For people looking to get started in backpacking, but are more cautious or unsure if they are ready ... until they are ready to commit to all in on an overnight backpack trip, they can start to get some or all of the gear, take it on a hikes, set it up or test out pieces of gear on a few short hikes or day hikes until one day eventually feeling comfortable enough to spend the night.
Maybe then, if you are still not sure, do a couple overnights close or very close to your car (especially for winter camping) that you can grab your gear and go back your car or home at any point if it turns out that you were not prepared yet.

@@stevewitman I totally agree, Steve. I especially love that last bit of advice. My first overnight trip in high school gave me quite a bit of anxiety, and being able to hop back in the car and go home would have been a good option if I'd had that advice back then.

Well deserved! It’ll be 1000 before you know it. You articulated some thoughts in this video that have been weighing on me. My top 5 most popular videos are things I look back on with no sense of pride. And the videos I’ve been so proud of, go largely unseen. It’s frustrating. But I carry on!

And I find great satisfaction in watching the ones that make you proud... which drive me in the right direction. Thanks, Jim.

Congrats! I've learned so much and appreciate how real you are. I especially find the little practical things (like how to go to the bathroom lol) to be super helpful and takes away the fear of the unknown. Looking forward to more! P.S. technically, you did go backpacking with a cat. That's impressive. 🐈😺

Very saddened that Catpacking was a farse, still subbed though. The McKenzie River Trail is great for beginners. I've done some solo as a newbie, and took my wife on a couple over nighters this summer with the help of your videos.

@@gabedavis9886 That's awesome. I appreciate you watching and subscribing. Definitely going to do another trip on the McKenzie River Trail next spring. Great for beginners, as you said. Also for guidance on backpacking with cats with better results than mine, check out the Adventure Cats website. Thanks again!
