it was really helpful for someone to mention that you need a bottoming tap. I've been looking for blind hole taps and nothing I could find was what I needed for practically the same purpose as adding screws to a hotwheels car and the only other advice I seen people give (machinists no less) was to grind the end off a regular tap. So this video helped a lot
Happy it helped Hydros! Since some of these posts are so short, it's really essential for a bottoming tap to get as many viable threads as you can. Happy customizing! 👊😉👍
Yes it is! Im astonished I can see the table cloth again! 🤣 Thanks brother, Ill have some more between now and this weekend. Itll get a bit more interesting! 👊😁👍
Hi Scott, I listed some amazon links in the vid description when I uploaded this. Keep in mind you can find the screws at Ace Hardware if you have any close by. 😉👍
I appreciate your video as I got the same screws and the tools and the tap after watching this and did my cars and as a beginner your tips and tricks really help
Yeah you need to use your pilot bit you used to drill the center of the rivet and drill that up into the post about a 1/4" or just long enough for the screw to go in all the way. 👊😁👍
exactly where does one get the screws? And are there metal tapping screws? Not necessarily the self tapping one. i looked in ur Amazon list and didn't see any
That is for the link on the tap and screws I can prolly use better screws because the hot wheels mini RC cars are plastic with screws under it that comes apart that why I wanna start putting my own mainline metal bodys on the rc engines thank you so much👍💯
The smallest one Ace Hardware has to offer. I believe its a Dewalt. You can find the tap at Ace Hardware, grab it and you'll be able to size up the base of it to the right handle. 👊😁👍
Thanks Chuck! Yeah the recessed/tapered heads just fit better. Very useful especially on lowered projects where you need clearance. Thanks my friend! 👊😁👍
Amen! And some posts are EXTREMELY short such as the '55 BelAir Gasser from post and the '62 Chevy rear post. Almost impossible to drill and tap without running a screw all the way through. 🥺
@@oldscoolcooldiecast1879 never, I drill a bit, hold my finger nail on the bit to mark the depth, pull it out and check it, then see how much deeper I can go, repeat until I feel I'm deep enough. The post on the rear of those JEEP gladiators I did is even shorter than the Gasser post, is crazy short. 👍🏻✌😁 now that I just told you all of that, I will probably drill all the way through my next one 🤣🤣🤣
I always use 2-56x1/8 and never have any problems with depth, of course I do alot of gassers and we know the front post is very short, the rear of the jeep gladiators are as well, very short indeed. 👍✌😁
@@oldscoolcooldiecast1879 the front post on Gassers is very short, so 1/8 works perfect, dont have to drill as deep. And I actually use them on every single car I do without any problems. I do have some 3/16 in case I need longer though. ✌😁
@@hewittzhotwheelz gotcha I was just inspecting it and I see atleast I know what tools and all now I’m that much closer and I think I can tap it thanks brother much appreciated
@@hewittzhotwheelz not sure if you new but some 55 gassers has the front post behind the front axles also if that helps I know it’s rlc cars thou not sure about premium it was switch several years back but not sure how far down the levels it went
You do not need to tap at all... drill the correct size hole then run the screw in a little at a time backing out periodically as you go... the screw threads will tap the soft pot metal easily.

I am getting started with my grandsons. Can you list the tools and screw sizes maybe link to purchase

Sense Derek coming at you with the most useful tutorial in customizing diecast.
Haha, thanks brother! 😁👊🙏

Awesome to hear! I'm super happy you found this helpful and useful! 👊😁👍
Is it also possible to just screw the screws in without tapping first?
You can surely do that as the metal is soft enough, however I still prefer to tap. 😁👍
what's that thing you used for carving the slots for the screw
A tap? Is that what you mean? 🤔
Great vid! Thanks for the Amazon links. Thats super helpful!
Happy to help Legacy! 👊😁👍
Which Allan head screws are those? I’m only finding Phillips, thanks in advance!
Hey 713, its tough finding the allen screws online. I get mine at Ace Hardware, 3mm x.050", shortest they make! 👊😁👍
I used the exact same tap that you showed but I just can't get it to grip. Do you need to make a 3mm pilot hole?
Yeah you need to use your pilot bit you used to drill the center of the rivet and drill that up into the post about a 1/4" or just long enough for the screw to go in all the way. 👊😁👍
@@HonestDiecast thank you that worked great

N2 the link should work for I believe a multi-length 3M screw kit. You can find the appropriate screws at Ace Hardware though! 😁👍

Very nicely executed brother, I used a 2/56 screws, but they are not pan head like yours which I really like. Great how to video brother
Thanks David, happy you found it useful! Seems like most use 2/56" but I use 3mm, they both get the job done. 👊😁👍
ty, after watching some tutorials and finding out they just super glue it, i was disipointed till i found ur video. like given
Thank you! I personally dont mind the extra effort for a better result and its not hard. Glad you found it useful my friend! 👊😁👍

Very cool tutorial, Derek! I'll have to look into the pan-heads. I'm using button heads now, but those look amazing.

The shorter your screws the less tapping you need to do.
