The results for caged raised released bobwhite quail is dismal. However, I can tell you from personal experience, I have had success raising quail with a surrogate bantam Silver Duckwing. The surrogate game hen is not much bigger than an adult quail. She hatched nine baby quail and all of them have made it to adulthood (8weeks). They return at night to the protection of the pen but forage during the day. I worry more about my hen more than the quail who fly well. Mommy hen taught them from day one how to forage and roam the woods and shrubs. There are feeders and waterers set up on my property and the birds all know where they are at. The quail have perches in the walkin pen and are not stressed to be penned up at night. I'm sure soon they will perch in trees and not go in but a hand full of meal worms every evening is very enticing. So they still come when I whistle.
@@tommyhunter1817 Mine always perched in the Cedar trees along the fence line. Always. They would jump on to a bottom branch and make their way to just below the top. Maybe it's something the chicken taught them.
Some stayed around for a bit! Unfortunately, a few months after the project the client chose to start clearing the native scrub habitats through the middle of the property which has pushed them on and/or exposed to predatory attacks
We are told by staff on site daily that quail area seen frequently, but not in mass form or by quantity we released. We knew there would be natural mortality, but reintegration with a well thought discussed plan for success. This was not a knee jerk plan and go spend funds!
Correct. There is plenty of native low cover left all throughout the development, but most specifically throughout the golf course. All through the property as you can imagine here in SWFL, there is plenty of fresh water.
Only fed during the 1st 2 months….slowly weaned them off so they could learn their land and forage other than locations of release and feedings. As recommended by the hatchery.
@@nativebirdboxesinc.6354 Throw some regular bird seed out to supplement their diet. If they don't eat it, other birds will or it will simple germinate. But it won't spoil like commercial feed. I can see not wanting to provide the birds with commercial feed but the bird seed is ok.
All our native quail have been killed by disease from chicken house and turkey house farming. We're even losing all our song birds to it also. One day we will wake up and we won't have any.
i would think it would just be bad water from the plants. couldn't imagine the birds in the factories would negatively effect wild populations except with point source pollution. Let me know if I'm missing something.
@@Nic-kt6of here tyson and ok foods and continental grain give live virus to the flocks, those virus kill wild birds. Airsac is another disease common in flocks houses that devastate song birds. In the house it sounds like the birds are spitting. All company's say they use no antibiotics on their chickens. Hmmm why do all bird farms have medicator houses? I was brought up in a family that raised chickens (broilers) commercialy since I was 6yo. Wonder how chickens grow so fast? Arsenic fed in small quantities accelerates growth. Yes arsenic5. There's alot they don't tell you.
I lived in south Florida for a few yrs. Quail do really well in this state. They were everywhere in my neighborhood the 3 yrs I lived there.

You need a good source close. And some low cover. And some water close by. Then they will survive

Tough pill to swallow! Will be sad with the loss. More awareness and hopeful good practices hoping some species rebound strong like waterfowl!
