    After a weekend of free rides to crowds of people and many others turned away, today begins the first weekday of regular service on the new CT rail Hartford Line, with Amtrak and commuter rail service operating between New Haven, Hartford, and Springfield, MA.
    CT rail is using push-pull equipment from the Shore Line East pool as well as surplus MBB coaches leased from the MBTA to operate the service. Amtrak continues to use their normal Amfleet and Metroliner cab cars on the Shuttle trips, which are incorporated into the CT rail schedules.
    Video was shot on this first weekday in Meriden, with the following trains:
    Amtrak 451 - at Meridan station
    CT rail 4452 - at the S. Colony St/E. Main St crossings
    Amtrak 141 - at the S. Colony St/E. Main St crossings
    CT rail 4401 - at the S. Colony St/E. Main St crossings
    CT rail 4454 - at Meridan station
    Amtrak 471 - at the Cross St crossing

    I like that ConnDot kept the Black White and Red scheme on the Bombardier coaches as a holdover from the NH RR along with the GP 38 NH McGuiness

    1:06 that's the shortest train I've seen with a rebuilt metroliner cab car! I thought they were all used on the Keystone corridor!
    2:22 that's a nice K5LA!
    2:42 I wonder if locomotives in the New Haven livery will be common on this line?
    6:03 that horn sounds like it's from a modern Australian locomotive!
    8:39 do the cab cars have old Alco bells?

      The cab cars are used on both the Shuttles and the Keystone services.
      The New Haven livery is going away... all the locomotives, including the Metro-North pool units, are to eventually wind up in the new CTrail scheme.
      Nope, they aren't old Alco bells... those were new with the cars. MARC cab cars have the same bells.

    The Amtrak P40s are showing their age. I don’t imagine they’ll get a repaint before retirement. On the other hand, the CTrail P40s look great. Can’t beat the McGinnis livery. That’s about the only good thing Pat McGinnis brought to the NHRR.

    • @trainman1971
      @trainman1971  5 лет назад +2

      There is not even a timetable set for testing them on SLE yet. Things have to wait until the additional M8 order is delivered, since every car in service now is needed to handle Metro-North's ridership needs.

      @trainman1971  5 лет назад +3

      M9's can not run under catenary. They are third-rail only. Nothing obsolete about them.
      The M9's will be replacing the M3's on LIRR and the M3a's on Metro-North, and provide fleet expansion for both railroads. Technologically, they will have the same features as the M8's except for being third-rail only.

    Does Amtrak plan to stop shuttle services then?

    • @trainman1971
      @trainman1971  5 лет назад +2

      No. The shuttle services will not only continue, but are integrated into the CTrail schedule for number of trains on the line, and the shuttles accept CTrail tickets.

    • @beanovids2342
      @beanovids2342 5 лет назад

    • @trainman1971
      @trainman1971  5 лет назад +1

      Amtrak continues the shuttles as part of the national network, as each shuttle has a designated NEC connecting train for continuing riders. Service was always going to be a mix of the two services.

      No, operating crews. It's like how Amtrak has the CDOT contract to operate Shore Line East trains New Haven to New London, while Metro-North crews run the SLE trains between Hew Haven and Stamford.
      In this case, some private outfit (I forget the name but they are affiliated with Herzog) got the contract to provide crews for the Hartford Line trains.

      CT Rail is responsible for the stations, however, just as the commuter agencies up and down the NE Corridor are responsible for their stations along Amtrak's NEC, which they do not own either. Nothing wrong at all with their logos being on the signs.
