Just putting on square deadzone is only one half of dialling it in. Next you adjust the sliders. Try mine: Left slider (low slider) on 40, Right slider (high slider) on 85. The shape of your deadzone should now be large grey plus + in middle, and in corners are 4 light colored boxes and darker blue trims. Now in rocket league game settings, put your controller deadzone to somewhere between 0.03 - 0.07, I use 0.03, and dodge deadzone of 0.40-0.80, i use 0.45. What this is doing is now when you push your analogue stick perfectly up or down for a flip cancel, you can be off by much more of an angle, you can be almost diagonal up and stlll get a perfect flip cancel with no side/diagonal flipping by accident by not having a perfect up or down stick movement. Test it, use joystick self visualizer in bakkesmod, and push straight up, then very slowly push to the right or left into the diagonal angles by various amounts and then do a double jump flip and watch how your perfect up/down push doesnt leave the perfect flip cancel sweet spot until your much further into the diagonal angle. This means you can push slightly diagonally up or down and still get a perfect flip without fail, removing human error. Try it, youll be amazed at how much cleaner your play gets.

Holy shit, it's a night and day difference, this is the way rocket league is meant to be played, I hope you do a video explaining the steam controller settings too.
So it basically makes it to where you can control or turn any flip cancel left or right? so for example having a square deadzone would be better because on a ceiling double tap you could turn while holding your flip cancel to be able to double tap easier rather than being stuck in the animation for a bit? I wasn't too sure on the exact implication of it. Great Video btw, you're doing gods work here my guy.
1 thing to note is to get a perfect speed flip. on a square deadzone the window to hit it is much smaller meaning its harder to get an optimal speed flip
Do you know why that is? Because I have very consistent speedflips in both directions Maybe I got used to that small window, but Idk what that small window is
@@ReflexRL well if you are wanting consistent cancels front and backward, while not having this loose feeling. The deadzone goes way up. It might a little simpler to access the diagonals in theory but it feels like there is a point on the speedflip part that doesnt feel quite right. I mightself cant do them but when I made change it feel like I needed to this weird adjustment if not the car would flip weird when doing the attempt.
@@roxasdracun8661 Tbh the only reason I tried square deadzone was bc my turning radius felt very slow/sluggish like my car wasn't fully inputting on the sides. I wish there was a pros and cons list of cross vs square for in game purposes. For example why most pros use cross but not square if this is a factor - does it make other aspects of gameplay WORSE?
i think in the video he said they dont really need or care about it which can be taken two ways. One is it doesnt matter for competitive gameplay or its a detriment.
they dont really need it because they are already good enough controlling diagonal cancels also without giving up a low deadzone. Since they are not doing freestyle mechanics, diagonal cancels are good enough for resets. they dont need all the other stuff I do to look cool hahah. I can also do what pros do, but they just never stop to think if they need square because they are good enough without.
Could you talk about the disadvantages of square deadzones, higher deadzones, freestyler deadzone settings in general for competitive play and to mitigate them or the way to try and have the best of both worlds? I mean there is a reason most pros use cross or circle with 0.05 deadzone no?
@@djamiljo93 only 2 disadvantages of square are 1. You need to use a controller configurator or a Thrustmastwr controller and 2. you may just have so many hours on cross, that flipping on square might just be too bit of a change for you. As for “freestyler deadzone settings”. the only reason for square is to flip cancel (bot talking about speedflips) and the only reason for higher deadzones is more consistent flip cancels. Ill always say this. The lowest deadzone is always the best deadzone, but there is a deadzone where you CANNOT do consistent flip canceling and consistent up, down and side inputs. so just go for that deadzone where you are able to. 0.20 is a good start, there is not a big difference imo watch my cancels tutorial and in my deadzone and sens tutorial I explain in a section why pros dont use square or high deadzones

