Troubleshooting a Fuse Popping, No Start, Crank, or Lights Yamaha Grizzly

  • I've had this Yamaha Grizzly 600 for awhile, the failed CDI pulse generator was replaced and with a remote ignition system it started, ran, and drove up to where it currently sits. Unfortunately, the electrical issues were not isolated to the pulse generator, the entire 12V system is dead! This ATV pops the main 20A fuse, it has no spark from the onboard CDI system, does not crank, and none of the lights illuminate. We will begin the troubleshooting at the battery and then work on isolating the short.

As the inventor of OCD thanks in no part to my stern Catholic School upbringing, the dream that this would be over someday kept me going. I try to follow these lessons the best I can and some of it is fine but I'm glad you're at the helm captain. Keep rolling Harvey

I think your problem is a heated hand grips if I was you I would run a jump wire to the main red wire up where are your key switch . Or trace the power and see were it stops there's were the problem is. Love your videos keep them coming. Your fellow repair friend Tony

Harvey , why are some people’s comments so mean ? I just don’t understand them ! Maybe you could shed some light on that ! I remember you and I got off on the wrong foot in the beginning and it was my fault because I was getting frustrated and not hearing answers I thought I needed to hear to fix my ATC problem ! Carry on pal , your ACES in my book !

Appreciate this video alot man been restoring one thats sat for a long time and everything was going in good direction until this happened, watched many videos and none helped until watching this I went out and messed with some of the wiring and now everything works again idk what i did but hopefully it stays good until I can take the whole quad apart for paint etc and really find the issue seems to be the wiring!

The resistor may be used with a five pin relay to hook the cooling fan directly to the battery or put the fan in series with the resistor for a lower speed. Older yamaha 4 wheelers had two wires that look like they plug together but once this is done it will blow fuses like that. So sometimes when people poke around looking for the real problem they plug these together and create a second issue These used to be about where your right thigh would sit under the plastic. Not sure on the newer machines. Hopefully there isn't a ecu on that machine because that just makes life hard. 👍👍

Once we had a starter relay melted, and grounded to the frame. We actually ruined a new battery before we found it. We looked everwhare.

I bet the resistor is for the heated hand grips, I have dealt with those.

Hi Harvey! Thanks for your great videos. These helped a lot with my Honda 3 and 4 weels. Fiew weeks ago i bouth a grizzly 600, my first Yamaha ever. just like yours. I had a fireing problem i solved with a new stator and pulse coil, thanks for that too. I could not engage the front differentiel so i found out that the servo motor unit control did not work, i ordered a new one, and when i was putting the new one in place: i found out that the "flat gear'', where the motor has 2 teeth missing (broken). I ordered a front diff. on ebay witch cost less then the bar with teeth.
My question is: there is 3 positions possible: one for 2x4, then 4x4 by hitting the red button on handle bar. switch only can be 2x4 or 4x4. Then to lock front diff. ??? Thanks again Harvey.

I'll correct myself, I invented ADD not OCD, Between the boredom of trying to memorize things that served no purpose and the violence and humiliation served out by the nuns when you didn't comply were enough to scar you for life. When my neighbor got tired of getting his face slapped, he raised his hand and blocked the shot, only to get expelled immediately. Good times!

Good luck bud I've been there before with a Polaris had the same issue turns out the circuit breaker needed to be cleaned I had the same exact problem no lights couldn't judge the electric start I know would Polaris if the stator ain't putting continuity it wouldn't even start I would say check your circuit breaker but it looks like the wiring is a hack job

I have a Yamaha Bruin ultamatic. I was riding it and it just died. Battery and fuse good. The only light that comes on is the one from 2to4 wheel drive. Headlights work but no neutral light and won’t turn over. Any idea?

I have the exact problem on my 1999 Yamaha Kodak 400. The atv runs with the pull start, but I have NO electrical (lights, e start, cooler fan) so this is causing it to over heat. Did you ever discover what the problem was? Thx.

Ok mine is doing this exact thing but everything turns on it just blows the fuse when I turn the key like I'm super confused because b4 I replaced the battery it would crank just fine no problem put a new battery in and it won't do anything so could it be that the battery I bought was junk?

In my Ed-u-ma-cated opinion I believe it’s the thing a ma bob hooked up to the watch a ma call it there 4 the woozie what’s it is interfering with the planets gravitational pull on the level of the blinker fluid ! So in SHORT it’s worse then a bag of spaghetti ! Lmao ! I think it’s a short in the starter solenoid but your educated guess is far better then mine my friend ! But if you read the comments EVERYONE has there opinion as to what’s wrong so keeping with the crowd that was mine ! And guess what ...... it’s free ! Lol

What about if you blow the fuse only when the key switch is off. When the key is off my quad has negative continuity flowing to the fuse making the fuse complete the circuit and blow the fuse.
