The term "one of a kind" is frequently applied incorrectly, but not in the case of Blossom Dearie. "Uniquely talented" doesn't do her justice. "Amazing" comes closer. Just loved her work.
Her cover of "Lush Life" has got to be about the best.
I caught Blossom Dearie one evening performing in Santa Monica Ca in an Intimate Jazz Club & 'What a Treat !!
Just discovered her- such a “ hep” powerhouse!
Yes she has been going since 1965 I’ve got her singing Am in Love Again her vice is unique that’s why I love Angelina Jourdon 🎉🎉🎉🎉😮😮😊
26 year old here. Love me some Blossom Dearie. What a class act.
26 year old here. Me too!
@@dandelle shes amazing
If Doris Day and Bill Evans had a baby..... She's amazing and understated.
Bill loved her stuff, for the record.
Je l’adore !
Love the simplicity and momentum of her 2 bar intro. She looks so youthful, amazing to find out she was 41 when this performance was filmed.
Really? I was thinking early 30’s!
@@Joeyrobertparks Blossom was born in April 1924 so in 1965 she would have been 41. She passed away in Feburary 2009 at age 84.
What!!! Wow. She looks 20.
40 is old? Ha!
Not just that, but her playing, and that VOICE. It's the opposite of Peggy Lee and Julie London.
I'll say it again, "how did I miss her?" Been listening to jazz for almost 50 years. Glad she popped up on my feed.
I’m now drenched in her awesomeness!! Omg! Just discovered!
She was in her early 40s here, she had the girlishness while at the same time all of the mature confidence. One of my all time favorites.
聴くと胸が苦しくなる。郷愁が込み上げてくるのは何故だろうか、この曲に出逢えてよかったです。
God bestowed talent...timeless classic.
A belated happy 100th (4/28/1924) to the amazing and totally hip-to-the-tip, Miss Blossom Dearie.❤🎹🎶
Jeez she was so incredibly talented.
We need this especially now. This soothes the soul. This was nice.
quite :)
I was visiting New York at 18yo from Arizona and happened upon Blossom at Bob Soir and fell madly for her. She always made me happy-sad all at once. Touchingly so. You are missed greatly by many of us here in NYC. What a gift you are still! 🎉 😢 Happy and Sad all at once!
Blossom Dearie Is Truly One of The Greatest Singers In American Music History!
They Don't Create Music Like This Anymore!
They're Have To Be a Hollywood Bio Pic About Miss Dearie.
Isn t she British?
@@sallybowles2781 nope, NYC all the way
@@ruscello490 She played in London frequently and like so many of her generation of jazz artists she was better known in the UK and Europe than at home. Elton John named his piano after her.
omg - could anyone swing quite like that?! The first time I heard her I thought "god does she ever have a smoking pianist behind her". Then I realized SHE was the smoking pianist!!!! Talk abou underrated! She's amAAAHHHHZing!
She was indeed fabulous!
She said she's a jazz musician, learning to be a jazz singer.
Seems she nailed both. Very underrated as a pianist.
I like her New York accent. The voice is, perhaps, something to get used to. Her prowess on the 88s is fantastic.
The quality of the audio recording is great
Fabulous Blossom xx
WOW. all the right notes, at the right time. What planet did she get beamed from?
Wow...first time I have seen her perform...although she is a name i know well
She's great
Blossom Dearie was a brilliant pianist. And a good friend of Miles Davis.
Her style is so precise.
She was a national treasure
An abiding regret of my life is that I never got to see/hear Blossom Dearie in person. The lady never played or sang a bad note in the entirety of her career.
Favorite singer of all time. Lately I want to burn the internet to the ground but then I remember it makes watching videos like this so possible and so easy.
Maybe refrain from burning up this little part 😉❤️
@@aeropilot4419Definitely the sweet side of RUclips.
One of my favorite singer woman in muy life
It's a pleasure to hear such a natural voice. I just discovered an album of hers that I bought years ago. Fresh as a daisy. Or should I say fresh as a blossom.
Where on Earth have I been that I haven't discovered this Amazing Lady until now? I knew of her name from the ABC Saturday Morning School House Rock segment she did, "Figure Eight." I also believe she did a commercial for Canada Dry's Wink soda. I think I've just fallen in love with her. What a fantastic Jazz performer AND she plays piano too, which I didn't know.
This is what is so great about RUclips- so many fans posting their music favorites and people like me get to "discover" a new favorite! Thanks so much for this!
+tomovox I wish you all that is in this song!
I agree, she has a beautiful voice. It's a shame nobody like her is around today. I wish I was alive in her time to listen to all of her music. It's amazing.
tomovox Don't fret. All that matters is you got to discover her before you were stardust. This is the greatest gift of RUclips. Turning the wanderers on to the real thing, like Blossom Dearie or Sarah Vaughan. Just a couple years ago I discovered Chet Baker, and I've not been the same since.