Maktuf do you maybe know how much anti deadzone and Max zone pros are using for cross deadzone on ds4windows? Or what would you recoment me for ps5 controller for Competitive
Could you make this video but about cross deadzone? I believe Vitality Zen uses cross deadzone, and I would like to understand exactly how it works and the logic of why and how to set it up. I got something sorta working in steam controller but I'm not sure I used the values liquipedia gave me correctly. It seems like next level if used right, I got decent at mechanics using regular deadzones with just stick custom input sensitivity curves in steam controller settings, I actually believe that square deadzone would prevent me from controlling flip cancels diagonally and in competitive the timing it creates can't be sacrificed for easier front flip inputs.
How to set it up is very simple cause you already have it in ur controller. Cross deadzone is the same as square u just cant control fromt and back cancels diagonally Everything else you can do. Diagonal cancels are the exact same. Of course the muscle memory can change bit, but u just cancel a tiny bit differently and get the same results
I don't think it's impossible to become a freestyler with free air roll. I have been a free air roll main for 8 years and just recently within the past year started learning high level mechanics and can consistently perform high level aerial flip mechanics with free air roll. I only use directional air roll when necessary (half flip, speed flip, stall, etc) all aerial car control is done via free/NAR. I know it's not efficient and I've tried learning DAR, but my car control is just godly with NAR compared to DAR. I will continue practicing DAR though and hope I can catch up eventually. My plan is to be good with both as I think it'll open a realm of options that strictly DAR users don't have because I think there are scenarios where good NAR usage can be extremely beneficial in the air.
Ye You can be really good with free airroll Watch MK, Bork and other players But still they cant do some mechanics and movements that are very simple with DAR to make. The skill ceiling is just higher with DAR so thats why I recommend it
yup now my controller is completely screwed isnt working properly and is boosting when driving forwards jumping when reversing and i cant use the joystick to move through menus what do i do
@ReC.e I have the same problem, and what is happening is steam is messing up the controls so you want to close steam when you play rocket league on epic
I required the video of making the square zone feel like crossdeadzone. I been playing with a while again and it feels ways loose when aerialing. I tried increasing the controller deadzone but somehow it starts killing the diagonals. The way I test it is on the pre matches for tourny and make the car spin with nose on the ground. Which I couldnt do which cross deadzone.
Maktuf, what specific mechanics would you use square deadzone for? im trying to learn helis, but square deadzone makes it harder for me to stall. I can usually stall all the time, but now im kinda struggling and idk if its worth the switch
What about Bork? He used free air roll and he was good! No offense though. I use it as well and I’m good at it but how would it be hard to use it with square deadzone and freestyling? I have 600 hours with it and I’ve hit 6 resets and missed the shot
@@PuIseZxck I never said he wasnt good he is cracked, but still limited in the amount of mechanics he can do. there are other great players that use normal airroll like DLG who has the longest airdribble time for example. Hey! loved the video. I have one problem. Whenever i turn on the playstation controller configurations support, steam starts using my controller as kbm inputs... this completely messed with my game. what have i done wrong?
I couldn't see if anyone else had mentioned in the comments but I wanted to ask your opinion on using the steam controller configuration settings over using the native controller inputs RL has. I've tried to go back to steam config after switching it off ages ago and I cant even control a dribble properly because of the muscle memory difference. Obviously using steam you'll be getting input latency, but is that a tradeoff that is worth having a square deadzone for?
Are you playing from the epic launcher? If so, are you running steam in the background? If yes, there's a setting on steam that is doing that. I forget which one it is but it's what caused it for me. Or, you could just leave steam signed out and closed
Noooo, I just now found out that I have to roll through the air by rolling to the right or left, I've always done it by rolling through the air. Any tips?
my BT connection has massive lag spikes when using the ds4win guide for some reason. Using usb cable fixed it but I don't understand why changing the deadzone would make the BT connection unstable. I have tried 1-4ms polling
@Maktuf bt can have lower input lag compared to usb if you increase rolling rate. 1ms vs 4ms on usb, I've read . But the main issue I have with usb is that the connection becomes loose after a while so the cable just drops off randomly.
my square deadzone on ds4windows is so weird My controller will randomly disconnect and then reconnect but when it reconnects for some reason I cant flip cancel

