I met Bill Anders, Frank Borman and Jim Lovell serving on the USS Yorktown CVS 10 after recovery of Apollo 8. I was lucky enough to be Bill Anders orderly while on board. I recall he was promoted to Colonel while on board. L/Cpl G. Schauer, Marine Detachment. A very rememberable couple of days in my life. Sorry to hear of his passing.

The reading of Genesis from Apollo was one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard in my ears. Here's 3 guys not even knowing if you're gonna make it back to Earth. But thinking about the heavens and creation. And I've that brought tears to my eyes when I when I first heard it and I think it always. Will God bless them? God bless those men. One of my greatest privileges was to know Bill Anders -Apollo 8 astronaut and photographer of the iconic “Earthrise” photo.
As an 18 year old cadet, my roommate Greg Anders introduced me to his dad -always referred to as “the General”
Bill was an inspiring figure, and a quietly poetic astronaut.

I went with my family to visit the Air Museum at Skagit Airport on Friday. When we arrived around Noon - we saw a car with the license plate "P-51 Pilot" then when we got to the front the doors were all closed. A man came out and told us "We are closed today" we asked if they would be open the next day and we got a short "Probably not". I was very disappointed at the time but now, knowing what happened I'm heartbroken. Rest in Peace Mr. Anders, thank you for your service.

Well , he's one of the men from the superpowers who put excitement into my life growing up in working class Liverpool.
There was the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Woodstock and the moon landing where the space race and music never ended when I was 64 this month and saw an astronaut dead when so many had died before.
And I realised there were more who all fought in the skies above Vietnam where capital punishment was still part of injustice all over the world.

So sorry to hear the news of the death of William Anders, one of the first 3 people to travel to another world on what was the most dangerous mission so far ever undertaken - Apollo 8 had no lunar module that saved the Apollo 13 crew. He took the iconic Earth Rise photograph, still one of the most spectacular, beautiful and memorable photos ever taken. Now only 6 Apollo astronauts who travelled to the Moon are still alive - James Lovell of Apollo 8 and 13, Buzz Aldrin of Apollo 11; Fred Haise of Apollo 13: David Scott of Apollo 15: Charles Duke of Apollo 16 and Harrison “Jack” Schmidt of Apollo 17.
So many former astronauts have died recently - Walter Cunningham, Karol Bobko, Frank Borman, Ken Mattingly, Mary Cleave, Tom Stafford, Richard Truly and now Bill Anders. May they rest in peace, along with all other deceased astronauts, whose courage and dedication we admire and appreciate so much.
Bill Anders loved flying planes, and he died doing something he enjoyed so much. I am sure that is how he would have wanted to leave this world.