+AUSLÄNDER RAUS Search youtube for, "Kate Davis Gets Big Break at American Voices Concert".
It's never too late!
If you payed attention to the IF Movie. This is an album they flip through right before the Grandma dances with Blossom
Dearie was, to me at least, the quintessential lounge/cabaret act. Kind of like in he mold of Bobby Short. She was a talented musician by all means and she had that totally distinctive, thin, "little girl" timbre to her voice. I have a couple of her albums and every now and then I play some of her stuff. Her backup men are also solid players, too.
Absolute charm
(Otherwise let's not forget that the original song is "Que reste t'il de nos amours" by Cherle Trenet
I am a big fan of the mid century jazz beatniks, like Blossom Dearie!
Surprisingly she sang so well as if it was a recording
One of the greats. ...And a predecessor to Diana Krall. Sweet as a summer wind blowin' through a cherry orchard.
A talented jazz singer AND pianist from the 50's? Welp, time to look up her entire catalog.
Very light and girlish indeed. Easily one of the best jazz singers of all time in my book.
Found this from hitting random on wikipedia. This is excellent
There was probably someone who told her early on that she didn’t sound like the others, so if that ever happens to you, see your differences as an asset, not a reason to stop. I love her sound.
Well Miles Davis alternated sets with her and referred to her as "the only white woman with soul." Does that qualify?
She melts my heart.
What a beautiful song! I feel so lucky that we got to hear Blossom Dearie in NY in 2001 and still think fondly about that night.
The entire audience was mesmerized, completely under her spell.
I even got to chat with her and thank her after the show. She was a wonderful person and a very talented artist. As a pianist I really appreciate that she chooses each note carefully instead of playing a ton of notes like some jazz players do. She’s a purist and her style is minimalist, but each bite is a real treat and leaves us wanting more.
How lucky … I discovered her much too late 😢
She’s so magical 😭
She's such a huge influence to lofi genre
I love her.
My daughter was singing the "Unpack your adjectives" episode of Schoolhouse Rock because she heard it in school. As a child of the 70s/80s (yes, I'm an older parent) I knew it well and streamed it for her... as soon as I heard the voice i knew it was Blossom Dearie, lol. Back then I had no idea who she was but as an adult I'm a big fan. It's cool how I seem to enjoy the things I liked as a kid even MORE now that I'm an adult. 🤷♂️
wow! I had no idea!!!!
Happy 100th birthday.
I’ve loved Blossom Dearie since the local jazz station played her rendition of “Peel Me a Grape” many years ago. She was one of a kind and I will never tire of listening to her.
Goddamn it! She was so good.
Sweet singing like a finch singing. Viva!!! Bravo!!! Pretty Good!!!!
Blossom you were so special! Rest easy❤
Sensational. BD was so gifted.
Ahhh,to be alive(as an adult) during that time. I'd have given up watching Captain Kangaroo,in a heart beat,to have seen this magnificent talent in the clubs of France, and NYC.
I was! It was GREAT!!!! Yes Sireeee ( unfortunately, now its very BAD! )
I was reading a Spencer novel & he mentioned Blossom, I had never heard of her! So now I’m checking her out and she’s quite adorable & talented!
Watching these old tv jazz videos makes me so happy, I just smile : )
Blossom accarezza il piano e lui suona! Meraviglioso da ascoltare!
Prestigieux. J'adore
Wow! What a nice surprise
OMG we have the same nose, and sound similar singing! I was too shy to sing, until people said I sounded like Blossom Dearie. That is a BIG complement, because she is a fabulous pianist AND singer!
1965, this takes me back to the day I first saw Blossom and fell in love with the lady and her music. I'm still enjoying her talent in 2018.
She’s got the sweetest voice I’m Jazz in my opinion
Blossom Dearie deserves to be celebrated and worshiped as a true talented musician and woman. Wish I could have met her ❤
I have BFA in music that I acquired over twenty years ago...this is the first day I've learned about this amazing artist!!!
Grandissima Blossom Dearie ❤️🌹☀️✨✨
Franco Manzecchi on drums , Maestro 👏👏👏☀️🌹❤️
Holy shit shes amazing.
What good is it to fall for women of the past lololol
PERFECTION!
Dear Blossom, I feel so privileged to have enjoyed her live in Melbourne along with Stephane Grappelli. What a night never ever forget it
Oh, I wish I could have been there to hear that.....