if you are epxerienceing massive input lag, make sure you selected the legacy input settings! that should fix it :) 12:45
How to get the joystick selfcheck shown in the screen? I got it installed, but it is not showing.
Holy shit, it's a night and day difference, this is the way rocket league is meant to be played, I hope you do a video explaining the steam controller settings too.
it is finally officialy online ;)
Yes hahahaha
You are the real first in here
So it basically makes it to where you can control or turn any flip cancel left or right? so for example having a square deadzone would be better because on a ceiling double tap you could turn while holding your flip cancel to be able to double tap easier rather than being stuck in the animation for a bit? I wasn't too sure on the exact implication of it. Great Video btw, you're doing gods work here my guy.
1 thing to note is to get a perfect speed flip. on a square deadzone the window to hit it is much smaller meaning its harder to get an optimal speed flip
Do you know why that is? Because I have very consistent speedflips in both directions
Maybe I got used to that small window, but Idk what that small window is
@@Maktuf the angle to get it
This is odd to see. Are you sure this is true? Because I can actually speed flip easier / more consistent with square deadzone
After switching, my turns feel a lot better/snappier but now I definitely feel the wobbly feeling in the air. The speed-flip thing was just a coincidence for me
When you introduced DS4, this maked me want to Switch on PS4 controller. I discovered this program a bit time ago but i hesitated in using this.
I play on a ps5 with a normal ass controller but I still watched this whole video😭
@@Zeus-yt09 u can use any controller to switch to square
Wow this video is amazing, i was wondering why my reverse half flips on an xbox controller were so much easier than my ps4 controller (i like ps4 controller more though) after switching to Square deadzone the ps4 controller is now just as easy as my xbox controller, thank you!
great job maktuf!
would you recommend square deadzone for ranked? I'm not a freestyler so I'm curious
If you get a bug where you cannot change any settings in joystick, just close steam and reopen. Your changes will be made so revert any you made that aren't what you want
W video. I asked in your chat for you to make this video. Not sure if it's a coincidence or if you saw the chat 😂❤
Ive gotten too many requests hahah
Had to do it 🙌
I wish there was a pros and cons list of cross vs square for in game purposes.
Very good tutorial, now I don't have double inputs with ds4 windows anymore
Looool
0.20 is a good start, there is not a big difference imo
watch my cancels tutorial
and in my deadzone and sens tutorial I explain in a section why pros dont use square or high deadzones
@@Maktuf thanks for your answer I watched it but I'll rewatch it again
thanks mak and chese

