I remember being in 4th grade, standing in front of the TV while my mom pinned the hem of the as yet unfinished skirt I was wearing, The Merv Griffin Show was on with Blossom Dearie performing. Both my parents were classically trained singers & we usually had opera or other classical music on. Mom mentioned Blossom's breathy, simple technique with some disdain, but even at age 9, I was hooked for life!
There's something so chic, light, easygoing and disaffected about her playing and singing, a cool relaxed shrug with a smile in musical form. Like, "well, what are ya gonna do? Let's get a coffee."
What a wonderful rendition of Soon It's Gonna Rain. I saw her at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco in the early 80s. She was absolutely fantastic.
I'm so glad I found these vidios of Blossom. I became a fan during the summer of Covid after discovering her on Spotify while sheltering in place. I quickly downloaded 4 Verve albums from Apple, all of which I'm keeping. My absolute favorite is: Blossom Dearie Sings Comden And Greene. I play these a lot.
Blossom Dearie is absolutely one of the best jazz artists of the 20th century. Superb!
Why did I hear of her only a week go? She's criminally underrated, her piano playing alone already.

Her version of Soon It's Gonna Rain is the best ever performed that I've heard either live or on recording. Sublime!!!!

Thank you for that childhood memory.
To be able to watch Blossom as well as listen is such a gift. Her distinct style has always drawn me into the lyrics being sung
Soon It's Gonna Rain was lovely.
I love the high vocal trills at the end of "My Gentleman Friend." I don't think I've ever heard her do that before...
Absolutely beautiful! Blossom Dearie was always great and this era might be the time when she did some of her best work ever. Thanks for uploading!
