  • Avoiding confrontation and engaging pupils personally can be both challenging and rewarding, as behaviour expert John Bayley demonstrates in this practical pedagogy resource for secondary and newly qualified teachers (NQTs).

It was great to see the comments take effect so quickly. I agree that some level of personality and kindness is important, alongside firmness.

I think Bayley may have been a little harsh with the teacher in the beginning alluding to "Who is this character at the front of the class" when talking to this conscientious individual. It would make me feel very insecure having to answer such a loaded question. I have seen women teachers get away with much worst behaviour while not getting the stare of death from the headmaster Bayley. While teaching is more and more being dominated by women, I do believe that there is still a place for more regimented male perspectives in teaching. I thought that he was an excellent teacher (at least by explaining the purpose of the lecture - "some people get jobs proofreading") who only needed a few tweeks and not a major overhaul as Bayley might have been suggesting with his comment. That being said a bit friendlier engagement with the students at the beginning and throughout the class might go miles into solving any residual issues.
