  • @bulwellforestgardenrailway5301
    @bulwellforestgardenrailway5301 4 года назад +5

    Hey there. It seems you and I had a similar idea by building a cheap and quick garden railway. Some things I've learnt through trial and error is to use conductive carbon grease on the fishplates. This keeps the surface areas between the plates and track from oxidising whilst increasing the conductive area. Oh and yes, the power clips will oxidise and stop working very quickly. Ditch the power clips and pop some wires in the groove where the fishplate goes on the set track with a bit of carbon grease. It's a tight enough gap to grip the wires in place. I hope that helps. Looking forward to seeing what you do next 😊

    • @ModelMinutes
      @ModelMinutes  4 года назад

      Thanks for the info! Might have to investigate that grease :)

  • @martinwelsford1353
    @martinwelsford1353 4 года назад +2

    As you say its not perfect but it was quick and cheap to build and you describe it as "a lot of fun". Isnt that why we do model railways ?

  • @natsudragneal346
    @natsudragneal346 4 года назад +1

    Two things, first I noticed you didn't leave any gaps between the rails in you rail joiners. Track will expand based on heat so leaving gaps between the rails allows expansion without the track warping.
    Second you will probably find gunk build up between the rail and joiner that will cause valtage drop allong your line. This just seens to happen especially if the joiners loose. If you aren't that concerned with looks then a peace of wire soldered between each rail should remove this issue otherwise you can wiggle each joiner to clean them.
    I deal with a similar setup and this does help.

    • @ModelMinutes
      @ModelMinutes  4 года назад

      Thanks for the info - there are some gaps in places but clearly i didn't do enough as i have experienced some expansion. Not too much of an issue though as it is easily fixed. This is meant as a bit of fun and not a "serious" garden railway

    What you could maybe do is we're some trains slow down you should take advantage of that and get a nice long station for let's say your great Western 4-6-0 and plus it'll bring some more life in to your layout!

  • @MartyLJ57
    @MartyLJ57 4 года назад +1

    The area where the trains slow down you may have pitched the track buy hammering a nail too tight. A mistake I've made too many times trying to get trains running.

  • @bindonrail46
    @bindonrail46 4 года назад

    Nice little railway. I hope you are right about the shaded area, it would be horrid to come down and find the rails bent and broken out of the sleepers due to expansion. I'm sure you know, but most people leave gaps between the rails and solder wires between the joints for electrical continuity, or just leave the track free floating, solder the tracks together and put wooden blocks between them to stop them sliding together. Good luck with it. :-)

    • @ModelMinutes
      @ModelMinutes  4 года назад

      Thanks for the info! I have experienced some expansion in recent weeks with the hot weather - the worst that happened so far was that the track lifted and the pins will need to be tapped back into place, and one length or a curve decided to disconnect itself and fall off (but that one wasn't pinned anyway) so hopefully that's all for now :)

      I'm planning on doing something like this here in Canada, but my idea was to make either a plywood cover, or cover it with tarp in the winter. I live in BC, so rain is the biggest issue. My dream would be to have a garden shed with a proper layout in it, then have the trains run into the yard and back. That way the trains could be kept safe in the winter, while being able to show them off in the summer.
