I do believe that in episode 12 when Boros tells Saitama that “he was too strong.” Instead of feeling pity for boros, we should pity Saitama. As the theme of One Punch Man is that Saitama cannot find an opponent to satisfy his wants for a real fight. But Saitama is just “too strong”

The final moments of Boros were supposed to make you realize something.
Saitama saw himself in Boros, someone who had grown so strong that fights weren’t exciting anymore. Boros, like Saitama, was searching for the fight that would exhilarate him once more. That’s why Saitama didn’t fight back for a majority of the fight. He was trying to give Boros the exciting fight he had been searching for.
In the moment before Boros unleashed his final move, his heartbeat sounded off just like Saitama’s did during his dream in episode 1. Boros was finally excited during a fight for the first time in who knows how long. Saitama realized this, and out of respect for Boros, unleashed his “killer move” as well.
During Boros’s final moments, he realized that Saitama was trying to help him re-discover that exhilaration he was looking for.

Sort of like the survivor guilt many suffers with because when the chips were down they were too scared to play, he was willing to pay with no guarantee other than maybe something good will come from it. Most stories show the growth and development of the hero, showing him building his strength. OPM is different -- Saitama is already basically the most powerful thing in the universe (which comes into play many many chapters later). For him the challenge is in trying to feel the thrill of a fight again, like he did in the dream sequence of the first episode. So the growth and development is mostly in the characters around him. Saitama is the Deus In Machina. The challenge for the writers is to keep the other heros and population in the dark about his abilities.

He didn't do anything, only showing up after the threat was removed and then critisized all of the other heroes who responded and made the effort. Him being the top of his class makes him a gatekeeper, but the only one to benefit from that his him. If he moved up to class S, it would give others a chance to grow. "Gatekeep" is not an oficial title or responsability as part of the hero association, it is something that he does to satisfy his own ego. S class heroes do not need him to do that. Ok, two things: 1) The basis of the story from the writer is what happens if the main character in a manga starts as strong as a hero would be at the end of a manga. Ultimately the story is about his struggles with having no challenges, as well as the stories of the side characters. A really important part that a lot of people miss though, is how he treats others. Even folks who get their butts kicked before he shows up, he supports, cheers them on and gives them praise. He ACTS like a hero to heroes.
    2) The house of evolution scientist in the manga does give a kind of explanation of why saitama is as strong as he is. It involves a bit of a scientific explanation I'm going to summerize but basically, when humans exercise, we get stronger by getting close to our limit, ripping our muscles, which grow back stronger. (In other words, no pain no gain is legit. If you stop exercising because you are starting to hurt, you basically wasted your time because those painful periods are where you're actually going to get stronger, to a point). However, humans generally have a limit to how strong they can get in a period of time, which is why the fitter you are the longer and harder you need to exercise for lower and lower gains. There's diminishing returns.
Saitama doesn't have that restriction. Something about his body makes it so he is 'always' getting stronger every time he moves. The act of breathing is in fact making him just a little bit stronger. It's why his routine made such a difference to him, that wouldn't have had the same effect on a regular person. Basically, like how saiyins get stronger whenever they get hurt, he gets stronger just for existing. He's goku cubed.

The premise sounds ridiculous at first but the story architecture of One punch man is simple and brilliant. A lot of people are accustomed to the idea that for a TV show to be successful it needs to have a mind twisting brain puzzling storyline but OPM is just the story of a really strong hero who can defeat anyone with One punch this leaves the audience with so many question. You may not realize this but you guys were just wondering what will happen if OPM punches himself or is there a villan who can't be killed by one punch(which there is actually a villan that takes OPM multiple punches to defeat). Anyway the show just shows the average daily life of different characters it really doesn't need anything subliminal or foreshadowing.

    • @spamhere1123
      @spamhere1123 Год назад +3

It's more than that. See, most of these hero stories are the journey to the point where the hero gets super strong. OPM is what happens when you already arrive there, and guess what, he's bored out of his mind.
Ultimately, the conflict of OPM is far more esoteric than most direct "hero vs. villain" stories--it's really not about the monsters or the villain leagues or the fate of the world, etc. Those are all just the window dressing. It's about things like depression, trying to find purpose in a mundane life, is it more important to enjoy your job or be doing a job that helps others, and other more, well, down to earth topics that ONE (the author) is so good at addressing. Things that a office worker would think about. The thoughts you have while staring at the salad dressings in the grocery aisle, or while doing dishes, or while trying to study for a test.
Superheroes that can fracture the planet and villains that threaten all life on earth? Not the point of the story, really. Ultimately, we know those are the problems that are dealt with, or will be as soon as Saitama sets his sights on them. But that's not the conflict of the story. Saitama's life story is far more prosaic.

    1. Literally second half of the saitama vs boros fight happened on the roof of the ship (means outside) and no one from the heroes realized or heard that there is a battle going on like crazy? Imo you have to be deaf to kinda miss that.
    2. Saitama's travelling back from moon. I know this may not strike to many people but he seemed like he came back to earth almost instantly after getting kicked to moon (lets ignore the fact that he didn't just explode from holding his breath). But the thing is if he did, he literally travelled at speed of light to travel back to earth since light takes 1.3-1.5 seconds (as far as I remember). This feat itself sets him at an unreachable bar in opm universe (like I said saitama's power is absurd).
Great reaction video. Hope to see more.

