    About 5 or 6 years ago the walmart I work in started carrying these, 99% of the ones we sold came back in less than a week, they do not really work. As someone else pointed out, the filters tend to grow mold and you wind up spraying mold everywhere with this thing, not a good thing if you are using it in a humid area. This thing is a glorified humidifier.

    • @niccimartinez6467
      @niccimartinez6467 2 года назад +16

      Yes! Was about to say the same thing. I work at Walmart in claims and we get so many returned! Such a waste.

    • @kittymervine6115
      @kittymervine6115 2 года назад +15

      so is this why it says, DO NOT RETURN TO STORE?? Because the item still wants to be carried by the store? But we can really return it to the store? Walmart is usually fairly good about returns, but if I can't return an item, I'm not going to purchase it. There is a South African AC that you make yourself from a styrofoam cooler a plastic pipe and a small fan, you fill the cooler with ice and put the fan blowing IN and a pipe sticking OUT, which will blow cool air on you. Much cheaper and easier to clean!

      Ok we don't have air conditioning. It has been 90-100 here. Too hot to sleep. I have a cheaper version and yes it's just like a fan/ humidifier. I pointed it straight on me in bed. Just a fan. Big disappointment!

    Fun fact, evaporative air coolers work best in dry climates. For people looking to get one in a humid climate, it won't do much for you since it works by adding humidity into the air.

    I’ve had mine for about two months and I love it! I haven’t had an issue with mold in the filter because I clean the filter weekly. But for the most part I don’t even freeze the filter. I just put ice and cold water in the water basin and it works just fine! Definitely worth the $40!

    • @splashthefly9039
      @splashthefly9039 2 года назад

      Yeah, mine is two years old and it doesn't grow mold. It isn't black anywhere. I do let it dry outside of the fan thing, so maybe that's why.

  • @TahoeMama.
    @TahoeMama. 2 года назад +33

    I actually owned one. The filters do grow mold pretty quick I guess it's because water is involved sometimes. Some have the option to turn the light off, but mine didn't. Not that it was a problem for me, but I know the option to have it be able to turn off would be good. Especially at night when one would like the room dark. I own the neck fan they make, and they seem to do pretty good

    Yes in New York we use air conditioners if our houses don’t have central air and we use space heaters in if we don’t have central heating. So we have to accommodate for the heat in the summer (which is a humid, sticky, thick heat) and cold in the winter (it can get below 0° especially up by the lakes)

    My coworker and I made one of these out of a beer cooler and PVC pipe and a tiny little fan. We cut a hole in the top of the cooler put the little fan and that we cut out and then we place the PVC pipe with the curve in it. Then we fill the cooler with ice and water and plugged it in! We called it our redneck air conditioner and we used it for five years. It was awesome. And it cooled our entire office.

    I got one of these as a review product and I took it on a trip to Wisconsin.. I was very happy with the product because it allowed me to have a refreshing sleep and not be in a stuffy room.. I will say however that it is basically a fan and a humidifier and I had a towel under it to collect all the water vapor, so the likelihood of mold is high if you would be continually using it.

    There's a lot of old homes in the states and they usually have no AC because its very expensive to add to an old home, or people are just renting, or they don't want to destroy original architectural features in the home to add air conditioning. So usually window units or portable ac units are used but that can make the electric bill very expensive.

    These work by condensation, so they’re more effective in dryer climates. You should clean the filters with a bit of 3% peroxide to keep mold from forming.

    • @StijnNLDutch
      @StijnNLDutch 2 года назад +1

      But isn’t it ineffective then? Cause if you wanna cool down you need to bring down the humidity. The more humid the warmer it will feel. Thats why ac’s work much better cause they also dehumidify.

    • @bjrnsrensen8456
      @bjrnsrensen8456 2 года назад +1

      @@StijnNLDutch Not in dryer climates because the air isn’t saturated with water vapor, so the moisture being added to the air has a cooling effect. In humid climates, these things are useless.

It’s def not going to cool down a large space though, I basically keep it pointed directly at me when I’m sleeping. In San Francisco the rental homes usually don’t have air conditioning and the same in Southern California along the coast, central California is 112-115 in summer at the hottest so we all have air conditioning here! But I’ve tried that little fan thing your testing and it’s not worth the trouble!

    I can't wait until the weather gets cooler I can't stand this heat here where I live in Georgia. I have so many cute outfits to wear when it gets down to 60's degrees. I have a window air conditioner in my room and I have a small heater for me and my pug Noah when the weather gets really cold at night. It would be really good for you or your family if they owned an RV Motorhome or Travel Trailers RV and go out camping.

    I had a version of that and i ran it all night and it cooled the room 3 degrees maybe. Also they act like a humidifier amd blew water through the vents...it was one of the first models that came out. I used it mostly for white noise at night. It died after 2yrs of use.

