I have watched this vid countless times trying to figure out the height of the cook surface to the bottom and how much space from cook surface to top of top cover. Planning on making one this coming spring, probably March when it's warm enough to work in the garage, you know, heatwave season here in southeastern Mn.
Hahaha! I didn’t really call out those measurements did I? It’s roughly 19” from the cooking surface to the coal bed and 5” from the cook surface to the top of the lid. Hope this helps and good luck on the build!
Looks great Nick! The way you tacked it every inch or so gives it the appearance that it’s been old school hot riveted, a very industrial look. I can’t wait to build mine. On that left side you could also make that hold a butcher block cutting board, removable out of some angle iron. Chud did a tutorial about his filming setup, reference that video and you will see what I’m talking about. Great work

I like it! The lid shouldn't warp since it's thicker metal and will never get all that hot. Maybe 600-700°F at most if there's a live fire in the cooker. I would guess material costs for this would be around $300-$450. Thanks for watching and the name idea!
Thanks Ben. The angle iron on the bottom is for rigidity and support only. On the larger Chud Box I experienced some warpage of the bottom plate due to heat. I welded on some of the same angle iron after the fact and it's been rock solid ever since. So this angle iron was installed to mitigate that right from the beginning.

I'm gonna build one like the beast of chub u made but I'm gonna do is two grates but the top grates fold out and fold in... But question on a scale from 1-10 how would say the smoke level is at I like 6 flavour of smoke nothing heavy or light I believe it's all gotta do with the flow and movement of smoke and obviously as well as the wood flavour helps too
Thanks Robert! Depending on the wood chips used and how much draft you have in the cooker, you can get a surprising amount of smoke flavor using direct heat pits. You won't necessarily get the best smoke ring, but saturating the pit with smoke and letting it linger can generate great smoke flavor.

I would guess around $450-$600 for everything on the larger Chud Box but you'll have leftover metal for sure. That's what I used to make the Mini Chud.
Was your yes welder runnung good? It sounded a little off. I am still considering the Yeswelder. Would you say you are still happy with it? You do nice work, I hope you stick with it.
Yeah it runs fine but I'm at the ass end of my CO2 bottle so I think there might be some crud getting in the gas shielding. It's funny how it sounds terrible on camera sometimes but rarely sounds weak or sputtery while welding. I'm definitely happy with the Yeswelder machines I have. They're not Miller or Lincoln but they'll do (Especially for the cost difference). Thanks for the compliment and I have all the intentions of keeping this channel rolling. Just started on my 94 gallon offset build this weekend and have already made some decent progress!
The ones with hinges built in are mag-tabs. The red painted magnets I believe are called welder magnets or fabrication magnets. Could be wrong though. Hope that helps

Thanks! I would say they are similar to an ugly drum but with a bit more room :). I haven't had any exhaust issues yet and the only dripping action is the rendered fats dripping onto the coals. This thing cooks phenomenally and is one of my preferred methods. Thanks for watching and the comment!
It took quite a while! Around 12-14 hours to complete. Using left over pieces really added a ton of work to the build. With whole sheets of steel it might only take 8-10 hours I'd guess. Probably much less after you've built a handful of the same size. Thanks for watching!
Hey Fred. The bottom and side plates are fully welded together for a tight seal. The flat bar and angle I used as trim are tack welded for aesthetics and to reduce the amount of heat and time I put into the cooker. The door flanges aren't fully welded since I've had zero issues with smoke leaking from them this way, and it helps reduce the amount of heat put into them to avoid warpage. Hope this helps!
Hey Giovanni. I would suggest going thicker than 3/32 if possible. That thickness could work but not sure how long it will last or hold up to the elements. Having stable temperatures may also be difficult. Would suggest 1/8" at a minimum. BUT!! If that's all you have access to I'd use it in a heartbeat. Would probably try to elevate the coal bed so it's not resting directly on that thin metal though. Will burn through relatively quick I'd imagine. Maybe double up the bottom?

Just depends on how many people you typically cook for. If a family of 4 you'd be completely fine with the smaller version. It has similar cooking space as a standard Weber kettle. If you like to throw down and cook for many people than the medium size is what I'd recommend.
At a metal supply store. You can google it for one near you. There's also online metal suppliers if you're particularly remote. I get my metal from Coremark Metals in Minneapolis.

I'm an amature fabricator/welder in the Austin, TX. area. If anyone is interested, the place to buy your metal is Metals4U in Round Rock TX. I am not affiliated with them in any way, but I am a customer. The reason I mention them is that they sell to both amatures and big time operators. They treat small timers well just like the big timers. Their prices are reasonable and best of all, they sell remnents and cut offs if you don't need a whole 20 ft. length of flat or round stock. You can rummage thru their rems and usually come up with what you need. Also, they will custon sheer sheet up to 1/8th inch if you give them your dimensions for a nominal fee. Just used a 10" stainless steel extension ring from a gutted Santa Maria grill combined with a 4" extension ring from a rotisserie on my trusty Weber 22" kettle. That gives me plenty of distance from the coals for direct 'over the coals' cooking. Call me lazy, lol! But....it saved me time for other projects. Right now, I'm de-raking a hardtail sportster chopper frame in between work and honey do's.

Thank you. The 1" square tube is 1/8" wall thickness. The cook chamber is 28" tall. 20" standoff from the coal bed.
Have you seen the smokesling pit. Try to replicate that one.

Just depends on how many people you typically cook for. If a family of 4 you'd be completely fine with the smaller version. It has similar cooking space as a standard Weber kettle. If you like to throw down and cook for many people than the medium size is what I'd recommend.

Where would someone buy the steel to make this?
At a metal supply store. You can google it for one near you. There's also online metal suppliers if you're particularly remote. I get my metal from Coremark Metals in Minneapolis.

Subsctibed!! Hello FabMakeBuildCook. Dig your craftsmanship. Also, nice garage set up. Using some of the ideas you employ in this build, I will use in my next build. I'm an amature fabricator/welder in the Austin, TX. area. If anyone is interested, the place to buy your metal is Metals4U in Round Rock TX. I am not affiliated with them in any way, but I am a customer. The reason I mention them is that they sell to both amatures and big time operators. They treat small timers well just like the big timers. Their prices are reasonable and best of all, they sell remnents and cut offs if you don't need a whole 20 ft. length of flat or round stock. You can rummage thru their rems and usually come up with what you need. Also, they will custon sheer sheet up to 1/8th inch if you give them your dimensions for a nominal fee. @@Mr.Eric314 hello O.G. Well, didn't have to. Just used a 10" stainless steel extension ring from a gutted Santa Maria grill combined with a 4" extension ring from a rotisserie on my trusty Weber 22" kettle. That gives me plenty of distance from the coals for direct 'over the coals' cooking.
Call me lazy, lol! But....it saved me time for other projects. Right now, I'm de-raking a hardtail sportster chopper frame in between work and honey do's.

That build was all drop pieces for the most part so hard to tell. Maybe $600-$700?
