- The 1974 Appalachia Lake National in Bruceton Mills, West Virginia, had it all-drama, excitement, confusion, even sabotage-as well as a small but pivotal place in motocross lore. This video is an accompanying piece to our "May 5, 1974" feature in the July 2014 issue of Racer X Illustrated.

Fantastic rare ‘74 ama national mx competition. Thanks so much for sharing your content of an exciting era in American moto cross who’s time has come and gone..
Mike Hartwig (#79 Yamaha) sure knew how to show off that new Yamaha Monocross rear suspension at min 7:51. That is also the proper size for a exhaust silencer. Today's mufflers belong on a 4.0 liter V6 car engine. :)
Thanks for posting this era of greatness and greatness rising.
So the 74 YZ had a dual shock rear suspension and not until the 75 year model did they go with the new mono-shock, plus the switch to yellow. These 74s were running mono-shock, is that because it was the factory team?
@@enzochiapet I seen my first one at an Illinois farm in autumn of 1974.
@@joecarlino7870 then you saw a 1975 model, as 1974 launch has dual rear shocks (only year). Assume like in today's world, whether a motorcycle or car, the model years are on the dealer floor in the backhalf of the preceding year.
I remember that day. It was my first national view. I was 16 and rode an sl 100 through the woods and on ash dumps (hard pack) for the experience. I saw Gaylon Mosier ,Tony Wynn and Karsmakers. Oh and an up and coming Marty Tripes.
Real motocross good stuff thanks
nothing better then classic rock and classic 2 stroke motorcross brapppp brapppppp

Yeah, I seem to remember a brown maverick. Do you remember the wheelie contest ? I know it was May 4th.
Terrible editing, same shots over and over