I hope The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel whose soundtrack seems to feature more Blossom Dearie tunes than anybody else's becomes even more of an ICON if that's possible. Her voice is truly unique- this is the 1st time I've heard her speak- exactly like one expects! Soft, sweet but not saccharine, perfectly "tender"- as a devotee of this "marvelous" TV show, I kept hearing snippets of a charming voice so suited to "certain" moments. As somebody who suffers from an illness, not Covid, no vaccine for my condition, I took/take to books and so I hadn't played her for awhile- Marianne Faithfull's She Walks in Beauty, has been my lady of choice since it's relase BUT as I am on "re-run" 6! for The Marvelous...I "dug" her out, dusted her off as the song goes and started all over again! Rachel/Miriam could sing just like this- close your eyes, when Midge is sad, and you hear BLOSSOM DEARIE! Not, sadly, loud, raunchy, nor "expressive" enough- not a ballsy chick, who can wail over feedback- nope- she's in a class of her own. Wow! Bless the music director of this brilliant show, all the soundtrack is spot on but Blossom, somehow she epitomizes a "seemingly" gentler time- Korea has been fought, hardly anybody is paying attention to a small country, named Vietnam, prosperity seems to have come to most of North America- I'm Canadian ( wish Blossom was a Montreal-er, she'd love that city!) rock and roll is fledgling with the wonderful Louie Prima and people still touch when they dance- merci beaucoup Blossom Dearie...Namaste World, be kind to each other today!
For some reason I'm bumping into these voices from the early 60s like Lola Albright and Linda Lawson from Mancini's Peter Gunn show.
Wow wow... how can be Swing and sweet at that same time ?
Wow! Just heard of Dearie today.
A unique gem of a talent!
The lady is so amazing and swings so beautifully.
This is my first time seeing her! I discovered her music recently on Spotify and it felt like a glass of cool water on a long hot day. She’s so cool!
Me too! I had HEARD OF and heard her before, but hadn't seen a clip of her performing. I was 15 when she recorded this and I was starting to explore jazz. My memory of her was triggered by a French band called 'Les Balayeurs du désert' which sampled her version of 'It Amazes Me' in their track: 'Décollage'. R (Australia)
I was 9 years old when I first saw her. What a dearie!
Best wishes indeed and in truth. Mr. K. Abdul-Jabbar, Thanks for sharing this with your sub stack subscribers 2023.
I’m so late to this amazing talent. I was watching "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and a few of her tracks were on the soundtrack. Thank God for Shazam. Love her style. I’m now a fan.
I was lead trumpet in a band once. But of all the instruments I wished to play, it was the piano most of all. Wow, what a talent she was!
Very nice. Such a refreshingly cute and relaxing vocal style
What a GREAT piano duet! What a talented lady Blossom Dearie is‼️ This is such cool jazz...❤️🎹‼️🌺👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
I have never heard of this woman. Really wonderful.
Mi cantante rubia de jazz preferida.
There's no one like her. The word "unique" actually applies.
"actually"
This is priceless. It nearly brings me to tears how beautiful it is.
Good god, I loved the way this woman sang. Highly under rated outside of vocal jazz circles.
Brilliant and thank you for including the players names.
The Fabulous Mrs. Maisel brought me her. I'm so thankful. Merci beaucoup Midge.
… first her brisket, now Blossom Dearie … what’s not to like 🙂
Wish we could bring you back..........
They're all so talented what a nice piece of video here, and I'm glad to live in a time and place which i can see it online, so many years later
tTheir talent and sheer musicianship just takes your breath away
Blossom's voice is just adorable!
Que reste-t-il de nos amours
Que reste-t-il de ces beaux jours
Une photo, vieille photo
De ma jeunesse
Que reste-t-il des billets doux
Des mois d' avril, des rendez-vous
Un souvenir qui me poursuit
Sans cesse
Bonheur fané, cheveux au vent
Baisers volés, rêves mouvants
Que reste-t-il de tout cela
Dites-le-moi
Un petit village, un vieux clocher
Un paysage si bien caché
Et dans un nuage le cher visage
De mon passé
How come i never head of this woman ???? If it wasn't for feeling like hearing figure 8 she would still be off my radar.
My fav jazz singer ever ❤❤❤
Saw her in nyc when she must have been 80.. Still magic.
wonderful
It does not get any better than Blossom Dearie!!
In 1975 quite by accident I saw Bobby Short at the Carlyle in NYC. Long away from Seattle but enjoyed him for years. I stumbled on Blossom last week and goodness I wish I would have found her then. She is simply wonderful. Her music lives on. Thanks to the person that did this you made my day. Larry
Never heard this lady before and yet was brought in a family full of all sorts of music from 1920's to whenever! Brilliantly talented artiste!
Wonderful video footage of an under-appreciated talent..She really swings on the grand piano and the trio gracefully supports her singing. Thanks
oh dear, that second part on the piano is fantastic entertainment and musicianship !
