  • How to fix a carabiner with a broken gate
    In this video, I show how a simple lightweight carabiner works and how the spring in the gate of a carabiner can easily be repaired with a simple standard screwdriver. As shown in the video, the spring in this type of carabiner can sometimes slip out of the spot that holds it. People often think the carabiner is broke when this happens because the gate does not snap back closed like it normally should; however, most of the time the metal spring piece has just come off the spot that holds it. Next time your simple lightweight carabiner has lost its spring, check this solution and it will likely be your fix. This works for many simple lightweight basic carabiner designs (not typically a climbing carabiner which as a bit more sophistication and capacity to it than this simple design).

    Thanks! I fixed my carabiner using your tutorial. Mine seemed to have some play in the rivet, so I used a pair of linesman’s pliers as an anvil and tapped the rivet a bit and it tightened up nicely. Tip: Don’t tap too hard. Go easy and check often. BTW - it looked like your carabiner body is maybe stretched out a bit. You can use a vice or hammer to close it up a little lengthwise so that the gate engages more metal.

    Pretty close to what I suspected, thanks! One concern though - if the spring was able to slip out before, and the metal of the carabiner is getting worn, isn't it likely to pop/slip out again?

    • @ActinOut
      @ActinOut  4 года назад +4

      Yes, I'm sure the more the ledge that holds the spring in gets worn over time, or the spring gets too damaged, the more likely it is to slip out. However, depending on how intensive the carabiner is used, I would think that ledge should last for some time. It should last for a long time though (years) because the outside part of the ledge is protected from wear by the gate and gate hinge parts. Both the bottom of the gate and the gate hinge area would need to be worn down for the ledge to get wear from the outside too. If the ledge gets too worn from the inside because the spring keeps popping out and repeated repairs, the gate can be opened and, if there's still plenty of carabiner material remaining, a Dremel tool or fine file could be used to grind out another ledge. However, in that case, one would likely need to make another (longer) gate spring. This video shows how to make another spring: (ruclips.net/video/DAoW2jHcr8Y/видео.html)
      Personally, I'd probably just get another carabiner, but I know some DIY or MacGyver type people or people in a pinch situation could be benefited by knowing how to do this. Carabiner problems like this can be a common occurrence in the backcountry where one cannot simply buy another.
      Good question! Thanks for watching and the comment!
