Were the townspeople turned into these horrible beings before or after Dr. Cromwell left? What happened to Dr. Cromwell? Unanswered questions. This is one of the darkest episodes to the show.
Populated an entire town with Frankenstein worthy creations ranging from near perfect to more grotesque than the original version, Cromwell must've looted more graves and morgues than there are skeletons in the cryptkeeper's closet

The animation, music, and voice acting took an already morbid idea and made it into pure, unbridled horror.
I agree. The implication of Klump's demise in a kids cartoon show like this is disturbing and very creepy. In the live action version, they probably would've shown Klump being dragged right back to the creatures' house and tortured, and then perhaps cut to when he's shown with the stitches on his neck when talking to guys of the town at the end. Yet, there's something about not showing the action and implying it adds more of an impact on the story.
It is like the H.P. Lovecraft quote "The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown." which the ending shown this perfectly. It leaves your imagination to wonder about what they really did to him, even when showing his stitches.

The Mario Bros. have been trying to defeat King Koopa for years but, it looks like Cromwell's creations succeeded. Honestly wish they would have left the Old Witch and the Vault Keeper out of the show. I found them to be so annoying.
Can't say for his more recent movies,but the ones they showed us at the time certainly seemed to be. They showed us the film more or less as a way to say that the facts can be manipulated and media can be a powerful tool. And this idea was further explored when we watched the final season of the Wire.
