In 1983 Frank Reynolds had to take leave from ABC News for bone cancer surgery. David Brinkley was then at ABC in Washington hosting "This Week" and doing commentaries for WNT. He swore he'd never anchor an evening news program again. But he agreed to fill in for Reynolds for a few weeks. When it became clear that Reynolds wasn't going to return and Brinkley absolutely didn't want the job permanently, they brought in Peter Jennings from London.
