“You do not have to do all the reading on the reading list” I NEEDED to hear that 😆 I truly thought Oxford gave me 80% of everything ever written on Victorian Literature in the first couple weeks, and then there somehow just kept being more hahah. It’s kinda amazing though!
The reading lists are so amazing! They provide everything and anything you need to be able to explore a number of areas in the research field but it doesn’t mean you need to read it all! Definitely focus on the primary texts and then some of the secondary texts
Hi Cait - you are highly skilled at elucidating on the process of reading and synthesizing information. I watch you to help me teach my students as many of them are mature students and did not have the benefit of learning these kinds of thinking in their earlier education. You also make me want to do a literature course haha
Chiming in on the endless reading lists - generally, UK universities will have a reading list set. That is not a compulsory reading - it is a starting point and the 'approved' relevant literature suitable for the assignments on the course. Took me a while to figure that one out - but I emerge from the other side :D
A text with marginalia is awesome. Going back and reading your notes from 30 years ago is an interesting experience. Make sure you keep them. Taking an interdisciplinary view of a text is nothing new. Good luck with your study of the FQ. I would be interested to see if you think Spencer's portraral of women changes as the books progesses since it is such a large work. Dont get too hung up on software. Remember, it is a tool and not a crutch. Great work can be done with pen and paper. It is your process that is important. Good luck.
7:30 no way, i didn't know you could that, I usually just rip the passages I like with my bare hands, it's messy and ruins the book but it gets the job done!
Can United States students do this Oxford literature degree since it seems most of his online? I was reading that you have to go to summer school there for at least a couple weeks. Is there anyway around that? For the Shakespeare.
Absolutely! There are plenty of US students in my cohort, but that’s for the Masters. I think what you’re looking at is the Undergraduate Certificate and I believe you will need to go to Oxford for a week for the Shakespeare week but they might allow this to be online if there are reasons that someone can’t travel. For the Masters, you would need to travel to Oxford for a week every term
