    Such a fantastic episode..
Speechless.. Ultra series was really such a different quality back in the Showa era. Im truly amazed of how 'quirky' this episode is..
So far, im loving this series by how the concept of alternate dimension stuff being executed pretty well..

Finally watched this in full! Episode 23 is one of the creepiest and most surreal episodes in the series! An old man with a cane, chanting children, and snow in summer... With Giant Yapool and an intense portrayal by Hokuto, this is a very memorable episode from Ace!
Is this the last time we see the Yapool-men in this form? They might heinous and cruel, but they are also industrious and creative, who never give up creating new chouju every week to fight Ace. 🤣🤣This episode, they even prepared multi-language versions of their chant!
There is an unexplained sense of dread throughout this episode, and the pressure never lets up from start to end. The ominous chanting and trance-like children create a sense of overwhelming danger.
Yapool frequently uses children as hostages or weapons against Earth. Just like in the last episode, Yapool attracts children of their own free will through toys, chants, and other tricks. It's scary how an alien being like Yapool can so easily manipulate humans, using their desires and bias against them. In that, they truly embody the devil.
Like the devil, Yapool's visage changes from different perspectives. Unknowing humans see a normal person. When its true nature is revealed, we see Yapool in otherworldly make-up and, finally, as a literal beast. (The Devil is also compared to beasts in literature.)
I really like how camera and narration do not call attention to the man turning into his Yapool make-up. I missed this when I watched the episode the first time. There is something very unnerving thinking the Devil could be in plain sight in front of you, without you knowing.
    "Is the ocean blue?
    Are the mountains green?
    Are the flowers blossoming?"
This scene paints a bleak, barren future of death for the Earth; the future that Yapool would bring to Earthlings.
The children answering in unison gives it such despair. This whole sequence is amazing.
As usual, TAC doesn't believe Hokuto. But this time, the episode does a good job showing why. It's not just that Hokuto's claims are outrageous, but his expression was borderline manic. The scene of Hokuto's desperation in TAC HQ was so gripping. The heaviness is also in TAC's reaction. While they harshly questioned him before, now they are quiet. Yamanaka doesn't even yell at him. Even Captain Ryu didn't believe him, but pretended to calm Hokuto down.
The exchange between Minami and Hokuto is very sweet 💓💓 We learn a bit about her past (I wonder if it happened on the moon?), and Yuko sounds more cheerful and impulsive than usual.
Maybe it's because Hokuto was feeling down? 🥺 She is always supportive of him... 😭
There are also some lovely, scary, and haunting visuals in this episode: The darkness closing in on TAC and the world; Children marching with flowers into the river; Hokuto alone on the beach in despair.
    This episode was really special.

Yapool's strange old man guise really plays into the adult fear of your children wandering off with an unknown stranger .

Wow, the intensity and surrealism really ramped up in this episode! I felt so sorry for Hokuto, who was driven to physical and psychological extremes.
I feel these are the most unique episodes of Ace, this mix of absurdity, surrealism, and tension. And it's usually most pronounced in the Yapool-focused episodes.
I'm gonna need to process this further...

That Yapool fight sure reminded me of quite a few early Mirrorman fights. They went a bit crazy with battles in different dimensions XD

It's interesting that apparently Ace has never actually seen the Yapool before, but everyone knows that the Yapool exist. I'm guessing that the Yapool deploy chojuu and loan them out, but Ace invading their dimension forced them to actually fight instead of swarming him with chojuu and calling it a day.
Amusingly enough, in the same episode the Yapool actually have to reveal themselves, so apparently even invading their dimension isn't a guarantee that they'll show up personally.
Man, I miss the Yapool-men. Giant Yapool just isn't creepy enough; though interestingly the last Ultraman fighting game released had the Yapool being the main villains in their Yapool-men form...and apparently individual Yapool-men are the size of a standard Ultra.

