My grandmother (I am 72) wore a wrap dress like that around the house. It was called a "house coat". In cheap printed cotton with bias bound edges, it was just a version of an apron.
What an amazing memory! The wrap dress truly has a rich and versatile history. It's fascinating to see how a piece evolved from a "housecoat" to a fashion icon.
Exactly. I have pictures from when I was little and my grandmother and mother had them. DVF de NOT invent the wrap this. And I dispute it looks good on everyone. This woman knows nothing. All the unrelated visuals are also annoying. The sheath dress is more flattering for all when A line.
I had several DVF wrap dresses back in the day and loved them, although sometimes the dress cuffs were a bit too exaggerated. Still, I’d love to find one now. And shirt dresses tend to look too matronly on me. One dress I like is the empire waist, that helps cover a stomach or hips that are perhaps a little more generous than one would wish.
Wrap dresses are iconic! Maybe it's time to rediscover that style, now with more modern options. And empire waist dresses are truly great for highlighting elegance without sacrificing comfort. ✨
if you wear one under a long duster or knee or hem length open top like a shirtdress, solid sheath with print open dress. when I travel I pack black stretch boot cut leggings and black tank, brown tank and matching ribbed tube skirt and extra red or gray tank. then I have 3-4 printed stretchy but tailored tops and Im good for 10days to three weeks. Im 5'8" and very apple.
My favorite is the shirt dress! I own several. Also have a couple wrap dresses I’ve had forever and still always look great! I’m a bit too heavy in the hip area to feel comfortable in the sheath.
No, sorry, A-line doesn't work for people whose shoulders are wider than the rest of their body (ie inverted triangle body shape. Sorry to disappoint. If you have swimmer-shoulders, you end up looking like a fridge even if you have an athletic body beneath. I know this from personal experience, alas. I love A-lines on people of other body shapes though :-)
I have never really had that much luck with any of these styles. As an apple shape, around size 12, the only dresses that really seem to flatter me are the fit & flare styles.
I love and wear all three of these dress shapes, and she is right - there is a variation that can work for virtually any body type. Variations include length, fullness, the presence or absence of gathers/darts/shaping, and neckline. You simply try on until you find what fits and flatters. If you don’t know where to shop locally, go online and search for “midi wrap dress with collar” or whatever you want. If you sew, there are patterns for every variation. Try different belts placed higher and lower; add a scarf if you’re self conscious about your neck; take mirror photos of each outfit so you can look at it objectively. Finding what looks good takes a bit of work, but it’s worth it.
For some reason, the wrap around dress never clicked with me. I was "there" during the 70s and steered clear of it - just as I do now! The thing is, I don't know why I don't like it. Maybe, it's because I really like tailored and A line dresses 🤷♀️
It might be that the fitted style and A-line dresses better match your personal taste. What matters most is feeling comfortable and confident in what you wear!
I agree with your third sentence. The wrap dress always made my large breast look larger and my smaller breast look smaller. It also always gapped at the cross in the bust.

@@chriswatson1698 I disagree with this statement. Some people believe that wearing clothes that are cinched at the waist really flatters natural curves, especially for those with larger hips. The key is to choose clothes that fit your body and personal style.
@@lindastrander9486 This is true in some cases. If the outfit is well-proportioned, it can accentuate the waist and create a more balanced look. Not everything that is cinched at the waist will make the butt look too big.

I agree. A sheath dress does not need to have princess seams. The button holes must be just right. Not everyone is suited for a straight dress. Venus of Willendorf figures will find it almost impossible to look good in this last style. The buttonholes stretch horizontal making the front pull apart. Vertical buttonholes gape.