    I never saw the infomercial or anything, but my husband bought this for me cause I always complain about how hot I am. 🤣 But we ended up bringing it with us on vacation and thank goodness we did because the AC in the cabin automatically turned off at night and it was SO HOT. With the ceiling fan on and with this "portable AC unit" running, it didn't make a difference. This thing just gets water everywhere and doesn't really cool. 🤣 It's just a wet fan if you sit in front of it.

    I live in Flagstaff, AZ (near the Grand Canyon) and for the most part, people don't have AC. Certainly not in most apartments and even at NAU, the dorms don't have AC. This is mostly because up until the last few years we haven't really needed it because it would get to the high 80s and only for a few days but Summers are getting hotter and more people are adding it to their pre-existing homes.

    I have some other version of this I think? But all of them are the same idea, a teeny tiny swamp cooler. Mine has just a little flap on top that hinges open vs the whole thing coming off. I fill that part with ice and freeze the filter. It's not strong enough to cool a whole room in my opinion but it's enough to keep inside my bunk bed (the foot end and one side are against a wall and the head isn't very open so I kind of have a little cave) I've seen comments about mold, but I've never had an issue with that. I rinse my filter every day with super hot water, and if it's in the machine or freezer I keep it in open air. And mine cycles through the light colors automatically, that's the only mode it has. But I like the cycling and the light it just bright enough to see so I won't trip if I have to get up in the night but it's not too much that it forces me all the way awake like a regular light would do. Overall I like it :)

    My husband and I bought one from Amazon (we live in south fl) 1000% does not work in the summer, unless you’re right in front of it. We use it when we go camping or the beach in our car. (Hatchbacks are the best cars! 😉☺️)
    Edit: when I lived in northern Arizona they don’t have AC, mostly AC units.

    Swamp coolers are what is used to cool homes in Southern California. They work really good 👍 I lived in the high desert for about ten years and never thought about needing an a/c.

    Growing up in Upstate New York older homes do not have central air/heat. So pretty much in the summer you're dragging out window ac units and pulling them back out in the winter. Needless to say I'm spoiled with central air now in Tennessee 😂😂

    Where I'm at in Wa state most places don't have central air. Gotta buy a unit for the days where it is 80 and up. In all fairness we rly only get 2 or so mo ths of 90 degree weather. Past couple yrs we've have like a week or two of 100 degree weather tho. They set up "cooling stations" in public buildings sometimes.

    OK sooo, I have 2 of the artic air ultras. I will say this, it won't replace an air conditioner for sure. But! But but but, I have one on my side of the bed and my husband has one on his side of the bed. It works better for us than the desktop fan we also have. We just keep it clean and fill with fresh water. When you are just relaxing on the bed and reading or working or sleeping, it definitely keeps us cool. We live in Tennessee with a tin roof and it gets pretty warm in our area. (not like in Texas for sure) but it works for us

    Native Californian here-most coastal towns (except for the warmer coastal towns like San Diego/Laguna Beach) don’t have air conditioning because the temperatures rarely get above 85 and at nighttime it cools off quickly. But everywhere else, AC is a given. CA also gets triple digit temps summers. Maybe not as hot as Texas, but still hot 🥵

    In Oregon and parts of Washington state it’s very common for apartments to not have ac. In fact a couple years back we had a 3 day heatwave of 115 in Oregon it killed almost 100 people because not everyone has AC here. When it gets super hot like that they have to open up cooling centers here just so people have a place to go.
    Here in Oregon I hear more homes have AC now that come standard, and that’s for about 80% of homes here approx. I don’t remember where I heard that though.

    I live in southern Colorado and I have never seen a home here that has built in air conditioning (central air?!) We have to buy the portable air conditioners or the ones you install in the windows. I have one that's on wheels and I've never had one like this that actually works as good as the one I have now does. But days like today, it wasn't really doing as much as I wanted it to!! It was super hot today though. Prolly laughable compared to your guys temperatures, but for us folks, it was pretty hot! Now it's pouring rain yay!! Love you bunny. I hope all is well your way! Take care ma

    Some apartments here in Arkansas don’t have central heat and air instead they have window units with a A/C in them. Luckily I live in a apartment with central heat and air. But 4 years ago I did live inside a apartment that had a window unit and it was in the living room it sucked so much because during the winter the window unit didn’t produce enough heat to heat up the entire apartment.

    When I worked at burger king and they had me in the booth in the summer I would get 2 buckets off ice and I'd put it in front of my fan and it would get pretty cool in my booth, that's kinda like what this device reminds me of

    I live in Upstate New York in Saratoga County. I don't have central air in my townhouse but I have a window air conditioner in my room and one in my niece's room. I also need a fan blowing on me all of the time! We just use a fan downstairs. This has been the hottest summer since I moved in 3 years ago.

    The arctic chill works as a personal air conditioner if you are in a pinch…..absolutely wouldn’t replace an air unit AND the ice filter melts and will leak. Make sure you put a towel down on whatever table you set it on!
