- Riding on the tremendous success of their breakthrough album, The Grand Experiment, The Neal Morse Band set out on a tremendously successful world tour in the spring of 2015. Neal Morse and Mike Portnoy have teamed up with Randy George, Eric Gillette, and Bill Hubauer to create one of the greatest progressive rock bands of all time. Full stop. The Alive Again package shows them at the top of their form performing for a rousing audience in Holland March 6, 2015.
I miss Portnoy in DT but seeing this, I have no doubt he did the right choice. What a fabulous band! It's vintage and modern at the same time, with beautiful melodies, impressive progessive parts, some funny jam, great voices harmony, they play with passion and joy... I love everything in this video!
He ventured out plenty while in DT, but each one had to come to an end when the time came to go back to work with DT. Now that he is free to commit full time to all these other groups, every one of them, especially Neal Morse Band, is masterpiece after masterpiece.

I think Portnoy was always, even before he left DT, a man of the music, not of a band or a few specific music acts. The dude has or is part of projects ranging from classic and pop rock to progressive and fusion acts, he's just a genius that can't stay doing the same sound forever.

Much as I love DT, I also regret to say that their music interests me less and less, especially after The Astonishing, which I found pretty boring, to be honest. As for their latest live recording in London, I've only listened to it once, literally, and I have no intention of going back to it for a loooong time: sorry but it tells me nothing. I don't know exactly how things have changed in that band composition-wise, because there is no question about their musicianship, but now their music sounds to me kind of mechanical and cold.
By comparison, if I listen to John Petrucci's latest release, or the same with Liquid Tension Experiment 3, everything sounds as refreshing and engaging as ever. And the common factor in all these cases is Mr Mike Portnoy, of course.
Though I had already listened to some Transatlantic stuff, just great, naturally, I had not paid attention to the Neal Morse Band, which means that I have been missing some really wonderful stuff and that I will have to put a remedy to that real quick.
Definitely in my top list of prog rock, prog metal or whatever we want to call it.
The greatest live performance ive ever heard and seen. About Mike Portnoy or Neil Morse i will not speak, but what Eric Gillette is playing on guitar and vocals and keys and drums is awesome 🎸👍😁🤣
After throwing down a performance for the ages, Neal turns the applause back to the audience.

This is one crazy band! Every single member is a multi-instrumentalist! That middle jamming part where they all exchange instruments is phenomenal! They could easily play any instrument in any band!
And I didn't even comment what a great epic song is Alive Again...
Eric Gillette has two solo albums out here he plays all the instruments. Awesome stuff. He should get a lot of notice in the guitar community very soon.
He played all the instruments in the first one "Afterthought", in the second one "The Great Unknown" he focused just on guitars
I saw them play this live on the sail away on Cruise To The Edge. They blew everyone away.

Joe Palcsak they're both amazing singers. Bill's solo towards the end is just perfect. Not to mention how great they are at their respective instruments!

That section after the crazy instrumental break, where Bill sings and Neal plays acoustic, brings me to tears every single time.

100% agree. anyone who likes rock music would fucking wet their pants listening to this. such a shame prog is so niche. these muisicans are absoutely the best in the world.
Amazing! I love how most of the audience is living in the moment and enjoying this band in all its glory and NOT holding their phones high in the air. That's how concerts should be!
This is amazing on so many levels...melody,song writing, musicianship,groove,instrumentation,arrangement,vocal harmonies,individual instrument virtuosity, feel etc etc It's totally awesome!!!
The ending to this sends shivers up my spine like no other song or band ever has. What an incredible build (like you said, on so many levels), crescendo and musicianship. Wow!
The chemistry between these musicians is incredible! The perfect blend of talent, personality, and abilities make this the PERFECT band, my favorite band. I'm addicted!

even with your eyes closed and just listening you can hear Mike's drum style. Just happy to see him in this fabulous band. And that said from a big DT fan...

Whole song is absolutely a masterpiece, but when Bill’s vocals kick in after the instrumental section, I’m always on the verge of tears. Absolutely beautiful beyond comparison

I used to be a dream theater fan until I saw the Neal Morse Band at the House of Bluse in Chicago. I traveled fro San Jose to see it! it was magical. I sat second row and forgot to turn on my android camera. I really wish I had a dvd of that show. I bought the 2 cd/dvd combo and was floored. Freaking awesome is all I can say.

the grand Experiment is the first album of Neal Morse i recently discovered and this is so huge, it just blows me away! What a present ! Beside the new KANSAS album "prelude implicit" my current favourite!
