderson either!

Speaking of the Iliad and the Odyssey, those epics were just two parts of what is now called the Epic Cycle, a long collection of such stories. We know the names of many of these other epics and even a few quotes from them, but that's all.

Brandon mull got me into reading and fantasy.... Sanderson has taken me to higher places.

One of the biggest tragedies is the adaptation rights for _Fablehaven_ wallowing in production hell. It's a series that can be adapted so well.
Or it could end up like WoT… Careful what we wish for.

@@comradecameron3726 The WoT adaptation was *_way_* worse than how they adapted Eragon. I admit I haven't yet read it (or any of the Eragon books) but the movie didn't seem too bad compared to the drivel we've been getting over the last 4-5 years that should have been great but wasn't. (I'm pointing at you WoT, Star Wars).

The Colossus reminds me of how the Argonath are one of those super awesome things in Middle Earth. These silent witnesses of a time that is long gone. They make you wonder what immensely powerful people once lived there and what they were capable of.
A tale of two Brandons!
I think there's strong reason to believe that the Iliad and the Odyssey were "special." Of course there were many other works, but things like terra cotta paintings are solid archeological evidence of the cultural importance placed on those stories in particular. Also, later Roman work like the Aeneid was deeply built around the Iliad and the Odyssey, on such a scale as to suggest its especial importance. It's also not entirely coincidence that they survived; they survived because there were many copies of them, I think. Also, there are a plethora of ancient works that we know we don't have, because they were referenced in works we do have, which further allows us to gauge the relative cultural importance of these stories.

Brandon Mull was so huge for me getting into reading. I used to stay up nights reading with a flashlight in bed in secret cause I had to know what happened in Fablehaven. I never knew about Dragon Watch though! Gotta reread Fablehaven know and then finish the series

Brandon, if you like giant statues, you have to go to Mongolia. Just outside the capital of Ulaanbaatar, there is a 131-foot tall statue of Genghis Khan on a horse. I’ve been there, it’s incredible.
You can go up on top of it as well.
Civilization was one of my favorite games as a kid, could play that thing forever.

Brandon Mull married my sister and he’s one of the best guys I know. Once I was talking with him at a table in public. We kept on getting interrupted by fans. It didn’t bother me but I asked him if it bothered him. He said he views his fans as his own family so being interrupted never bothers him.

the Voynich Manuscript is actually fascinating
The things that survive are the things people copy, so they are probably some of the best literature there was back in the day. Though i always wanted to read agrippina memoir that was lost.
Also not all groups were that into writing, for example the greeks were really into writing history, there are other rich cultures like the persians and some part of ancient India where the the sources are mostly greek a lot of the times.

23:49 - Those seem creepy, but often what they're actually detecting is normal fluctuations in earth's magnetic field, brought on by anything from large metal objects nearby, to mineral deposits. They can also be set off by scuffing your shoes or just waving the thing around faster than normal.
Also, "To be absent from the body is to be present with the lord", and "it is appointed unto man once to die, and after that, the judgement."- the actual reasons I don't believe in ghosts.
nowadays it's mostly accepted that the lost colony was actually just "wow, it's hard to live here, but those people over there know what they're doing, we're gonna go live with them now" and the lost colony is just lost b/c they just got absorbed into a tribe.
Maybe, but the way things were left that they would have packed up and taken with them is odd. And no message left for the husband that left and came back?

The clue/word was "Croatoan", carve into a tree, if memory serves. Aside from the mysterious Roanoke Colony, my number one favorite unsolved mystery is that of "Tunguska", that weird explosion taking place in a remote location of Siberia in the year of 1908 and that has always been very mysterious and never properly explained (i.e they never found a crater). Speaking of the X-Files, they even did a thing with "Tunguska" and included it into their mythology as well!

The meteorite apparently exploded before reaching the ground (hence no crater).
But it was fun Xfiles episodes, back in the days.

