  • Airline: Air New Zealand
    Aircraft: deHavilland Dash 8-300
    Rego: ZK-NEF
    Seat: 02A
    Flight: NZ5224
    Origin: Auckland AKL
    Destination: Whangarei WRE
    Flight Time: 0hr30min
    Cruise Altitude: FL110
    Landing: Whangarei WRE Runway 06
A quick flight up from Auckland, with the Weather starting to show signs of an incoming front. Whangarei Airport currently holds the distinction of having the Shortest Runway Air NZ fly too. Surrounded on water on 3 sides means options for expansion/Runway lengthening are severely limited. Plans by the Council have investigated options to relocate the airport to other suitable places in the District, or retain the current sight at Onerahi. Time will tell :)

The stopping power on those Dash 8 is amazing, considering Whangarai has a small runway!! Glad to see Air NZ still flying there!!

They are incredible Aircraft! I know there are those who sit on the ATR side of the fence, or the Dash 8 side. I know what side I am on! :) The Dash 8s are stellar Aircraft to fly, and fly in.
It will be interesting to see what happens in the next few years with Whangarei Airport. Whether it stays where it is, or whether they relocate and build and brand new one. They have a couple of sites worked out, with one particularly ideal one located. If that does happen, I will be most sad to see the Airport at Onerahi go. It's a gorgeous spot!

Where are the proposed new sites for the airport? Can't imagine the Whangarai city council wanted to spend that kind of money on a new airport!!

So at this stage they have two sites identified out at Ruatangata (North East of the CBD). From memory, one of those is more superior than the other. I'm sure I heard on the grapevine that the Council has purchased some land there.
The third option is out at One Tree Point. Seems there are quite a few drawbacks to this location though. Namely how susceptible to flooding the area is, the somewhat high surrounding population which would be affected by noise/operations. And also the proximity of the port/refinery.
The final option tabled was to leave the Airport as is at Onerahi. Unfortunately the Airport is no longer fit for purpose. It currently has the shortest Runway in the country that Air NZ operate to. It is only allowed to continue to operate under special dispensation from the Civil Aviation Authority, as the Airport has numerous non-compliance issues. One being the lack of RESAs on the Runway. With no room to expand the current Airport, it is completely unlikely these compliance issues will be met.
I know the submissions to council on the projects finished back in 2022 or something. I would imagine we would hear something soon surely. :)

    Butter landing, very nice.
WRE always seems as though it just rained 5 mins ago.
