I'm glad you were able to make it out to Brooklyn and Queens. If you're Irish and want to be around proper Irish pubs and generational New Yorkers, you can't beat Sunnyside/Woodside in Queens where the pubs get down to county specific decorations and patrons. If you want to be around a lot of transplants and hipsters with solid bars/clubs and a few decent Irish pubs, then any of the gentrified parts of Brooklyn would be the spot, although you'll be spending just as much on a hotel in BK as you would be in Manhattan.

Is the 'twang' taste in USA maybe because of different glass cleaning methods compared to Ireland/UK?
I always imagine everything American = more chemicals when compared to Europe!
Maybe try: cleaned (US method) used glass vs new(/used (washed with Irish method)) glass to see if it tastes different!

I'm often wrong, but I thought that the guinness in the USA was brewed in and exported from Ireland, whereas in all/most other countries it is brewed domestically and a "Guiness flavour extract", produced at St James Gate, is added. Maybe they brew a different formulation for export to USA (with the twang).... Here in New Zealand the Guinness in pubs from the keg is brewed domestically and doesn't seem to have the twang, while the widget cans which are imported from Ireland do have the twang.

Funny you went to Iona. I think the day I saw and commented on part 1 (Saturday the 19th?) I mentioned hoping that you'd come to Brooklyn. That night I went to the theater down the street and was going to stop into Iona to kill a half hour. It was 6:30pm and the place was too packed to enjoy myself, so I went straight to the cinema. That night we went to a bar called The West, then left and stumbled across an Irish bar, The Clonard, just a few doors down from the place we were planning to go. Wound up crashing what appeared to be an Irish wedding, but I think was just some girl's birthday. Lots of dresses and bowties. They were going to the bathroom in pairs and threes apparently doing lots of cocaine. For awhile I think we were the only Americans in the place.
