  • In a three-part In Focus podcast special we retell the story of Michelle Smith 25 years on from her unprecedented medal haul at the Atlanta Olympics.
The ambitious Dublin swimmer captivated a nation during the summer of 1996 by winning three gold medals and a bronze across an astonishing week in Atlanta, becoming the first Irish woman in history to reach the top step of an Olympic podium.
Four years earlier at the Barcelona Olympics she had been on the verge of quitting her sport, but by 1996 she was on top of the world.
However, while the nation celebrated her sporting success some were already questioning her achievements.
We talk to those who were there to cover the story and those who lost out on gold medals to Michelle, to retrace the glory, controversy, divisions, and personal toll caused by that week in Atlanta.
Featuring Paul Kimmage, Vincent Hogan, Paul Howard, Eamon Dunphy and silver medallists Allison Wagner and Marianne Limpert.

She was caught with Androstenedione numerous times, was banned for tampering, as it was easier for FINA to pursue

It is so obvious now looking back on it. It was inspiring...then hugely disappointing. If she had just admitted her wrong doings & gave up her medals, she might still have a somewhat "normal" life

Why should she give up her medals. For doping? Nearly everyone at the top level in sports dopes, anyone who doesn't have their head in the sand knows this. You think Michael Phelps, Kristi Otto, Ian Thorpe, Leon Marchand aren't all doped to the eyeballs, LOL!

@@philipmcveigh2025 she wasn't found guilty of doping at the Atlanta Olympics. We all knew she was, lol, and most of us were pretty sure she was even before she got caught doping in January 98, but fact is she was never caught doping there. So there is no reason to give up her medals when we all know the Olympics and top level sports are nothing but a giant dopefest anyway.

I'm beginning to this either you are her or you have serious issues. You post the same nonesense on every video about her.
You've convinced no one. Everyone knows she's a cheat. Innocent people don't go into hiding like she did.
