    Love it. I'm also a Chud follower. Just subscribed to you. I'm making a smoker out of a 75 gallon propane tank right now. Those tack welds on the front door trim remind me of Judas Priest, I did the same on my 1st tank build. I think you should call your boxes Judas Pits. Love it.

    I have watched this vid countless times trying to figure out the height of the cook surface to the bottom and how much space from cook surface to top of top cover. Planning on making one this coming spring, probably March when it's warm enough to work in the garage, you know, heatwave season here in southeastern Mn.

      Hahaha!
      I didn’t really call out those measurements did I? It’s roughly 19” from the cooking surface to the coal bed and 5” from the cook surface to the top of the lid. Hope this helps and good luck on the build!

    Looks great Nick! The way you tacked it every inch or so gives it the appearance that it’s been old school hot riveted, a very industrial look. I can’t wait to build mine. On that left side you could also make that hold a butcher block cutting board, removable out of some angle iron. Chud did a tutorial about his filming setup, reference that video and you will see what I’m talking about. Great work

    • @fabmakebuildcook6274
      @fabmakebuildcook6274  3 года назад

      Thanks Nicholas and yes the spot welding does make it seem kinda industrial right? That's a great idea with the butcher block! Might look good with a matching lid handle and damper dowels. Tempting...Good luck with your build!

    I'm also building smokers by myself. Usually Offset smokers. I was inspired by your video (and Chud's BBQ), so i tried to build one of these direct heat smokers. The thing grows.... Just a couple of hours more and it's ready to cook.

    • @fabmakebuildcook6274
      @fabmakebuildcook6274  3 года назад +1

      I like it! The lid shouldn't warp since it's thicker metal and will never get all that hot. Maybe 600-700°F at most if there's a live fire in the cooker. I would guess material costs for this would be around $300-$450. Thanks for watching and the name idea!

    • @fabmakebuildcook6274
      @fabmakebuildcook6274  3 года назад

      Thanks Ben. The angle iron on the bottom is for rigidity and support only. On the larger Chud Box I experienced some warpage of the bottom plate due to heat. I welded on some of the same angle iron after the fact and it's been rock solid ever since. So this angle iron was installed to mitigate that right from the beginning.

    I love your build content... Been watching all day keep up the good work u inspired me to build my own. I'm gonna build one like the beast of chub u made but I'm gonna do is two grates but the top grates fold out and fold in... But question on a scale from 1-10 how would say the smoke level is at I like 6 flavour of smoke nothing heavy or light I believe it's all gotta do with the flow and movement of smoke and obviously as well as the wood flavour helps too

    • @fabmakebuildcook6274
      @fabmakebuildcook6274  Год назад

      Thanks Robert!
      Depending on the wood chips used and how much draft you have in the cooker, you can get a surprising amount of smoke flavor using direct heat pits. You won't necessarily get the best smoke ring, but saturating the pit with smoke and letting it linger can generate great smoke flavor.

It's funny how it sounds terrible on camera sometimes but rarely sounds weak or sputtery while welding. I'm definitely happy with the Yeswelder machines I have. They're not Miller or Lincoln but they'll do (Especially for the cost difference). Thanks for the compliment and I have all the intentions of keeping this channel rolling. • @fabmakebuildcook6274
      @fabmakebuildcook6274  3 года назад +1

      Hey Fred. The bottom and side plates are fully welded together for a tight seal. The flat bar and angle I used as trim are tack welded for aesthetics and to reduce the amount of heat and time I put into the cooker. The door flanges aren't fully welded since I've had zero issues with smoke leaking from them this way, and it helps reduce the amount of heat put into them to avoid warpage. Hope this helps!

    • @fabmakebuildcook6274
      @fabmakebuildcook6274  3 года назад

      Hey Giovanni. I would suggest going thicker than 3/32 if possible. That thickness could work but not sure how long it will last or hold up to the elements. Having stable temperatures may also be difficult. Would suggest 1/8" at a minimum. BUT!! If that's all you have access to I'd use it in a heartbeat. Would probably try to elevate the coal bed so it's not resting directly on that thin metal though. Will burn through relatively quick I'd imagine. Maybe double up the bottom?

    What size would you recommend now that you have both. I'm interested in getting one, mini or 3/4?

      Just depends on how many people you typically cook for. If a family of 4 you'd be completely fine with the smaller version. It has similar cooking space as a standard Weber kettle. If you like to throw down and cook for many people than the medium size is what I'd recommend.

    Where would someone buy the steel to make this?

    • @fabmakebuildcook6274

      At a metal supply store. You can google it for one near you. There's also online metal suppliers if you're particularly remote. I get my metal from Coremark Metals in Minneapolis.

    Subsctibed!! Hello FabMakeBuildCook. Dig your craftsmanship. Also, nice garage set up. Using some of the ideas you employ in this build, I will use in my next build. I'm an amature fabricator/welder in the Austin, TX. area. If anyone is interested, the place to buy your metal is Metals4U in Round Rock TX. I am not affiliated with them in any way, but I am a customer. The reason I mention them is that they sell to both amatures and big time operators. They treat small timers well just like the big timers. Their prices are reasonable and best of all, they sell remnents and cut offs if you don't need a whole 20 ft. length of flat or round stock. You can rummage thru their rems and usually come up with what you need. Also, they will custon sheer sheet up to 1/8th inch if you give them your dimensions for a nominal fee. Happy build'n and BBQ'n y'all.

      Hello, so i was wondering if you've built your version of the chud box yet?

      @@Mr.Eric314 hello O.G. Well, didn't have to. Just used a 10" stainless steel extension ring from a gutted Santa Maria grill combined with a 4" extension ring from a rotisserie on my trusty Weber 22" kettle. That gives me plenty of distance from the coals for direct 'over the coals' cooking.
      Call me lazy, lol! But....it saved me time for other projects. Right now, I'm de-raking a hardtail sportster chopper frame in between work and honey do's.
