when I worked for NS back in the 80's my crew worked at a remote switching location, there was a locker room with dining area and a shower for us to use. one day a hobo/wino took up with us and starting hanging around so we would bring him sandwiches and give him a few bucks from time to time, let him sleep in the locker and room and take showers. one day he showed up with bottle of wine and proceeded to get dawg drunk and became verbally abusive and started throwing rocks at the locomotive and us while we were trying to work. he eventually passed out so we stuck him in a empty boxcar that was going to Birmingham, Ala. from SC about 350 miles south. he came back about 3 or 4 weeks later and stayed mad at us for a long time. we tried to make him understand "you don't bite the hand that feeds you". he stayed around for while but never got drunk around us again.

The term HOBO originated following the Civil War. When guys were returned home, they were looking for work. Many of them took a gardening HOE, tied a bandana with a little of their belongings to it, put it over their shoulder, and just walked down the road. In them days a lot of work was on the farm or plantation. When they came to a plantation, they went up on the front porch, knocked on the door, and simply asked if there was any work to be done in the field. They already had a HOE and were read to work. The wives and daughters of the plantation owner in the south with their accents would say: there go them hoe boughs ( hoe boys or boys carrying gardening hoes) The origin of the word has been lost by many, but when we see guys jumping on trains, not just for a free ride, but too look for work in the 1920s and 1930s, we call them HOBOS. But the word should really be spelt HOEBO do to the gardening hoe they carried.
A HOBO is someone (male or female) who travels and works when they can. A TRAMP travels and doesn't work, and a bum is someone who doesn't travel and doesn't work. But you'll find a bum outside asking for a handout.

Well if you say so. But I kind of disagree some what. A HOBO travels and works, or looks for work. A TRAMP travels and doesn't work. And a bum doesn't travel or work. You'll find a bum outside asking for a handout. These three can be male OR female. And as for the drinking, some do drink, (hobos, tramps and bums) while others do not drink at all. And a real HOBO doesn't just wander. During the 1920s and 1930s when we had the DUST BOWL and the DEPRESSION and the stock market fell, many lost their jobs or farms. So what could they do? Travel down the road, look for work, and start life over. Now if they had a car, they weren't considered a HOBO even if they were doing the same thing: traveling and looking for work. Read my comment above BARRY SMITH

The 'Real Hobo' did not ask can you give me something to eat, they asked is there some work I could do for payment with food. This was told to me in person by Reefer Charlie and confirmed by SteamTrain Murry both of whom rode the rails when steam trains were the only trains

Louis Lamour explains in his book Education of a wandering man that prior to the 1920s the railroads found it beneficial to transport the HOBO because they were the ones harvesting the crops during the 30s it changed to the bum.