What about square dead zones for modern warfare 3?
This is a video about rocket league why would you expect him to answe this
helloooo maktuf can you help us fix it where our keyboard input keeps interfering with the controller input??
*it’s happening after we put square deadzone*
yeah exactly
12:47 so that template isn’t there for me what do I do I tried it with the original template but when I ran rl my controls are all crazy b making me do ball cam lol I watched the vids you put up since I have rl only on epic . Help! Please 🙏
Check the pinned message haha
@@Maktuf there’s no community ones popping up tho?
@@Maktuf so what I’m guessing is the keyboard controls are combined with the controller settings any idea what you think I could do?
Thanks you so much for this video! Really great, it helped myself! I have seen some pro aving circle Deadzone(Joyo and Daniel). What is the avantage of this one?
can u do a settings video for the steam controller settings u currently use i really wonna give it a try but im not sure if anything is wrongly set
i got a problem, after some days of using square deadzone for epic, everytime i load into steam and launch rl, my b button boosts and jumps at the same time, and idk how to change that
You ever find a fix?
With steam, you have to change to legacy controls. He mentioned it in the video, and the comment section.
@@JaydoS123I don't know what Legacy bindings are, but I was able to fix the issue with jumping when I press LT (left trigger) and boosting when I press RT (right trigger), or tabbing out, or other unexpected keyboard inputs you might be experiencing.
Go to Steam Settings > Controller > Scroll down to "Non-Game Controller Layouts" and select Desktop Layout > Edit > Edit Layout
Once you're here you can change most of the controller inputs on keyboard to "none". For some reason you can't do that for the right bumber, so I changed that one to left shift because that's what the kbm equivalent is when I looked at my controller bindings within Rocket League itself.
Hope this helps!
Maktuf do you maybe know how much anti deadzone and Max zone pros are using for cross deadzone on ds4windows? Or what would you recoment me for ps5 controller for Competitive
Im on keyboard, but still watching.
Cross deadzone is the same as square u just cant control fromt and back cancels diagonally
Everything else you can do.
Ye
You can be really good with free airroll
Watch MK, Bork and other players
But still they cant do some mechanics and movements that are very simple with DAR to make. The skill ceiling is just higher with DAR so thats why I recommend it
@@Maktuf yeah I totally agree, hopefully my performance with DAR can catch up to where I'm at with NAR one day, also great video btw!
Where can I find the Legacy thing? 12:52
yup now my controller is completely screwed isnt working properly and is boosting when driving forwards jumping when reversing and i cant use the joystick to move through menus what do i do
ur binds are modified make sure u have the psyonix legacy thingy, cause that was my issue as well, if that doesn't work idk ur cooked
@ReC.e I have the same problem, and what is happening is steam is messing up the controls so you want to close steam when you play rocket league on epic
@zoronoa15but wouldn’t that remove the square deadzone layout?
What are the best keybinds you suggest for ranked with the dedicated air roll?
Can you do the video where u explain every settings ?
right click on the game > properties > controller > enable steam input
When I click on the Deadzone Type, it just doesn't let it happen anyone know why?
restart u pc when u load steam imput
I required the video of making the square zone feel like crossdeadzone. I been playing with a while again and it feels ways loose when aerialing.
I tried increasing the controller deadzone but somehow it starts killing the diagonals. The way I test it is on the pre matches for tourny and make the car spin with nose on the ground. Which I couldnt do which cross deadzone.
Are there any disadvantages to square dead zone?
Maktuf, what specific mechanics would you use square deadzone for? im trying to learn helis, but square deadzone makes it harder for me to stall. I can usually stall all the time, but now im kinda struggling and idk if its worth the switch
thank you goat
What about Bork? He used free air roll and he was good! No offense though. I use it as well and I’m good at it but how would it be hard to use it with square deadzone and freestyling? I have 600 hours with it and I’ve hit 6 resets and missed the shot
@@PuIseZxck I never said he wasnt good
he is cracked, but still limited in the amount of mechanics he can do.
there are other great players that use normal airroll like DLG who has the longest airdribble time for example.
Square deadzone also has nothing to do with free airroll hahah swuare deadzone has everything to do with flip cancels. You can watch my latest video to see what I mean
@@Maktuf oh okay thanks! Also, if you don’t mind could you name so more free air rollers. I know there is BonaRL however, I’m trying to research about more of them so I can get good at it and leave a bunch of tutorials for the next free air rollers.

What is the difference between “square stick” and axial dead zone in ds4 windows. You didn’t mention the dead zone type tab in ds4 windows app
yo man, i cant right click on the rocket league in steam bcs im on epic games, even if i have epic on steam

How do I get the officialy layout thing pls answer someone 😢❤
I couldn't see if anyone else had mentioned in the comments but I wanted to ask your opinion on using the steam controller configuration settings over using the native controller inputs RL has. I've tried to go back to steam config after switching it off ages ago and I cant even control a dribble properly because of the muscle memory difference. Obviously using steam you'll be getting input latency, but is that a tradeoff that is worth having a square deadzone for?
Insane
what do you do if it doesnt give you the option to get the official layout for rocketleague thing? :(

Idk why but it does not flip right for me. sometimes ill go in the complete opposite direction im holding and I dont get why.

Are you playing from the epic launcher? If so, are you running steam in the background? If yes, there's a setting on steam that is doing that. I forget which one it is but it's what caused it for me. Or, you could just leave steam signed out and closed

Durazno link is down :( Someone have the folder?

my BT connection has massive lag spikes when using the ds4win guide for some reason. Using usb cable fixed it but I don't understand why changing the deadzone would make the BT connection unstable. I have tried 1-4ms polling
oh ye definitely avoid bluetooth
it gives you so much input lag
if you can get a long cable
it will make everything easier
@Maktuf bt can have lower input lag compared to usb if you increase rolling rate. 1ms vs 4ms on usb, I've read . But the main issue I have with usb is that the connection becomes loose after a while so the cable just drops off randomly.
