I was in the show in the late 70,s .they auditioned the kids at my school, st Paul's in Kingston upon thames. Think I did a year doing a couple nights a week and the odd matinee on a Saturday..I can still remember the Latin we sang in the requiem. It was David Essex Elaine Paige who starred. If my memory serves me right, I think we got £6 a week for what we did. I'm sure my parents spent it !!! Child labour !!!!😂.
David Essex gives one of his finest vocal performances as Che Guevara from the musical Evita, delivering 'Circus' with exactly the right blend of bitterness and tenderness. 'Salve Regina' - even the Latin bit sounded great!
@loriAlessiroberts118 In the show, the second time they sing the Latin bit, they change "Salve Regina" to "Salve Regina Peron". It means they are no longer praying _for_ her, but _to_ her.
Back in the day I always regarded David Essex as bit of a lightweight but his delivery of this song is top draw...it's a theatrical performance and works so well!
Another fantastic arrangement by the unsung musical legend, Mike Batt. This song still has the ability to make my hairs stand on end, even after years of listening to it. Mike has a knack of doing that, time and time again with his orchestration.
Chaz McCord . Oh yes those eyes, I went to see him for 10 consecutive years at Portsmouth guildhall and those eyes were amazing even from a distance. His voice was as good live as on record.amazing singer.
It is my darling mummy Gina's 70th birthday today which is what brings me here today. She was in love in David Essex. It is amazing what you will do for the one you love so much. I was only a baby during his music reign so i am not terribly familiar with his work sadly.
I saw “Evita” in London when it first opened. It starred Elaine Paige as Evita and David Essex as Che. Fabulous show, great music. David Essex never quite broke the market here in the US but he was a terrific performer and he put out some great records. Happy memories of London in the late 1970s.
Agreed! David Essex has that star quality: the ability to get 'inside' a song and make the words really talk. There are few other singers/actors who can match him. This remains the definitive interpretation of the song.
David Essex, nobody will ever be able to better this song after you, I love you and the song! I studied her whole existence in detail, I don't care what they say about her, she was a genius!
David Essex is like David Cassidy: much more than just a pretty face. Both, in my opinion are great singers and actors who, sadly, were unable to break away from their 'teeny bop' image. Thankfully later, George Michael managed to do just that and show us how great his talent was. I love all three of them, and I'm grateful I have seen all three perform.
I meet David Essex afew years ago when i bought David Essex book and had it signed by him he alovely man just love his music he is so talented I never went to see any of his performance ihave been a fan of his for years he is great at acting on stage and films ❤️⭐
I remember when this was a hit I used to play this record and wear my auntie's clothes. Skirt, stockings, big bloomers, high heels, blouse and wig. Great days!
Hold me close while you Rock on David under the Lamplights before Coming home when I'm Gonna make you a star for Emily... Bring in the Sun that it may go On and on like a Rolling stone under the City lights and if I could Cool out tonight... Turn me loose to the sound of Good Old Rock and roll in America... We are Stardust!
I've heard that this song was added as something of an afterthought, on the insistence of the producers: Andrew Lloyd-webber originally intended his musical to be much more pro-Peron.
He was the 1st che and the best . A bloody shame he isn't remembered for the none charty stuff . Still acting and touring today . 2024 tour coming up .
je constate que David Essex déchaîne les passions, positives et négatives. j'attends depuis 30 ans que justice soit faite à ce chanteur unique, séduisant, créatif, au style si particulier. Viva David !
David Essex was always a great actor. Even in his early pop songs he performed brilliantly to the camera. His voice is not very strong but he makes up for it by his presence.
David has never been given full credit for his talents, not well promoted on radio one, or other stations! I wrote into radio once Steve Wright several days later turned on radio to hear Steve Wright say David was star of the week (following week) hope your happy Gail! Yes l was!
David Essex as Che is as definitive in this role as Ian Gillan was on the original JCS album. You can never beat the original versions. Elaine Page will always be the best Evita, and Michael Crawford will always be the best Phantom.
Sorry, neither David Essex nor Elaine Paige were the originals. Colm Wilkinson and Julie Covington were the originals on the album. Neither was available to recreate their role on stage.
Never get into "Now 70's" on "Freeview"! I was watching this the other night...I mind being a bit of a fan when I was growing up, he was always on the telly and had a good voice and twinkle in his eye.
The show launched at the Prince Edward Theatre in the summer of 1978 and was of the hottest tickets in town. The other was the Two Ronnies Show at the Palladium where I was one of the stage management team. Ziggy was the on the SM team on Evita and I knew him from Rep. and I remember him getting me in to watch a matinee from the flies. You can't beat being in an original cast and it was very exciting time for everyone in the West End that year.
Thanks for uploading this. This is my favourite version of this powerful and thought provoking song. I drew alongside David Essex in a traffic jam on the Mile End Road once - I was quite chuffed !
Even in 2024 this is the very best version. Everything about it is brilliant.
After all these years this still rocks David Essex is a legend.