Also why did saitama break out from the ship at the end near tatsumaki’s location? Wasn’t he already on top of the ship as he was walking away from a dying boros?? Power Scaling doesn't seriously apply to comedy series either though. It's fun to imagine how things can go within OPM universe, but it's significantly less interesting to think about ever putting him up against anyone else from another series. Generally when you power scale it's between less powerful characters that are somewhat close. There probably isn't anyone in another series that could beat Saitama just because of how ridiculous they animate his feats. Like the strongest form of Goku can't do half the crap Saitama does because the people animating Dragonball were never as talented as the people animating OPM S1.
It's kinda like an unspoken law. It's more fun to think of something like Dan from street fighter versus batman or something closer to that level than it is Superman versus goku or something close to that level. It's never been considered fair though when you throw characters like Popeye into the mix because he's very much an equivalent to Saitama. He's over exaggerated to the absolute highest extreme they could imagine at the time for comedy purposes.

The series is interesting because it's not a typical superhero story. For everyone else is typical hero / badguy stuff. But for Saitama is his journey of life and regaining his "humanity." It's the reason for art style change. When he looks all dumb it's due to a lack of feeling and boredom. It's only when he is excited that they draw him serious, because he himself is taking it serious.
They touch on it more as the anime/Manga progress. But just because you say your the strongest doesn't mean you are, there are definitly bigger threats out there. The fights are entertaining but the drama surrounding Saitama is masterclass. Can't wait for you guys to watch the rest.

Late to the party, but here's something nobody seems to mention. The city that Saitama lives and fights in is a mostly abandoned city called "Z-City" (cities are just named after alphabets in the OPM universe). Z City is known as Ghost City because it has become mostly abandoned by people throughout the years due to the greatest increase in mysterious creatures/villain population in the world being seen appearing on this city. It's like a literal "hell hole" for a lack of a better term, due to how many and how often monsters pop up there. The upside to this is that if you are willing to take the risk yourself, you are allowed to freely live in the buildings in the city tax and rent-free and only have to pay for consumption stuff. This is why Saitama lives in that city. Because if you recall from the first episodes, he is jobless and has no stable income. Since his hobby is hero-ing, there is no lack of enemy encounters and he doesn't need to pay for rent. There's also the lack of people around that would become collateral damage, most of the time at least. Genos reinforces this fact because Genos insists on being a "Cyborg of Justice", and thus he will not destroy a town if it will cause deaths in innocent lives. And Genos fights freely in this city after using his life-detection sensors to scan for any would-be collateral damage.

Since Saitama broke that limit, his power exceeded that of gods.

What Saitama did to the meteor is not only break it apart but also kill a lot of its initial momentum. If not, even a single small piece from the break can still annihilate a city.
If a meteor of that size, with the momentum from space crash, not only city Z will be completely destroyed but the whole surrounding area. That is why there is a theory that meteor able to cause the dinosaurs to go extinct.

When I first encountered this series as a badly-drawn web comic I liked that the story starts when most mangas end. Usually they start weak and get stronger and stronger until they can punch universes into dust by the end… And that’s Saitama at the beginning of this story.
What now, now I’m overpowered and the world is nothing but starter-difficulty and no threat, it’s just no fun anymore.
And second, in any other manga/anime Genos would be the main character, but he consistently gets wrecked.
And nobody realises they’re secondary characters, everyone else is in a normal power-creep anime, all except for Saitama.
And at the end of the fight with Boros, in the English translation of the manga his last words were not ‘you had strength to spare’ they were ‘you never even bared your fangs’. I just found it more emotional myself, but it could just be me.

The reason for Saitama's insane power can be inferred from a lot of other things mentioned here in season 1 and in the season 1 OVAs (which you should also watch).
Crablante became a crab monster by obsessing over (and eating lots of) crab.
Super Custom YO649Z Mk. II (from episode 1) became a car monster by being obsessed over cars.
The Titan of the two brothers (also from episode 1) because a giant because of his own obsession with becoming strong, as well as his brother's obsession with giving him his wish.
Speed of Sound Sonic gained his speed because of his obsessive need to be the fastest and strongest and most skillful ninja alive.
And many others throughout the series became monsters and/or gained superpowers because of their overwhelming obsessions. It seems to be where most monsters and most superpowers come from. Their obsessive drive ends up breaking their humanity apart and mutating them, giving them powers (and for monsters, becoming nonhuman freaks).
Basically, Saitama became the most powerful being in the universe because of his obsession with becoming "the strongest hero." His obsession broke his humanity, mindscrewed his human emotions, shattered his natural limiter, and gave him nigh infinite strength, speed, and durability. But since he focused on his need to become "the strongest hero" specifically, in situations where he's not fighting enemies or showing others that he's incredibly powerful (because why be a hero if you can't flaunt it?), he can be bested by insignificant things, like the mosquito in episode 2. It's part of the series's humor, this insanely powerful being that gets humiliated by literal insects.

Not only that, I know that clones of myself would end up in basically a whole family and work to differentiate from each other and do their best to understand and take care of each other's mental health, since that is a major concern of mine even now.
