Killing Cool Season Grasses Among Native Warm Season Grasses

  • Today I killed the cool season grasses growing amongst my warm season native grasses that are part of the oak savanna restoration. Very early in the spring and late in the fall, you can spray any grasses that are green with glyphosate, and be sure that you are only killing the weedy grasses. Of course this does not work if you have native cool season grasses planted, but that is why you wait until your warm season grasses are well established before planting any cool season grasses or forbs (broad leafed plants like wild flowers). Last year I missed both windows in certain areas, but this year I will be doing a lot of grass and small tree killing to catch-up. 😊
    Thank you for watching Planet Mojo and have yourself a great day!

      Thanks Larry! Glad to hear you are having a mild winter as well (it's cheaper 😉) We have had a very warm winter overall, and it will get to 72℉ today! (22.2℃). We can get freezes and/or snow all the way up to mid May, but I'll take this warm weather as it comes 😊 I'll be pruning most of this week 🌳Not a sign of rabbits. That was a very odd occurrence, and hopefully it will not happen again! I'll leave the tubes on until everything else greens-up and the soft bark is no longer a target.

    That buffalo grass came out real well. I hope the stuff you planted last year makes it!

    It looks like all of that buffalo grass you planted last year is growing very well! It will be very interesting to see that in its second year. Will you be replacing any lawn with buffalo grass at some point?

    • @PlanetMojo
      @PlanetMojo  6 месяцев назад +2

      I am hoping the buffalo grass does well this year, and doesn't die back like the stuff from the first year! Yes, we do plan to replace some of the lawn starting next year. We will start with the septic mound and see how that works. it will be nice to only cut the grass twice a year!

    Hard to believe it's winter there! When was the last time you had snow?

      It actually snowed a bit earlier this week, and there is some remnants along the road in the woods. We could get snow any time for the next month and a half, but from here-on-in it will melt right away. 💧😊

    Can you do this the other way around? I don't think so, but maybe there's a way?

      Unfortunately no, but if planned correctly, you can get a strong stand of both warm and cool season natives with this method. Once well established, it is very unlikely you will get invading pasture type grasses.

    That patch is looking really good! I planted a couple Panicum "Cheyenne Sky" last Autumn and they seemed to take well. Now it's just a waiting game to see if they come back up. The one area that I've chosen to really dedicate to the natives is going to be a chore since I'm swamped with spurge at the moment and it'll take time to kill that stuff off. But, if I can get the Carex pensylvanica to grow under the oak tree and the Panicum to take off in it's new home, I'll be happy. This spring, I'll be be mostly doing clean up on the invasives, but hope to get some Climbing Asters and Yaupon Hollies planted. Small bits here and there, as I can manage. Thanks for the inspiration.

      Thanks Three Rivers Forge! I believe I only have that one switchgrass in my entire restoration area, but I plan to add some here and there over the next few years. I'm focusing on the shorter grasses right now (side oats, blue grama, buffalo grass). I need to make the place more burnable, and the nurse grass is far too long! I have a ton of little pencil trees all over the place that I will need to snip and apply Tordon to. I need to get to a place where these little trees are killed in a burn, but that's going to take awhile. I have spurge in a few areas as well. I got rid of it in another patch with Triclopyr. It is not water based, but can be used with water if done correctly- otherwise 2,4-D should work. Are you planning to burn?

    This is so helpful. It's a problem I've dealt with over the years. So what will happen to forms that are starting to emerge like asters?
    Also, what affect will this have on seeds? I have seeded an area that still has lots of cool season grass trying to come up.

      Hi Jason! Anything green will die (or at least it should) when sprayed with glyphosate, and glyphosate has zero effect on seeds. In this area, I have found that warm season native grasses start waking-up anytime from the beginning of May - but it's usually min May. It's generally safe for me to spray through April, but I keep checking for green on the natives. I've found that warm season seeds generally start sprouting in mid June to late June, but a warm spring may speed that up. We are in SW Wisconsin. If you are in a similar climate things should be very similar. Feel free to ask any questions that come to mind 😊

      @PlanetMojo In kentucky the cool season grasses ars waking up now. Soil Temps are hovering in the upper 40s though and most warm season grasses don't start growing until early may. Some forbs are already putting out basal foliage though so I'll have to be careful. A few sedges stay evergreen so it won't help those areas.

      @@PlanetMojo So how long do you usually give it to see results? I sprayed Monday and on Thursday it's all still green.
