Comparing the sounds of two very similar guitars - both great instruments!
    1. 1987 GIBSON ES335 (dot reissue)
    2. 1981 IBANEZ AS100 (Artist)
Both guitars have their original pickups and are plugged directly into a Strymon Iridium (amp sim) with no other amp or effects (other than a bit of reverb). The settings were kept the same for both guitars.

The Ibanez sounds great. The 335 does sound great too though.

Sweet playing, both guitars sound and look great.
FWIW the AS seems quite a bit brighter and a more defined sound than the ES. Not sure why that should be although the AS weighs in at ~4.2kg, and seems to be about 0.6kg heavier than the ES with almost identical profile (except horns). Some research suggests that the timbers are different, AS/ES Bodies - Birch/Maple; fretboards - Ebony/ Rosewood; Centre blocks - Hard Rock Maple/ solid maple.
Surprised just how hot those Ibanez Super 58s pups sound given that they're described as low output Alnico III. Is your ES with the Tim Shaw HH (PAFs)?
Be interested to hear how you hear the sound differences and about the weight issue.
    Thanks for posting.

Thanks for your comments. I didn't particularly notice a weight difference - both guitars feel quite heavy compared with most of my guitars (solid body Fender-ish types). I think the 335 has the Tim Shaw pickups but I'm not absolutely certain.... regarding the sound difference, I actually prefer the neck pickup on the Ibanez, but the bridge pickup on the Gibson. I got the Ibanez recently (had the Gibson for 30+ years) and was blown away by the neck pickup!

@@onlineguitarteacher Agree AS neck pup is tasty indeed. Sweet spot seems to be 3mm below depressed strings. Great build quality. Have 1982 AS, only downside for me is weight and slightly tight/skinny neck at nut, but otherwise excellent, affordable ES alternative.

The Ibanez is much muddier than the Gibson. The Gibson crushed the Ibanez...

He's picking the strings on different distances from the pickups for each guitar. There is at least 3/4" difference in the picking locations. When he plays the Gibson in bridge position, he picks closer to the bridge pickup, and when he plays the Ibanez in bridge position, he picks closer to the NECK position.
      I wouldn't call that crushed, I'd call that a biased test. 😎