@@LordMortanius That's interesting that the Yapool-men are the same size as an Ultra! I always had this impression they were tiny creatures, not sure why lol.
Another thing I miss about old Yapool is its ability to warp its home dimension to its advantage. I like how Yapool uses it to confuse and disorientate Ace here.
Speaking of Yapool's dimension, I also wondered why Hokuto had to endure that trial when Zoffy's could just uber Minami over, so I'm guessing that Yapool has the ability to hide in many different dimensions, so Zoffy waited for Hokuto to find Yapool, then used his and Minami's connection to bring Minami over and enable Ace to transform.

@@EvilDoresh That would be awesome! Yapool strikes me like a Mephilas-type villain, who can marshall others together into factions. They kinda served that role in the Mebius & Ultra Brothers movie.

The direction and the camera angles were very... different in this episode. Even at the scenes in the real world. Things get more psychodelic at the other dimension.
Well, TAC not believing Hokuto is already a running joke. Even though it gives the impression Yapool and the Terrible Monsters are something unusual, something that doesn't appear very often. And considering at least three years passed since the first episode, their appearances are really few and far between.

That's a very good point about the frequency of Yapool's appearances. Realistically I wouldn't be surprised if TAC received a lot of hoax reports, hence their skepticism. But the series never makes it clear.

    Continuing on!
It's cruel that something as beautiful as a starry sky is caused by disappearing kids.I feel like this is the joke of Yapool - "only humans think children are innocent". Yapool loves turning our expectations against us.
Interestingly, the children are taken to the alternate dimension through bodies of water. Water, rivers, and oceans are associated as gateways to other worlds, and the afterlife.
It's time to take the battle to Yapool directly!
I wondered why Hokuto had to endure the trial if Zoffy could bring Minami there? 🤔 My theory is that Hokuto needed to find where Yapool was hiding among many alternate dimensions first. Then Zoffy traced Hokuto through their Ace Rings.
Finally, the two long-time opponents meet! Over 20 episodes of fighting led to this!🔥 It was very polite of Ace to confirm his opponent's identity before beating it to a pulp, and of Yapool to answer him too ☺
Ace claims he'll show no mercy, and Yapool yells, "Bring it on!"
The dramatic zoom in feels like a boss battle!!! 🔥
Yapool can match Ace beam for beam, and also has shields and its ever-trusted fire attacks to use against Ace. Ace is fighting Giant Yapool on its home ground, meaning Yapool can manipulate the dimension to its advantage. I like how Yapool uses it to confuse and disorientate Ace. (It's a shame that we don't see this side of Yapool more often now.)
After getting beaten and mind-warped enough, Ace figures out how to fight in Yapool's dimension! (How? Let's call it Ace's natural fighting instinct!✨) There is a cool exchange of beam attacks! It feels like a Wild West showdown!
The battle slows at the end, as Ace and Yapool watch and size each other up, looking for an opening... It's really cool how the music even dramatically stops for it.
In the end, Ace counters and wins with the Metallium Beam!
As it dies, Yapool makes its memorable declaration...
"Though Yapool may die, Chouju live on!!!"
The ending is a surreal and magical scene of children floating back to Earth, like falling stars. Yapool's grudge scatters like sparkling stars. (Isn't this similar to Devil Splinters?) It's a victorious image that hides Yapool's revenge.
I love the intense and heroic close-ups of Hokuto and Minami!

Once again, TAC doesn't believe a story that turned out to be true. There should be a counter for those.
Also, hilarious Zoffy's name is in the title but his appearance lasts for, what, 1 minute?
Even funnier was Yuko suddenly screaming, jumping and disappearing. Given how stubborn TAC is, I wouldn't be surprised if they write that off too

      Mikawa: Yuko screamed and disappeared!
Yamanaka: Impossible! That doesn't make any sense.
Mikawa: But it just happened! Right here!!
Kaji: Scientifically, it's not possible for a human to just disappear....
MIkawa: I saw it with my own eyes!!!