Loved comment quite an experience hope that life has been good for you take care!
what a fabulous memory. did you ever do any other theatre work...did others from your school group go on to join the theatre ?
Very interesting! 👏🏻
On the back of the three day week, guaranteed 😂
£6 pounds back then would have been a lot
My mum had this version on vinyl everyone I hear it I think of my mum died aged 55 in 1993 RIP mum you're always in my thoughts and 💓 heart
Condolences.
So did my mum. I can picture the record now, the record had a blue center label, played it hundreds of times!
@@robbflynn4325why not repurchase Same record and get a budget vinyl setup going? I do and helps me remember certain people already.
I've got his single
God bless❤❤
absolutely love David..why can't other people see the talent xxx
Che
I can!! & he's not too shabby either
Exactly
Class!

The Latin is the best bit

David Essex version of Evita was brilliant
Back in the day I always regarded David Essex as bit of a lightweight but his delivery of this song is top draw...it's a theatrical performance and works so well!
David Essex played this role brilliantly 👏
I love this song!! It brings back some beautiful memories!!!! I'm so glad I can still listern to it. Love you David Essex ❤️
Great voice, and a nice guy.
I'm so moved by this version. My heart absolutely SWELLS!
Another fantastic arrangement by the unsung musical legend, Mike Batt. This song still has the ability to make my hairs stand on end, even after years of listening to it. Mike has a knack of doing that, time and time again with his orchestration.
This guy has it all good looks, talent, fabulous voice and beautiful eyes
Thanks, Chaz. Love this play and this is a great version!!
Chaz McCord . Oh yes those eyes, I went to see him for 10 consecutive years at Portsmouth guildhall and those eyes were amazing even from a distance. His voice was as good live as on record.amazing singer.
He does look like Peter Sutcliffe here.
Sadly heared he lost one eye !
@@sherwindavid8147 rubbish
A powerful performance. Argentina is still letting it's people down.
It will do until it turns to Jesus Christ and his Grace and not the papacys roman catholic carnival !!!
From what I heard, Jesus doesn't like it when you slander His bride.
David Essex at his most gorgous. My heart is all a flutter!!!!!
Me too and I'm Straight!!!!
Yes Matt, he is great, and I believe I'm straight too ....
Calm down missus.
How then do you think i feel being gay?
Love David Essex. My favourite is A Winter's Tale, this a close second. Obviously two very different songs. He excelled at both.
such a powerful performance from the legend David Essex.
It is my darling mummy Gina's 70th birthday today which is what brings me here today. She was in love in David Essex. It is amazing what you will do for the one you love so much. I was only a baby during his music reign so i am not terribly familiar with his work sadly.

Rock on was very popular here in US
He had a number one record in the USA
The best version of this song by far.
ringo starr did it origiinally on stage. can't ind any recording but was amazing
Good arrangement. Love the bass line.
And the truth
hugh stone David Essex was first cast Che on stage, concept album (2 years before) was Colm Wilkinson
Yeah I just listened to Antonio Banderas sing it and he can't pronounce 'cwazy' right.
the best version period
I wish I had ever looked as good as David Essex ! I'm only 53, but he is such a great singer, actor & performer !
Let's not forget David's performance in the original War of the Worlds album. Ground breaking musical entertainment.
Indeed, much better than the "New Generation" version from about 11 years ago.
Takes me back, back, back, to 1978. I remember it so well. Thanks for posting.
Agreed! David Essex has that star quality: the ability to get 'inside' a song and make the words really talk. There are few other singers/actors who can match him. This remains the definitive interpretation of the song.
David Essex was my favorite singing back in the day such talent & even more good looking❤
David Essex, nobody will ever be able to better this song after you, I love you and the song! I studied her whole existence in detail, I don't care what they say about her, she was a genius!
Oh what a man ,a real man, he still as lovely today as back then
Top class song, and excellently performed by David Essex.
Absolutely beautiful ..touch of tears too...Brilliance David Essex ⚘⚘⚘

Excuse me,George Michael an actor? er....what tv series or stage musical did George exel in? enlighten us please.....
The original is always the best. Love it ❤️
Hits the spot all the time..timeless classic
One of the best videos I've see. No extravagant production, just well thought out. Also a talented performer.
Phenomenal Goddie
Bravo!!!

ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!!!!!
This was filmed in Clifton Cathedral, Bristol. Thanks for posting!

