Being in lockdown Arnie's race was the first to give me and many Aussies a new lease of life and something to enjoy. I think you were the catalyst for the dolphins and the rest of the Aus Olympic team with that epic and historic victory. Cheers Arnie!
Shoutout to Ariarne. She’s the new swimming superstar. Never thought I ever see anyone beat Ledecky but she’s the only swimmer in the world who can say she beat her 3 times. Australia has a true golden standard for swimming in the world.
Well, im not an Aussie but that 400, gonna go down in history as one of the greatest Olympic races ppl have ever seen. & you are a great champion Arnie! (hope shawn watch the race huh.. 😊)
Ariarne titmus becomes the first Australian since 2008 to win individual world Championship gold and individual olympics gold ,no present Australian swimmer have achieved that.... She is a superstar
She's fantastic! The races in Tokyo were classics. I especially liked that Titmus and Ledecky were so friendly and respectful to each other after all the races, regardless of who won. To me, that's the sign of a true champion!
Great interview. She is so open and engaging and well-spoken. I love her attitude towards the sport and the work that is required - she is top-notch! Thank you!!
New listener here Brett wasn't sure about you at first but love how you let Arnie talk and speak without interrupting. Also Arnie what a legend, total queen!
@@InsidewithBrettHawke I think I mistook your calmness for being boring cos most podcast hosts that I watch are loud and over the top but as I listened to the podcast I appreciated you calmly getting the questions out and having an organic conversation and best of all letting the guest be the star of the show, keen to listen to your next one. 🙌
Hey mate, Came back to watch the whole video as when I first commented 11 hours' ago, I had literally rolled out of bed. Morning in NZ! This video is priceless. Arnie is truly made of champion material. She is mature beyond her years and I'm confident she'll continue to blossom and have a fantastic career. I love her answers regarding how she likes the grind and the hurt from training. She doesn't shy away from the tough sessions Dean puts her through and it's exemplary of her phenomenal character. She's definitely grounded but I can see the Mamba mentality in her. No excuses. Show up and execute! I also liked that Will to Win video. Suffice to say, I probably have watched it at least 20 times too! The video is part serious, part fun. I don't know if many people picked it up but between 0:44-0:57 of that video, you can see their synergy when Dean talks about admiring people 'who want to be the best, but not talking about it, not saying they want to be the best, but actually wanting, having this desire and will to be the best.' The smile from her face fades and you can see her eyes lock into her coach's - the killer instinct is written all over her face! I picked upon little things like that because I'm a big fan of coaching. To see that kind of connection between her and Dean tells me their teamwork is unshakeable. Somethings needn't be said. You can just feel it. Their partnership reminds me of Rafa and Uncle Tony's (tennis), MJ and Phil Jackson's (basketball), Michael Phelps and Bob Bowman's (swimming). A current analogy in swimming I can think of is Adam Peaty and Mel Marshall's. I recall watching the ISL earlier in the year and Peaty's in the Skins final I think against Shimanovich? I paraphrase here but she said something along the lines of 'Every since I've known ya, you've always been the last man standing. Swim fast, you got this.' Peaty doesn't even flinch but you can tell he's listening to every word. The way she gets him locked-in, it's a thing of beauty. You see it with Dean and Arnie too! Truly inspiring.
Also Brett congratulations on 5k subscribers. I knew it was coming and I believe it only gets better and you deserve everything that you have worked for. I've been following since Grant Hackett... day one.
Brilliant interview brett- can you ask Dean when you interview him 'how will he change/adapt for the next 3 years with Ariane- will it be the same relentless as she said it was in the interview'. Is it possible for her to continue to endure it/continue to grow from it.
Brett so glad she was able to get on your podcast. Only thing left is the world's and breaking the world records. In my opinion she is not in her prime yet. Now she can relax and just swim. From now on I think Aussie women start dominating women's swimming Americans included. Great job always.
Excellent interview. Touched on basically everything I was wondering about, including her future in the 800. The strategy at 4 x 200 was clearly wrong. McKeon should have led off with Titmus anchor. You have to expect other girls to swim out of their skin, like assuming a made putt in the Ryder Cup or Solheim Cup. Titmus would have overcome fatigue with a target to chase down
Before the Olympic I wasn’t even a fan of swimming. After seeing Titmus able to produce such a performance against what people called Ledecky “the greatest female swimmer of all time”, I’m now a big fan of Arnie and of this sport l. Looking forward to next year’s Commonwealth and World Championship.
I’m not much of a fan of watching swimming either I swim myself and compete but I’ve never been interested in watching it except during the Olympics months before the olympics even started I was like can’t wait for the swimming
Interesting interview. She says it was never about Katie and then goes on to say she and Dean had a plan to take down the GOAT in Katie. Sounds like it really was about Katie. No question, that 400 was an amazing race but let's admit it was about beating Katie.
Brett I still remember when Bill Kirby talked about Thorpie going sub 220 on that kick set and your reaction was long course? And then you went Jeeesssuus. That was so funny. Do you see a little bit of Thorpie in Titmus?
Congrats to Titmus for a great games, a superstar to be sure by beating Ledecky in two races. But before you throw Ledecky under the bus realize she beat Titmus by over a second in the 800 and that was with a time no where close to her WR of 8:04.79. And her split of 1:53.76 in the 4x200 relay beat Titmus and was the fastest in the race, allowing her to chase down Neale who was a second and a half ahead of Ledecky on the final leg when they went in the water, to claim the silver medal. Again, hats off to Titmus, who made Olympic history. But Katie also made more Olympic history of her own adding two more Golds to her record Olympic haul. Titmus, as good as she is, has a long way to go to to accomplish what Ledecky has.
What was her individual 200 time what happened when she has titmus in the lane right next to her, truth is that ledecky will not win a single race in future if she gets titmus in the lane next to her
It"s a pity that Paris is the last Olympics for the rivalry between Katie and Arairne, at least on equal terms. Time is catchng up with Katie as it inevitably does for everyone and competitive swimming is a sport for the young. Katie was already on the decline in Tokyo but she has been so far ahead that even on the decline she could beat all but the very best. Katie hasn't set any new world records since 2019 when she was of age 22 and the very fast times she swam regularly are much less frequent since she turned 22. Michael Phelps didn't set any new world records after the age of 24 either, but like Katie, because he was so far ahead of the field, he could still win often. I've looked at the results of other great swimmers and it seems that the vast majority peak before the age of 25. Ariarne is a great champion, anybody who can beat Katie 3 times must be, but she will be 27 at the next Olympics. In the meanwhile she will pick up many golds in the World Championships and Pan Pacific games. Australia is a major Olympic swimming power and surely has a great swimming infrastructure to be able to consistently produce so many top class swimmers.