One thing I've always kind of thought about was that at one point there were 5 different species of humans on the planet that we lived alongside - and that a lot of them had physical characteristics that we see appear over and over again in our mythology. Neanderthals, for example, were "stout" - they had shorter legs than modern humans, but much larger rib cages (these are adaptations to the cold - larger lungs lets you warm up cold air as you inhale, and shorter limbs means you lose less body heat as blood goes through your legs), thicker skulls and stronger muscles for close quarters combat (they utilized ambush hunting instead of bow and arrow or throwing spear tactics, so had to be strong and hardy enough to tangle with larger prey animals up close), and larger noses (plus potentially red and blonde hair). Does that not sound an awful lot like a dwarf?
Then there's homo erectus, the most successful species of homonid. They lasted two million years, and were the first homonids to colonize Eurasia. That's lots of time to adapt to local environments, and there are examples of erectus that grew much larger than the "average" height - some might have been close to 6.5 to 7 feet in height (and some fossils that are still not officially placed might be the jawbone of an erectus specimen that was nearly 8 feet tall - or it might be a new species of giant ape. We aren't sure.), which at the time was enormous. A few ended up quite small - homo floriensis, an erectus subspecies, was like hobbit sized - but others were probably the largest homonids to ever live. And they were strong, too - their bones have far more attachment sites for muscle fiber than other homonids, almost as many as chipanzees and gorillas have, and they could have easily ripped a modern human's arms out of their sockets if they felt like it. So here we have a gigantic bipedal ape-man with superstrength, but also one that was intelligent enough to have a language, make stone tools, and cook with fire (and might have made art, and had religion, and built simple rafts - there's some examples of possible erectus artifacts that indicate they had a tentative mastery of art, and they would have needed a boat to reach some of the areas that they ended up in). And this thing, modern humans lived alongside it, probably had wars with them and worried about giant homo erectus tribes attacking them on a daily basis, and we barely won that struggle. I think that they are, in fact, the basis for all of our stories about violent, "dumb", gigantic humanoids - from ogres to orcs to oni to cyclopses. We still remember the ancient time when the world had creatures that looked like us, but more brutish, and were far stronger and larger than we were, and it scares us to this day.

If I remember correctly, Socrates didn't actually write anything down, and thought that philosophy was always best done in discussion. The better example might be Aristotle (as later noted in the video), who was famed for being an eloquent writer at the time. But you wouldn't know it, because what we have of him is pretty hard to read and closer to his lecture notes, rather than his completed manuscripts/dialogues.

Probably the most interesting part of the Voynich manuscript to me is the fold out that depicts nine spheres. You can make a good argument that they line up roughly to the Nine Worlds from Norse mythology, and depict how they are connected by the branches of Ygdrassil and the Bifrost. So maybe the Voynich manuscript doesn't match an Earth language because it came from Aelfhiem? My favorite lost treasure mystery is The Amber Room. Taken from Russia by the Nazis, it was transported back to Germany and subsequently lost (though likely was destroyed by bombings) by the time the Allies made their way in to the country. No evidence of it was ever found, and whether or not it was destroyed during the invasion remains a mystery to this day.
A friend who was a member of the church ran into a roadblock in doing her genealogy. She was about 70 when I met her and was a paragon of the community. She could not figure out who a direct-line female ancestor was married to. When she finished her prayers for the night and climbed into bed, a woman walked out of her closet. My friend screamed. The woman said, "I am here to tell you who my husband was." My friend screamed for her to leave.

Is it? They don't know what it actually says. You don't say a puzzle is solved just because you know what it'll look like when it's assembled.

My personal (and probably unpopular) opinion is that you forgetting that Skyward, The Cosmere, and Alcatraz exist for a year or so to focus entirely on The Rithmatist is not just a deal I would make, but one that would take me at absolute most a heartbeat to accept. .

In the fate series Jack the Ripper was actually a collection of orphaned children who worked together to kill people and that’s why Jack the Ripper was never found. No one suspects the kids. That was always my favorite Jack the Ripper theory even though it’s likely not true

Watching this again today (apparently, someone finally decoded, or claimed to, the manuscript), the story of the Voynich manuscript and how long we've known about it made me wonder whether H. P. Lovecraft learned about it and whether it was the inspiration for him coming up with the Necronomicon.