You have the best memory of this song Sir 🤣❤

Some class in this tune from Mr Essex 👏👏👏
Thanks so much for uploading this - the 1st time I heard this was from the Evita album when I did Music GCSE in the mid 80s xx
He was one of my mum’s favourite singers at the time. I think he was a brilliant singer.
Great song by David Essex he has a voice you can sit back relax and listen to all day
Essex portrays the passion of the song. Its quite a bitter song
yeah,i was just thinking how contemptible the protagonist clearly found Peron.
D.E gets the sarcasm spot on i reckon
@ kate davenporty -
Yes, Che had her number all right. ; )
Then again, don't think he'd have had much time for Andrew Lloyd Webber either. xD
"She did NOTHING for years" has a bite
I've heard that this song was added as something of an afterthought, on the insistence of the producers: Andrew Lloyd-webber originally intended his musical to be much more pro-Peron.
He was the 1st che and the best . A bloody shame he isn't remembered for the none charty stuff . Still acting and touring today . 2024 tour coming up .
i had forgotten how good this was
My late mum fancied David but she wouldn't admit it.
He was a good looking man.. Why would it be wrong for a woman to find him attractive?
***** Because she was an old woman then and he was only about 25.
Chester Fields story of every middle aged woman's life. Now they're called cougars
my sister fancied him when she was about 12 (1975) had posters of him on the wall - other end of the spectrum ;-)
My sister did and admitted it.
This is really, really good.
god i bought this in 1978- fuckin brilliant song- long live d essex! great bloke!
Beautiful song ❤❤
One of my favorite song ❤️❤️
je constate que David Essex déchaîne les passions, positives et négatives. j'attends depuis 30 ans que justice soit faite à ce chanteur unique, séduisant, créatif, au style si particulier. Viva David !
I love the lyrics and the feel of the song. They wouldn’t be able to write songs like this now
David Essex was always a great actor. Even in his early pop songs he performed brilliantly to the camera. His voice is not very strong but he makes up for it by his presence.
The best production he ever gave.
Great vocal he did here.
One of my all time faves. Love it!
Brilliant, love this aswell,
Muito fixe, simplesmente maravilhoso...🤗
Wonderful
How Did I Ever Forget That ‘Moustache’ And David’s Performance ... 🤭😍
A great song and thanks for posting. I once pulled up next to David Essex at some traffic lights in London.
Wow I love this song heard it years ago. Loved him in war of the worlds singing thunder child just brilliant. 😊❤Love to David just brilliant 🤪😀🎂
I never thought him to be a good singer although hemade a good job of this .Boy what a looker & still is.
Seen the musical twice love this song
I Love this. ❤️
😘
Great video. I've only heard Essex sing this, never have the opportunity to see it. Many thanks for posting.
David has never been given full credit for his talents, not well promoted on radio one, or other stations! I wrote into radio once Steve Wright several days later turned on radio to hear Steve Wright say David was star of the week (following week) hope your happy Gail! Yes l was!
Brilliant in his day and still is this 6ft 4 old man loves his music as i did then
Excellent song, the video was on BBC 4 Top of the Pops last week.
Brilliant!

Why do I keep repeating this song 😢
because it's the truth.......
I do because it's a great song and because David Essex is absolutely flipping gorgeous.
Join the club. It's in the repeat section of my Spotify playlist. If it was a record, I would've worn out the grooves.
The show launched at the Prince Edward Theatre in the summer of 1978 and was of the hottest tickets in town. The other was the Two Ronnies Show at the Palladium where I was one of the stage management team. Oh back in the day....
I have listened to this about 20 times in a row by now
It's the Mike Batt (of Wombles fame!) arrangement that really makes it a classic
I loved David Essex in the 70s and I love him in 2019.♡♡♡♡♡♡♡
i do agree with you
Love it......
One of the very best
I first saw David Essex playing in Godspell back in the early 1970s in London first at the Round house then in Leicester Square. He was excellent.
Bet thats a great memory.seen godspell several times but not with Mr Essex and co
Saw this in London when he was in it, brilliant.
superb performance
Saw david Essex perform this on his last night of Evita in London......fantastic. Thanks for posting
I LOVE the photography on this video
As a youngster I longed to be David Essex. A good looking cheeky chap who the ladies loved. And a decent singer too. There's no justice.
Cheer up, he was about three foot tall so there is some justice :)
INHO the best version of this song. It is indeed the original version - I remember I bought it back then - the year was 1976 or 1978 - back then...
Clifton Cathedral Bristol in case any wondering about location
cheers.
Not Buenos Aires? lol
Thank you. I thought it was the Roman Catholic cathedral in Liverpool.
Truely fantastic song.,and performer
Love the saxophone honking away in the chorus
